hmmm?

If you think you're smart, you're actually stupid, and if you think you're stupid, you're actually pretty smart.

No metric is provided, so I can think I'm smart as a position of egocentrism without actually being incorrect.

Well, either I'm smart or most people are just really stupid. I wasn't an attentive student -- napping in class and rarely studying -- yet I still maintained a 3.9 GPA through high school and college, among other things.

Depends on the definition. There are people who think they're smarter than me that would be very wrong. I'm very intuitive and have been from a young age. I had a few advanced classes in school. Excellent at spelling. On the other hand I sucked at things like foreign language and hated bio or social studies.

I don't like the concept of smart/not-smart honestly. I think it usually actually comes down to patience not something like IQ. I think some people have been told so many times that they're not smart that they've lost all willingness to even try as soon as something seems even the tiniest bit complicated, and it triggers a sort of anxiety in them. if you can get them to actually try, anyone can understand anything if both people have the patience for working through it.

Nah. I'm probably dumb as a rock going by how the customers treat me. Course, I'm also smart enough to know things like that a single low-ranking employee can't change store policy, so I dunno... Eh. I'm still dumb I guess. Just not too dumb.

Depends on if you're referring to intelligence or knowledge. The statement after the poll indicates the OP is referring to knowledge, which actually has little to do with intelligence.

By most objective measures, I'm extremely intelligent, but that really doesn't matter in day-to-day life. There are plenty of people who know far more than me in certain subjects and/or are innately more predisposed toward certain tasks (to say nothing of the importance of practicing such tasks), despite being "less intelligent" on paper, so it's not like I have any basis for claiming that I'm better than them. Everyone's got talents, mine just happen to include a high IQ and borderline eidetic memory.

Pretty much. There are some things people just have mental blocks on (often seen with math), where even patiently working through it isn't enough to succeed, but for the most part, "you're not smart" boils down to "you can't do this as fast as most people so you shouldn't try," which doesn't help anyone except the teachers that are too lazy to do their jobs properly.

Indeed.

I have an IQ of 137, but if it's a comparative query that's different, because I know plenty of people who are more intelligent than I am.

I don't understand how TC is referring to knowledge by that statement. Anyway, I'm pleasantly surprised to see so many people pick no. Im definitely not smarter than the average, and it's useful to know that as you know you can't just blindly trust your own analysis on things/important issues.

TC later stated that the initial statement was along the lines of the well known "The foolish man thinks he knows everything, the wise man knows he knows nothing" - which is a saying that deals with ones awareness of just how much there is to know or study in the world/universe. A person of mostly any intelligence level is capable of increasing their knowledge base.

An adult with a genius level IQ, raised in a jungle cut off from civilization would most likely fare worse on a test of 5th grade math than your standard 5th grader. A person could also hold multiple doctorates, but still not be able to understand, let alone solve, differential equations. That's where the distinction between intelligence and knowledge comes in. It's a semantic thing, but I always ask for clarification when posed with questions about "smartness".

I typically define it like this. Intelligence is how much knowledge you have. Wisdom is the insight into said knowledge that allows you to apply it well. Someone who is smart but unwise is the sort of person who might be able to solve astrophysics problems on a napkin but falls for a simple Nigerian Prince scam. Someone with a lot of wisdom but little knowledge is the sort of person who might barely know anything about scams and have no clue what Nigeria is but would figure out that they're proooobably not related to any princes and something is fishy about the whole set-up requiring you to send money to 'get' money.
