I'm all about green energy reform and taking better care of the environment, but how exactly is the current bushfire situation the fault of humans?

Bushfires are so common in Australia that the ecosystem depends on them for floral life to reproduce. It's not like a person set the current blazes. It's a horrible situation.
Fire chiefs from years past, as well as current fire chiefs, have mentioned climate change as a factor in worsening bushfires. The base temperature going up by even 1c worsens fire conditions significantly - things dry out more, fires are more likely to start etc. the hotter it is, and Australia's temperature is getting hotter and hotter every year. The only people who have been downplaying or refusing to talk about climate change have been our right-wing politicians, like our prime minister who left the country for a holiday after the bushfires had already been burning for a month.

Australia's climate scientists and our fire chiefs - some of which were in charge during Black Saturday, Australia's previous "worst bushfire on record" - have taken climate change into consideration in regards to worsening fire conditions. They've been warning the public and asking for an audience with the PM since last April, and the Liberal government wouldn't take climate change into account even with these experienced fire chiefs bringing it up as a very real factor.

Labor and the Greens are willing to come to the table on this. Current and former fire chiefs are willing to come to the table on this. The prick who left a burning Australia to holiday in Hawaii and his cabinet of cronies are the only ones downplaying climate change in regards to its role in our fires. Side with them, and you're siding with one of the stupidest ruling parties in Australian history.

In regards to your next point, bushfires are common in Australia. Backburning is meant to reduce the risk of these bigger bushfires, and bushfires have been happening for centuries to clear land and make way for new life. However, bushfires usually leave something behind, and with modern infrastructure we.have to balance cleansing fires with the lives and needs of the people living in the bush.

Also, one or two fires every year seems to be started by some punk kid. A few of the fires last year were lit deliberately, including by a fire fighter who would start fires so he would be called out to put it out, which got him paid. So yeah, people have been known to light some of Australia's bushfires. In prior years, deliberately lit fires have been some of the worst ones for fire fighters to deal with.

A majority of the fire, to my knowledge, is over on the east coast. But there are fires all over the mainland, including in South Australia and Western Australia.

I want to talk about something wind for a second.

Our last bushfire catastrophe was in early 2009, and we called it Black Saturday: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Saturday_bushfires

It burned 450,000 hectares of forest and grassland. Towns were destroyed. 173 people died. Many were left homeless.

Our fire warning system, up to that point, had five warning levels:

  • low moderate
  • high
  • very high
  • severe
  • extreme
Black Saturday added a sixth warning level: Catastrophic.

That's how bad Black Saturday was.

This is how bad things are now. Keep in mind, these bushfires have been happening since November: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%9320_Australian_bushfire_season

Good news first: only 19 people have died, as opposed to 173.

Bad news? 5,900,000 hectares are estimated to be lost. That's over 12 times more than Black Saturday.

Here are some crisis map screenshots I took yesterday - they're probably wildly out of date now, but they're worth checking out now.

See that massive criss-cross of streets down the bottom there? That's the entire city of Sydney. Five million people live there. Look at both of the fires next to it.

This is the affected area around Grafton. The blue symbols indicate that they aren't out of control, but you should stay up to date to make sure they don't get worse.

Why did I take a screenshot of Grafton? Because my dad lives there. Look at that tiny dot - it's a moderately sized town. Tiny compared to Sydney - the population is apparently like 19,000 people. But that's where my dad lives. And that black outline is the area that has been affected by fires.

If he flees south, he runs into the Port Macquarie fires and he puts himself at risk of running into the fires near Sydney. But he can't go north, and he can't go west.

I'm not at risk compared to other towns. I'm extremely lucky for that. But it's pretty rough seeing town after town get levelled by bushfires. The last time we had a bushfire this bad, we had to add another level of warning to our bushfires danger scale. What the fuck are we gonna do this time? How do we come back from this, and safeguard ourselves from experiencing it all over again?

Because we had professionals who warned our government about the dangers. We had people who were in charge of handling Black Saturday and its aftermath, and these people are being turned away because they factor climate change into things. Even now, our PM only mentions climate change in the same breath as "as well as other factors which are equally as culpable".

Our fire services have been getting budget cuts for the better half of a decade, now. They were facing a $40 million budget cut in 2020 before the country started burning to the ground. We're in this mess due to lack of funding, and because the people with any kind of power at the moment - our politicians - wouldn't listen to the professionals who spent years fighting Australia's deadliest fires over party politics.

Did this just happen with no warning? I mean, hurricanes, tornados, and even earthquakes get warnings for the most part.

Its terrifying that something like this can just happen outside your home without knowing beforehand.
Former fire chiefs publically spoke out about the fire risks in April of 2019: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/apr/09/former-fire-chiefs-warn-australia-unprepared-for-escalating-climate-threat

Here's a news story from November, talking about how the government hadn't bothered to meet up with 24 fire chiefs who were warning them about the worsening conditions due to climate change politics: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/nov/14/former-australian-fire-chiefs-say-coalition-doesnt-like-talking-about-climate-change

Mullins said he and 23 other fire and emergency chiefs had been trying to have a meeting with the prime minister, Scott Morrison, since April because they knew that a bushfire crisis was coming.

Instead, he said current fire chiefs had been locked out of discussions and were not allowed to mention climate change.

This government fundamentally doesnt like talking about climate change, Mullins said. We would like the doors to be open to the current chiefs, and allow them to utter the words climate change. They are not allowed to at the moment.

The Grenfell fire in London, people talked about the cause from day one. Train crashes they talk from day one. And it is OK to say it is an arsonists fault, or pretend that the greenies are stopping hazard reduction burning, which is simply not true.

But you are not allowed to talk about climate change. Well, we are, because we know what is happening.

Bibby, who was in charge during Victorias Black Saturday, said politics was the reason the government was ignoring the former fire chiefs advice.

Black Saturday, by the way, was the last bushfire that did this much destruction. I live around the middle of NSW, and smoke from Victoria was making its way up to where I live. The border is a good 3-4 hour drive away, and we were getting smoke.

The man who was in charge during Black Saturday, the bushfires that added a new level to our bushfires warning scale - called "Catastrophic" - is saying that he and another two dozen fire chiefs were ignored or dismissed because they raised an alarm about climate change. They warned us as far back as April, and now my state is burning to the ground because the government stuck their fingers in their ears and looked away. I put this squarely on the shoulders of Scott Morrison, Peter Dutton and Josh Frydenberg, Australia's biggest gang of crooks and cronies in power today.

To end on a lighter note, here's a satire website poking fun at our politicians for their adamant refusal to take action due to the climate connection: https://m.betootaadvocate.com/breaking-news/now-is-not-the-time-to-discuss-how-we-ignored-decades-of-warnings-that-this-would-happen/

Day 6: bottling!

Checked the hydrometer again, same measurement. It's time to bottle this batch. I had a small sip of the mixture, and it tastes like Cooper's - I'm looking forward to having a cold one in a few weeks.

I went and got 30 plastic bottles - they're branded the same as my brewing kit. I filled up 28 of them.

There's still some beer in the bottom of the vat I need to dispose of. Do I pour it down the sink? There's someone in my house who's really fucking anal about stuff going down the sink if it's not water - so I don't know what to do. I'll talk it over tomorrow, I think the laundry sink will be the way to go.

So, what now? I wait two weeks, and the beers will be good to drink. The longer they sit, the better they'll turn out apparently - so I think I'm gonna save them for Australia Day. After this, I want to make a fruity pale ale - Cricketer's Arms and Yenda makes good pale ales, with darker heads than your standard Cooper's. I'll have to look into that. I can also make apple cider if I want, so that's on the cards.

I have some sodium metabisulphite to clean my vat out. When I dump the waste, I'll get in there and scrub off any residue on the vat, clean the tap and wash this motherfucker out with that solution. I'll keep an eye on my bottles every couple of days to make sure they aren't overpressurized. But aside from that, I'm done!

All in all, this whole process cost me $140. But now, I have all the equipment. If I want to make another 28 22oz bottles of beer, it'll cost me $20 for the extract and nothing else.

I've decided on a name, but it's based on my real name so I won't be posting it.

Day 5: I think I'm ready to start bottling?

The brew is clear like when I started, with noticeable and consistent carbonation in the samples I've been taking. Today's hydrometer reading was close to the 1000 gravity line, which means I'm close to final gravity - if I'm not there already.

I'm gonna test it again tomorrow. If the hydrometer is at 1000 again, then it's time to bottle my brew and let it ferment for another two weeks.

I clown on you guys, but even though I don't share your more extreme views on this subject, I can at least understand the mindset behind your views. You're upset that a child is being operated on for a purely cosmetic surgery without any input or consent, since a baby can't give consent. This counts as mutilation, and you find it to be a major ethical problem to be needlessly removing skin from a baby's genitals. Funnily enough, I feel similarly about baptism - if you need an adult to speak on the child's behalf, that child is being forced into the faith with no idea of what that entails, and it's fucking weird. Given that circumcision impacts a child's life more than some stupid water getting dunked on its head, I understand where you guys are coming from. Some of you have had lasting psychological damage from being cut, and at least one of you has attempted to regrow his foreskin. That's your baggage - I understand it, and to a degree I can respect it.

What I don't respect, however, is when you guys go "well fuck, you've gone and ruined a perfectly good penis" and do this weird shaming thing for circumcised men. Like shit man, we might be cool with our lot in life, but you don't have to be an asshole and talk about how we're mutilated and that we're these pitiful creatures who'll never know how good sex truly is, how only uncircumcised men have complete penises. I think if you're really so concerned with penile parity, you wouldn't go out of your way to insult circumcised men, the same way a cut dude shouldn't be shit-talking about uncut guys. It's extremely weird, and honestly pretty insulting, to see you guys posturing about mutilation before calling circumcised penises objectively inferior.

Like I would write it all off as trolling at this point, but some of you guys have honest-to-god issues with cut penises and guys who are fine with being cut. Y'know, something that most cut guys ultimately have had minimal to no issues with. Some of you guys are obsessed with putting circumcised guys down, to the point that you have this go-to list about how cut dicks are less sensitive and how jerking off must feel so much worse that one of you posts every fucking time this argument comes up. This goes on for pages and pages, where you say we're complicit with mutilation, that circumcision is a violation of human rights, that it's sad that anyone would be happy being circumcised. I swear to god, some of you crazy fuckers have a complex about it.

Look, you're saying that a cut guy is missing out on tens of thousands of nerve endings - that's your prerogative. You want to believe that sex will never feel as good to a cut guy as it does to a guy with a foreskin, knock yourself out. You find circumcised dicks to be ugly reminders of mutilation? That's going a bit far in regards to penis obsession, but whatever - that's your bag and you have every right to feel like you do. But to the few of you who keep posting this, do you really have to rub it in and be a prick about it? I've heard it all before, and it's getting old. Ultimately, it hasn't affected my quality of life and it never will.

No-one should be calling you "anteater" in return, but when you have people who are so obsessed with circumcision that they regard cut people as brainwashed freaks who'll never be as enlightened because "they're happy with being mutilated and thus aren't particularly bright", it's really fucking hard not to clown on you. Yeah, dudes got circumcised and we're getting through life pretty okay without traumatic psychological damage. I literally don't know how my junk would feel if I had a foreskin, but why angst about that? I have a fully functioning cock and balls, I can fuck and cum just as well as any cut or uncut man and it feels good when I do it.

You want to act like you're all enlightened and shit, but there's a subset of you guys who can't do that without making cut guys out to be inherently flawed, to claim that we're missing out somehow. We really aren't.

If you feel incomplete knowing that a piece of skin was removed from you as a child and have lasting psychological damage from it, to the point of trying to regrow it, I'm sorry that circumcision has affected your life so negatively and I genuinely respect your struggle. Saying that, though, can your anti-circumcision statements not actively belittle men who are cut? At the end of the day, we all have dicks of different sizes, shapes and properties. They're all just dicks. It's not that deep.

Dudes gotta make the most with what we've got, and it's really fucking weird to hear people have a superiority complex over their foreskin, acting like cut guys can't jerk it without lube or that they'll never enjoy sex as well as them. Saying that, it's weird to hear guys have a superiority complex over not having a foreskin and responding to uncut guys with names like "cheez-wiz" and "anteater" - which I tend to see in response to anti-circumcision people clowning on them, because 9/10 times, cut guys don't start heated topics about circumcision. The dick obsession some of you have is, frankly, absolutely fucking insane.

Cut guys won't call you anteater or cheese head or whatever the fuck, given that you don't spend all your time clowning on circumcised guys and calling us lazy, mutilated idiots who are complicit in the violation of human rights. Chill the fuck out and respect us for how our dicks look, and we'll respect you for how your dick looks. Mutual respect goes a long way, stop being an unsociable prick about how our penises look and maybe more people would like you.

Fucking hell, that's low. Now his husband has to go through life without his partner, and all over $1. Extremely sad, and the worst part is that these kids will probably get away with it.

Day 4: testing day!

The brew is dark and relatively clear, like the day I started. I hoisted it up onto my counter top and grabbed the hydrometer included in the beer kit.

I drew a sample, then discarded it. Then I drew a second sample. This is the one I tested.

The first time I dropped the hydrometer in, it sank to the bottom. I had to add a bit more beer before it would float - not a good sign, but I might have just underfilled the container.

The reading I got was very close to 1000 SG. I don't know if this is good or bad - the mix right out of the vat is meant to be 1038, so to see it get to 1001 or 1002 SG is... worrying? I don't want my first beer to be a failure.

I've been referring to a video published by the folks who make my beer kit, and they mention "de-gassing" the sample if it's too foamy. I think I'm ready to call today a bust - I mishandled the sample, and I got rid of two samples of my beer. I'll be checking the gravity again tomorrow, so I'll apply what I learned today.

For now, I think I'm ready to record Day 4's SG as 1001, with a mark against it for my negligence to de-gas the sample.

I dunno bro, you seem to keep some pretty shitty company. Props for leaning away from spamming porn, but okaying the plan and giving people a place to plan a board raid seems like you would be complicit with people harassing the moderation staff.

Of course, people of power are held to higher standards. It's pretty funny when they lose it over someone as nonfactor as muffinz.
I mean muffinz has a subreddit dedicated to gathering the worst shitheads of CE to bitch about the website, knocking boots with known harassers like Tails82. I'd say he's one of the more prominent bad apples at the moment.

She grew up as a minor celebrity herself here in Australia, had her own TV show and everything. I don't think I'll ever be able to reconcile adult Bindi Irwin with the Bindi Irwin I grew up watching on TV. She might as well be Australia's collective daughter - even on my best day, I don't think I would go there.

Day 3: the beer is definitely getting less cloudy. The mixture is getting darker again, which gives me hope for the next couple of days.

Tomorrow will be my first gravity test. The brew has hovered between 24 and 30 for three days now, sitting comfortably at around 28 for most of it. This will be the first sample of beer taken out of the vat since it started brewing, so I'll be able to get a good smell of it. I'm really excited.

Interesting fact: about a litre of beer has evaporated since I started the brew on Friday. I don't know if that's good, but it's pretty fucking hot here in Australia. For all I know, the temperature has been a lot warmer when I'm not checking it, which has led to more evaporation.

I'll post pictures of the testing process tomorrow, as well as my opinion of the beer's scent. I have high hopes. Even if this batch fails, I'm planning to make a much fruitier pale ale when this is all done. In the event of failure, I won't know if I'm ready to give up brewing until the second batch.

Last I heard, people that were actually into BDSM hated 50 Shades because its just straight up assault and rape in some instances and not at all like real BDSM.
Yep. It misrepresents safe words and the main character is raped multiple times (Christian Gray gets her liquored up so he can have anal sex with her, which she doesn't want to do and is actually pretty strongly against even while under the influence of alcohol, he ignores safe words at least once because "you belong to me and I'm taking what I want from you", which misses the point of safe words to begin with and crosses the line into rape)

I really wish that GameFAQs didn't outright ban one of the strongest four-letter words in the vulgarity dictionary. I love using it as a Australian, and I would apply it heavily to this fucking police-cop.

So he feared for his life because a dog barked at him. He then went to shoot that family dog to death, but he missed, and he shot a nine year old girl instead. That alone makes him a jumpy, negligent piece of shit.

The fact that he went to court, argued that he was within his rights to shoot the dog dead and that he shouldn't be charged for accidentally shooting a nine year old? And that this line if reasoning was upheld? It's a fucking travesty. You wouldn't expect this level of delusion from a mailman, or a firefighter - both professions I strongly believe would have been charged severely for an incident like this - "I went to kill a dog because it was threatening me, and I hit a child instead". But a cop gets his day in court to argue that he shouldn't be punished for putting a bullet into a 9 year old - after aiming to slaughter their family pet - and he gets off scot free. Fuck off.

He wasn't there to bust a bunch of crack dealers, he wasn't there to start playing Rambo against the bad guys. He was there for a welfare check, went to shoot a dog and shot a child instead. He should be charged with negligence at best, and the fact that this scum walked is absolutely indefensible.
