I want a farewell for Nat.

I feel like what she got - as sad and limited as it was - was fitting. The whole reason she sacrificed herself was because she knew she'd be missed less than Clint would, and she wasn't wrong. She had very few friends, no family, and basically no life outside of superheroing (and even that, she wasn't exactly top-tier at). A funeral anywhere close to the scale of Tony's would just feel contrived and implausible, since there simply weren't enough people in the world who cared about her enough to attend, nor enough people that she cared enough about to want them there. Bruce, Clint, and Steve mourned her at the time, but they're really the only ones who were actually devastated by losing her. If there were to be a farewell scene, it'd pretty much just be those three reminiscing over beer, not an actual memorial service, and I don't think it's altogether necessary to explicitly film that.

We should make a clear distinction between citizen and civilian.

4 years of public service should be a requirement for citizenship. Otherwise you don't vote and you don't run for office.

An interesting idea, but I don't think it's altogether practical. For one thing, public service jobs are already pretty bloated with a bunch of unnecessary bureaucracy, and that would only get worse if enough jobs had to be added for everyone to be able to spend four years in one (and if said jobs weren't added, then you've got the government picking who's allowed to vote, at which point you should abandon all pretense of democracy altogether). For another, you're talking about making people delay their actual educations and careers by four years if they want to vote, which would inevitably result in fewer, less-qualified professionals, as well as a voting base that's less educated overall, even if they have more experience in public service matters. Neither are a good thing.

(Also I drink zero calorie)

Doesn't have to be a diuretic to be isotonic with blood and therefore not do anything to hydrate you.

At one level, yeah, but there usually aren't rulers involved when the pants come off, and women generally aren't that great at estimating wang sizes (men have a frame of reference in the form of their own willy, which helps). You're not going to be able to pass off a 4" member as a footlong, obviously, but if you say you've got an 8" schlong and you're really only packing a 7" package, you won't have to worry about any but the most attentive erection enthusiasts picking up on your dick deception.

Men have a frame of reference, but also usually guess wrong, as well... from what I've seen...

yeah before I worked construction I was bad at eyeballing something and getting a close enough guess.

hell even after i'm still probably off by half a inch at least usually.

I'm mostly envisioning one guy claiming to have an 8" dick sleeping with a guy who knows that his own dick is 7", and the first guy's being the same size or smaller. That pretty quickly exposes the deception. Women, on the other hand, tend not to be able to compare so easily.

And a cell phone period is still a luxury, you can just answer phone calls on a landline or a s***ty cell plan

A landline isn't going to save you that much over a cheaper cell, and won't be able to handle texts (which are now a very common way for employers to communicate with employees). You still don't need anything top-of-the-line, of course (see: my phone), but there's a pretty solid argument to be made that owning a cell phone is necessary, especially for anyone looking for work.

SirPikachu posted...
and answer emails by going to the public library

Even at minimum wage, the opportunity cost of that (realistically, it's going to be at least an hour out of each day unless you live right next door to the library) is going to be greater than just having your own internet at home, and will quickly pay for an internet-capable device. It's a bit different if you're job hunting and your time therefore isn't actually worth anything, but even then it's an asset to be able to answer emails faster than one can without home internet and an internet-capable device, especially when you also consider that being tied to a landline means potentially missing calls from employers if you have to leave the house to check your emails.

Beyond the general necessity of a cell phone, though, it is worth noting that smartphones are one of the most cost-effective quality of life improvements a person can have. With a single device, you get internet access (for free at public wifi hotspots) and all that entails (namely entertainment and socializing), the ability to communicate with others long-distance (friends, family, professional contacts...), a camera (mostly for entertainment purposes, but also a valuable asset for anyone looking for work in a field where portfolios are expected), a clock, a calendar/planner, games (many of which come at no additional cost), a music player, and a wealth of other useful and/or enjoyable features that would all cost much more if they were purchased individually. These aren't all truly necessary things, but they're nice to have, and if your luxury spending budget is tight, getting them with something as cost-effective as a smartphone is actually a very sensible decision.

Overtime is also a thing.

Yes, but the whole point of the discussion is that overtime shouldn't be needed, particularly where overtime isn't a thing in many jobs. Full-time work at minimum wage should be enough to get by reasonably comfortably (that is, basic necessities taken care of and enough left over for life to not completely suck). Overtime (whether at a higher rate of pay or just the extra hours) should be a bonus on top of that to add some extra cash to the coffers, not something that's necessary to pick up minimum wage's slack.

on $15/hr.

That's not minimum wage in most of Canada, and it certainly wasn't when 2013 cars were brand new (Alberta's rise to $15 only came last October, and it's currently the only province with that minimum). If you're going to make claims about minimum wage, you should probably actually talk about minimum wage.

zebatov posted...
I afforded a brand-new (financed) 5.2L 2013 Silverado (~$450/m), insurance ($250/m), gas ($300/m) phone @ Canadian prices ($80+/m) $200-$300/m for food, with $700 rent for a bedroom on $15/hr.

That's a total of $2080/month. At the average Canadian minimum wage of $12.49/hour, that'd be 166.5 hours of work per month, or 4.16 40-hour weeks. On average, a month is 4.35 weeks long, or 173.8 hours of work if you're doing 40-hour weeks, working out to a total of $2171/month. So yeah, at those prices, it's doable, but I'd hardly call a $91/month surplus "easily doable." Especially where you've left out utilities (easily another $100-200/month, depending on where you are), vehicle maintenance, and other recurring expenses. That gets even worse if the full-time position in question only consists of 35 hours per week, in which case you simply can't make up that $2080 at $12.49.

That said, Canadian minimum wages are generally alright. Terribly inadequate for some of the more expensive cities, and a little bit more room for luxury spending would be nice so life at minimum wage isn't devoid of fun, but they're at least moving in the right direction. Most of the minimum wage discussions here are talking about American minimum wages, which tend to be more in the $7-8 range and far less adequate for subsistence (let alone living a quasi-decent life).

CTLM posted...
Problem is, the people who say they NEED a cellphone are the ones who are the people who have the $800+ phones. I have never met a person who said they absolutely must have one who didn't have a super expensive, top-tier phone.

I have a flip phone that I paid $20 for over 7 years ago that is literally falling apart that I continue using because I'm too cheap to upgrade, and I will happily say that I need a cell phone. A land line would suffice, but be much less convenient and not that much cheaper. Consider your anecdotal impression invalidated.

I mean, if you know for a fact you're going to be outvoted and it's not a matter where you could end up with any sort of proportional representation, there isn't that much point in voting. There's also not much point in not voting, given that it's not like they had any other work to do instead of attending the vote, but it's not like they had any harmful effect on their cause by abstaining.

There is also re-election to consider. By abstaining, they deprive their future opponents of the ability to say "don't vote for ____ because he wanted to kill babies," which is not an invalid strategic move. Probably a pointless one, since the issue of abortion is so clearly divided along party lines that anyone against it would vote against the Democrat anyway, but understandable.

If you can't afford to pay your full-time workers enough for them to survive comfortably, then you've failed as a business owner.

That said, I think mandating a minimum wage at a federal level is stupid because it doesn't take into account the extreme variation in cost of living. Minimum wage should be legislated based on median rent and food costs within some reasonable radius of the workplace (e.g. a half-hour drive, provided the wage also takes the costs of driving into account) in question, which means that the minimum wage for a McD's in the Bay Area is going to be substantially higher than the minimum wage for a McD's in a small town.
