So whose fault was it all those times you got warned and suspended?

This isnt about that at all. Ive never actually had someone modded for trolling. Someone called me an idiot before and I got modded for trolling. This picture is a great example of what Ive said in the past about how trolling actually cant be a thing. Trolling couldnt be successful if other people took responsibility for their own actions.

Thats not what this is about. If I took a mod for calling someone a name that would be my own fault and I would expect them not to take one for anything.

On numerous occasions its been biased/spiteful mods/users who vote a certain way that dont like hearing other opinions/facts that prove them wrong. On at least one occasion it was decided I was replying to the OP when I was replying to the post directly above mine, which I didnt quote because its not a rule that I have to, and the difference was that one was an innocent reply and one got me suspended. Again, people who dont like me because of differing opinions reported me and all got together and decided what I was actually replying to. Not my fault at all.

Basically what I said. I mean there are always threads coming up about this. Im surprised someone who seems so smart would even need to ask. One of the once-regular-users who caused me grief is now higher-up in the chain, for some reason, so its reasons like that.

Which has exactly dickall to do with how other people act. You can be the best you that you can be, but that doesn't stop somebody else from being a troll.

Sarcasthma posted... So whose fault

The state can do no wrong is a pretty scary pro-authoritarian suggestion. People in positions of authority pretty frequently do wrong and the people hurt by wrong actions aren't necessarily in the wrong simply by virtue of being hurt by those in authority, especially when authorities are violating the standards that they were sworn to uphold.

Also no correlation. If a troll harassed you relentlessly and you turned the other cheek despite suffering the way they wanted you to suffer, they're still successful. And if your solution for the situation is to cave, you're still doing what they want.

@Zeus

False. Trolling by definition is inflammatory or off-topic comments said to illicit a response. No response, no (successful) troll. Keep in mind that intent is required. Suffering is a choice in those cases. You can choose to ignore the person entirely and go about your daily life.

I never broke any rules in those cases. I gave an example above. Some topics regularly discuss this also.

Words/Actions - These are ways of adding Choices to the banner a few more times.

Choices - Each person has rather limited influence over this. It goes back to the philosophical discussion of whether people have free will given how many factors are a constraint on the will. If one chooses to do something that is impossible at that time then their choice is disregarded by reality. Further people tend to choose some things over others. Punching one's self in the face is an unpopular choice, even when one realizes that the option is available to them. Likewise they cannot choose for themselves what the outcome of doing so will be.

Grades - Teachers have greater influence over this than any individual student.

Success - This is even more complex due to how many external factors contribute to the outcome. People must make choices based on a predicted outcome. Those predictions can be inaccurate. They don't get to choose among different outcomes for a particular action.

Taking responsibility for their own emotions doesn't mean people have to like listening to somebody deliberately trying to piss them off. Trolling can absolutely be a thing, a thing which causes nobody to like you and to want you to go away.

I'll take the bait.

When a two-year old developed brain damage from lead poisoning, was it:
  1. their fault for exposing their own body to lead, (according to your first post, it is.)
  2. their parents' fault for not being able to get housing without lead or not recognizing the lead in the water/paint, (because apparently people "choose" to expose themselves to poison out of "laziness" or "lack of accountability.")
  3. or the system that red-lined the family into a district that hasn't updated its infrastructure since the 1800s and then kept them in impoverished so they could never accumulate the wealth to renovate or leave?
.
Truth is that it's a gross oversimplification and a worthless platitude. People just want individualistic answers to complex social problems so they can feel morally justified in not giving a fuck about the struggles of others. After all, why should they waste their beautiful minds on something like that?
