The thing is that America already makes up a bulk of media consumed in the Western world. TV, music and movies.

There's no need for America to enact a minimum amount of American content, because a majority of every Western country's programming tends to be American - needless to sayz this includes America. Countries like the UK, Australia and Canada would get more out of a policy like this, because it cuts through the America-centric content and gives people access to content that resonates with their culture more closely.

I become a drain on the party, and people tell me to drink, to join in! And I say no like multiple times, especially around my family. But this environment always breaks me down, because the asking never stops until I say yes.

The current plan is to stick to veggies like lettuce, tomato, cabbage, spinach, carrots etc., lean proteins like chicken, fish and eggs, and grains and legumes like chickpeas, kidney beans, green beans etc.

Cutting down on salt and bread, but leaving room for the occasional sandwich or serving of rice. I'm also not ruling out the option of going out to dinner every couple of weeks with my friends. This will be supplemented by cardio, and 2+ visits to the gym a week.

Take away guns, and people will use knives. Take away knives, and people will use sticks. Take away sticks, and people will tear out each other's throats with their bare teeth.

I get that you can do less mass casualty damage with knives/sticks/etcetera, but the root of the problem is hatred in the hearts of people, not guns.
People are going to get hurt if someone decides to snap and attack as many people as possible, but it would absolutely be preferable for a mass murderer not to pick up a gun.

Counselling and addressing issues that make people snap in the first place - untreated mental illness or xenophobia/racism, for example - can help, but there will always be a murderous jackass waiting to make a name for themselves through mass murder. Guns are an issue when mass shooters use them to rack up double-digit to triple-digit body counts. It's true that the issue lies with the individuals who think this is okay, but it's also true that having access to a gun lets them kill more people than a knife, a stick or their bare hands.

"the root of the problem is hatred in the hearts of people" - and these people who feel hatred in their hearts use guns to enact this hatred. The root cause doesn't overwrite the role of guns in mas murders, especially in America.

I didn't mind Canto Bight either tbh. I liked seeing all of those weird casino aliens, and I didn't even mind the whole "codebreaker" plot. The only thing Canto Bight needed to trim down was that big, pointless chase, and it would have been fine - which is why it's kind of annoying to see Canto Bight discourse reduced to "it's completely redundant, cut it completely".

Having seen the 9th movie, I now think that the entire subplot should have been removed in favor of the lore TRoS had to cram into it. But if we're going to accept TLJ as its own thing, it would have been a better movie if they cut down that chase scene. Otherwise, I don't mind pretty much all of Canto Bight. It's a fine Star Wars set piece, just with the abysmal pacing of The Last Jedi.

y'all americans really need to do something to stop your children from dying in mass shootings though. I say harsh comments because I'm sick of hearing about teenagers getting shot to death, and a bunch of conservaturds crying out "but gun restrictions won't stop people from getting shot!"

if America doesn't do something about its gun culture, more of your children will die in mass shootings. People who hate hearing about dead kids, like me, will have to see the faces of your dead young, and when we talk about how maybe Americans should pull their heads out of their asses and do something about their gun problem, people cry that the right to a firearm is an inalienable human right and that it's any number of other factors that's the real culprit.

It'd be nice if "not getting shot to death in your own school" was an inalienable human right, but because it's more important for as many people to have access to weaponry as possible, kids are gonna keep dying and people who rally for change are going to be shut down. I'll stop being a cranky disrespectful prick about your shitty gun culture when you stop burying your children because their right to live was outweighed by some scumbag murderer's right to have a weapon.

That was the most bizarre part of the film to me, how utterly crappy those creatures looked. Not their design or anything, the CGI itself. Looked straight out of the prequels.
My main gripe with it is that it's just 5+ minutes of these fucking animals tearing through a casino. At least half of it could have been cut down - it felt really slow and indulgent in a movie that's already so fucking slow and bloated.

Here's why.

The Force Awakens, while shaky at points, was a really decent Star Wars movie. It played it safe, but erring towards the older movies was not a bad idea considering the reputation of the prequels. People argued whether a good new Star Wars movie could even exist thanks to the prequels, and I think the overwhelmingly positive reception TFA garnered upon its release was a good step towards salvaging the brand. I only started to see really extensive backlash when I started posting on CE in 2016, and while I personally disliked the inescapable Star Wars hype at the time - not everything in life has to be about your fucking space magic movie, you nerds - The Force Awakens stands as a solid enough effects movie, and an enjoyable action movie.

The Last Jedi isn't as bad as I remember it being - I saw it on release, and I indulged in it because I knew how hard it was gonna fuck up the fanboys. But even then, the movie was overly long, full of bad jokes and a ton of it ultimately went nowhere. The pacing of TLJ is ultimately its greatest weakness - it's the longest movie in the franchise, but it has the slowest pace of the lot. The framing of the movie is pretty flat and dull just about every time there's an interior scene, the only big action set piece before the finale is a big CGI animal chase sequence that reeks of Disney jerking off all over it, and arguably the best part of the movie - the ending where the rebels are fighting on Crait - feels like it's tacked on and only contributes more towards the movie's bloat. I've defended Canto Bight as recently as 2 days ago, but pretty much the entire plot of TLJ with Finn, Rose and Poe is filled to the brim with bloat.

This factors into my opinion of TRoS.

The biggest problem with TRoS is that it's trying to fit 2 movies worth of Star Wars into a movie that's shorter than The Last Jedi. I've seen people complain about The Rise of Skywalker's pace by calling it "video game pacing", and I don't disagree. The first half of the movie is so rushed that everybody's lines feel like they're cut off before they should have a chance to end. In order to bring this movie in at a reasonable time, they had to be as efficient as possible with the dialogue, and the first half of the movie suffers especially from that.

With that being said, it picks up well enough eventually, and eventually it becomes a decent enough popcorn muncher. I think TFA is ultimately the most cohesive and well-paced movie of the trilogy, but I was down with most of the TRoS hype stuff. This movie has a rocky beginning, but it's not a 55% type of movie. It's a better flick than TLJ, hands down. It does music, action and fanservice much better than TLJ, though I still think that TLJ did the "Jedi Master Skywalker" thing well enough.

Maybe this trilogy wasn't so flash, but I liked TFA pretty well and I actually enjoyed TRoS for the most part (when the movie slowed its pace, which took a while). TLJ is ultimately the rotten banana of the bunch. I would go as far as to say that if half of TRoS' plot was present in TLJ, this would have been an excellent trilogy and the pacing of the trilogy would have been fine.

But TLJ barely got anything done, and TRoS had to pick up the slack and jam 2 movies worth of content into one movie. The Force Awakens was a solid-ass introduction to this new trilogy's characters, and TLJ had a compelling plotline marred by an A-plot that amounted to nothing. TRoS had a decent enough Star Wars plot, with a bunch of action and hype that's some of the best stuff of this new trilogy. But the pacing is off, and I think the characters suffer a bit from this - and it undoubtedly falls short of The Force Awakens.

But The Rise of Skywalker was a solid movie. Not perfect - it needed two movies to flesh everything out - but it did an admirable job trying to right the ship after TLJ set everything off course.

Another reason might be because it's hard to get to sleep. Right now, at 5PM, it's 41 degrees. At 10 pm, it'll be somewhere in the mid-30's. At its lowest during the night, it'll still be in the high 20's - and that's not even a guarantee. I've been tossing and turning a lot, and my sleep schedule is fucked.

So yeah, if I'm a bit snappy, that's why. Not trying to be an asshole, I'm just a bit touchy right now.

Heat waves happen. Just stay indoors and drink plenty of fluids.
47 degrees is a new record in a lot of places.

In the 2000's, when I was a kid, Sydney was struck by a 45 degree heatwave at Christmas. The temperature would get up to around 40 degrees before and after this happened - hell, the next Christmas I spent at my nan and pop's house in the country, it rained. 45 degrees was an insane temperature to hit, and that temperature was not matched for a few years after it happened. That was a heatwave.

The last few years, we've been hitting the mid 40's every single year. 43 some years, 45 other years. But in 2019 after a steadily climbing temperature, we're seeing towns and cities face 47 degree weather. Earlier this month, Australia had a place that exceeded 50 degrees.

Our weather map is on a color scale - blue for colder temperatures, green for warm, yellow for like general, optimal Aussie tropical weather, red for 30 degrees and above (AKA the hot summer weather) - and when we go up into the 40's and 50's, the map transitions into purple for 40's, and black for 50's. When I was younger, a majority of Australia would be covered with hard red on the weather map, spiking into purple where the temperatures got really bad.

This year in 2019, that weather map was hard red around our borders, mostly dark purple coming into most of the landmass, and several spikes of black.

Mark my words - in the next five years, Australian suburbs will be facing 50 degree weather. That's 122 degrees for you yanks. This goes beyond the scope of a heatwave - we had a 45 degree heatwave in the 2000's. We've been building to this, and it is almost certainly going to be worse next year.

TopicWhy does Greta Thunberg get to be a hypocrite about climate change?
MrMallard
12/19/19 11:38:10 PM
#20
Because trains, by virtue of their ability to carry hundreds of people at a time across great distances, use less fossil fuels than if everyone on that train was travelling by car - whether they all used individual cars, or if groups of four passengers shared a car between them. A majority of people can't travel without leaving a carbon footprint, especially when you're on a schedule to get to where you need to go, but some methods of transportation are better than others in regards to CO2 emissions and by changing your method of transport, you can reduce pollution just a little bit.

If Greta Thunberg was riding down the Autobahn in a Hummer limo, chowing down on McDonalds and eating luxury chocolate that still uses child labor to pick its cocoa beans, she'd be a massive hypocrite. Speaking about saving the environment while she lives it up. But she doesn't do fancy dinners, she doesn't pat herself on the back when someone tries to give her an award. I doubt she participates in fundraisers where everyone's getting a five-star meal just for being there. She's travelling by train with hundreds of other people, hitching rides with people who are already travelling to where she needs to go, and staying focused with her message of "your policies are destroying the Earth, my future is threatened as well as billions of people who are less fortunate than me, stop being such a scumbag and make some changes that ensure that my generation will have a habitable world to live in".

Which you might paint as sanctimonious, holier-than-thou or hypocritical because she's a well-off white girl from Sweden, so what room does she have to complain about being hard done by, but in that case, why aren't we listening to African activists who are talking about the plight of impoverished Africans, and how their conditions are worsening thanks to the increasingly hot climate? What are you doing to change things, and what am I doing? Are you so hostile because you think she's being a doomsday alarmist, and we don't actually need to change that much? Is it because you don't think she has any significant knowledge or experience with climate science, and it does the facts a disservice to listen to someone who isn't a professional?

Because the reason Greta Thunberg is a big deal, one reason why she goes all in and attacks world leaders to their face and talks about how the Earth is dying and it's the fault of our leaders - is because those leaders aren't listening to climate change scientists or other activists. There are people who make a living monitoring our weather conditions and researching the impact of the rising temperature of the world on nature, and we've been told time and time again that we're headed for a mass extinction event, that our icebergs are melting and raising the sea level, that wildfires are going to become more common and infinitely more dangerous. There are groups of people talking about how the rising temperatures are making it harder for people to farm, for people to survive with limited shelter available to them. Countries like Australia are in severe drought, and windfires have demolished millions of hectares of forest this year - I should know, because my country is still on fire and we've lost over 2.7 million hectares of forest. But no-one takes this information seriously as things continue to get worse in line with their predictions. Our leaders don't take the data seriously.

So Greta Thunberg, who has a bit of clout for being a young person who's dedicated herself to spreading the word about climate change, has taken a moral approach in response to this. To say "by refusing to act on this information, you're selling my future and the future of your children down the river for short-term comfort". Her activism before and after that pivotal moment has done more to affect the climate change conversation than you or I ever have, through positive and negative coverage. Her insistence to travel with others, or to travel by train, is a conscious choice to take a method of transport that produces less CO2 than hundreds of individual cars travelling in the same direction.

But taking the only realistic method of transportation with the lowest carbon footprint possible is still hypocritical because it leaves a carbon footprint in the first place. Never mind the vegan diet, using her position to tell world leaders to their face that their ass-backwards policies are ruining shit for everyone who'll live after they die, and trying to shorten her inevitable carbon footprint by travelling with people who are already heading towards where she needs to go. She's a hypocrite and a liar because she can't shorten her carbon footprint to zero and because she comes from wealth, while we all waste plastic and consume vast amounts of electricity to feed our modern middle-class lifestyles. She can get all that flack because she's an activist, despite the positive changes she's making to her travelling and dietary requirements, but we can continue to be lazy slobs because we're not claiming to be anything more than that and that makes us above criticism compared to a 16 year old girl who's using every resource at her disposal to make the world a better place to live in.

Fuck off with that.

This is a pretty reasonable synopsis.

I got it for $70 AUD, and I got a solid 60 hours out of it. It was an expense I didn't mind going in for, since it's the first Pokemon game I've been able to get my hands on in almost 10 years. I didn't hate it, but by the end I was comparing it to Pokemon Crystal in my head and Crystal was winning.

It's nowhere near as bad as the pre-release shitcanning made it out to be, but it's a little threadbare in places. I enjoyed seeing the roster of Pokemon that appeared in the game, I had a fun time in the Wild Area and I really enjoyed the different gym leaders. If y'all don't stan Melony don't even talk to me.

If you've got the cash and feel like indulging in a new Pokemon experience, it should scratch your itch well enough. It'll be a little bit barebones, but it's a solid enough game. I wouldn't advise anyone to prioritise it above other things they're interested in getting, but it's alright if you want to give it a go.

We have a full 22 minute episode of a TV show where Jack Black plays an ex-astronaut who has super intelligence, but can only use it when the sun is up, and where Owen Wilson plays his talking motorcycle friend who was a pro footballer before getting hit with a laser beam from NASA. It was written by Dan Harmon and directed by Ben Stiller, and there is a statistical probability that this show could have existed at one point. But we don't have it - we have a 22 minute pilot episode, but we don't have a full series.

How many shows have that much pedigree behind them, only to fall flat on their face? I guess none of these people were really famous at the time, which would explain it, but for one shining moment in history, we had four of the biggest acting and writing talents working on the stupidest fucking TV show imaginable. And no-one picked it up and ran with it.

If there's one single, justifiable reason for our destruction at the hands of a race of technologically superior super beings, it's that we as a society had access to a Heat Vision and Jack pilot episode and decided not to act on it.

If you think the Russian annexation of Crimea was illegal/null, then Hawaii's annexation by the U.S. would also be considered illegal and null (a fact noted by then President Cleveland, who basically called the Committee of Safety a farce; as an unrecognized entity that's purported to be in charge of the government in Hawaii would not be allowed to sign a treaty as per international law).

And if that's correct, then Obama was certainly not born in the U.S.

Dorian Gray's corruption from a sweet, naive boy to a selfish, narcissistic man, represented by his portrait showing the ravages of time while he stays eternally youthful, is a fitting criticism of the wealthy classes and the sins they commit while they present their most beautiful face to the world.

I guess I am just cutting to the point of the books.

Also, Oscar Wilde deserved better than what he got. Even his children's stories are fantastic.

Hey man, you acknowledged the risk of spoilers when you clicked into this thread - it's right there in the title. Any spoilers for classic literature are your own fault.

Also I think the Frankenstein thing is more of a literary analysis train of thought rather than presented as the main text.

If nothing else, James Corden's recurring character on Doctor Who was a bright spot in the middle of two ass seasons. The Lodger, Vincent and the Doctor and the one with Corden and the baby are my favorite episodes from series 5 and 6.

I liked Joker well enough, but I think that the movie has a lot of filler and it ultimately ran for too long.

I get the point of the movie's slow pace, and the long, quiet, awkward scenes of Joaquin Phoenix acting. I liked it. But there was too much of it, and by the end of the movie where the good stuff is happening, my enjoyment was tempered by my desire for the movie to end already.

It's a decent enough flick, and a welcome gamble after turds like Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad. But some of the atmospheric shit, like the fridge scene, extended the movie well past its use by date. It needed to be trimmed down a little bit, because there's only so many quiet Arthur Fleck scenes I can stomach before it gets old.

Edit: having read TC's criticism, I understand and respect the points being made and I don't intend to try and supercede them with my own interpretation.

It really isn't shit, though. It might not be as good as the original trilogy, I won't deny that, but The Force Awakens is a pretty good sci-fi fantasy movie. It's got good characters, fun dialogue, good action and excellent music. To reduce The Force Awakens down to dog shit is hyperbolic bullshit. Even TLJ has its moments of greatness, but that's a movie I can understand people being particularly pissed off about and I'm not gonna lose sleep over people calling it a shitty movie.

Actually, while I'm here - I don't out-and-out hate Rose Tico, I think if they're gonna add her to the team she can be alright. But I can only say, on every level of my being, that creating her to be a love interest to Finn was a fucking TERRIBLE idea.

Look at The Force Awakens, Finn and Rey clearly have a thing going on for each other. Finn has a good arc in that movie, running away from the First Order only to return and fight for what's right. At the end, he picks up a lightsaber and defends Rey with his life, getting critically wounded in the process. Throughout that entire movie they have flirty banter, and they set each other up and support each other - culminating in Finn's critical injury. Rey kisses him on the forehead before she goes off to find Luke Skywalker.

Next movie - John Boyega walks around in a bubble suit for laughs, goes on an adventure with a random engineer, and somehow this rando who he has zero chemistry with is meant to be his big romantic interest. What the fuck.

The only thing I can say is that Rose kissed Finn, and in this last movie there's some wiggle room for Finn to either rekindle his friendship with Rey and/or establish that he's not interested in Rose. Again, I don't hate Rose Tico. But Finn and Rey had such great chemistry in the Force Awakens, and it's downright baffling to me that they had to introduce a whole-ass new character to serve as his official love interest. Who the actual, ever-loving flying fuck came up with that?

I'm sober now.

I still wholeheartedly believe that The Force Awakens was a good movie, and it trumps The Last Jedi on all levels.

The action is better, the humor is better, the banter and dialogue is better, the original characters are better. The movie is shaky at points, but it feels a lot better paced and it's a solid action flick that brought that classic Star Wars fantasy back to the franchise.

All that The Last Jedi does is take what TFA set up, only to throw it in the garbage for shits and giggles. In a way I like how much it set the fandom butt-babies off - I'm not a particularly huge Star Wars fan, and these guys have made everything about them for the last 5+ years. But as a movie in a franchise, it's fucked everything up. The tone is inconsistent, the level of humor comes out of nowhere, the whole movie is 2 and a half hours of absolutely nothing getting done.

You would have to be fucking insane to say, without a doubt in your heart, that The Force Awakens is a worse movie than The Last Jedi.

two space ships chasing each other for 3 hours is a good story?
It might be a decent story if the conflict wasn't "let me be a good pilot!", contrasted with "you don't follow rules and i don't like that, I'm gonna let you fart around while your pals are missing for an hour, when they get back I'll finally tell you my plans but only when it's most convenient to commit suicide for the cause".

The Holdo event was cool, but with a little more openness this event could have been enacted on a smaller scale. I don't know - as much as I've enjoyed and defended TLJ for the lols, the franchise can't continue on the back of this shit alone.
