I shamefully know little about the process, does this mean he will for sure be impeached?

Now the Senate needs to have a trial. And since republicans control the senate it will likely be a sham trial.

These are the votes to impeach. He's been impeached for abuse of powers, and obstruction of Congress is sure to follow.

Just because the Senate refuses to do its job doesnt mean its a waste of time.

So, ELI5 moment here.

If the Senate chooses to not take action, what then? Does he stay in office? Can he still run for office next election?

the senate can vote to have the president immediately removed from office and/or barred from ever serving public office again, but we have a republican majority in the senate so trump will probably just finish his term and then win re-election in 2020 against Punished "Dementia" Biden

They are constitutionally obligated to hold a trial once the House sends them the articles of impeachment, though they get to define the rules. Following the trial they have to hold a vote on whether or not to convict. They will not convict, though some Republicans will no doubt break ranks. And Manchin will vote no because "moderate".

They can't do nothing, they have to vote. They can choose to skip all witness testimony and evidence if they really want but they still have to vote. It's not an option to just do nothing.

If the Republicans get up and leave, then Trump will get removed since it only needs 2/3rds of the votes and not 2/3rds of everyone in the Senate.

Also, for what it's worth, the House can actually just sit on the articles for as long as they want.

The Senate needs 51 senators present to have quorum

I don't think they can. That's it's own contempt of Congress.
