I like long YongYea videos, they're something to put on when I'm playing Runescape for long periods of time. That being said, I'm at work right now.

Is the licensing shit they're talking about for like streamed or pre-recorded games? Like, you use a DnD ruleset for a campaign that you're airing to others and Hasbro demands a flat rate fee if you don't want to get shut down?

It wouldn't surprise me if companies like Hasbro began treating board games like TV shows or whatever. What's that, you're playing Monopoly on stream? Someone might copy the board and make their own tokens and play it for free! Pay up, Bucko, or it'll be off to the debtor's prison for you!

Remember when some kid who wasn't old enough to drive struck and killed a bunch of people because he was drunk, and his legal defence was "affluenza" - the fact that he's been so coddled making it hard for him to comprehend the world around him?

And it worked, meaning he successfully dodged jail time by saying he was so spoiled that he didn't know that drinking and driving when you're not even old enough to drive was wrong?

I never played it, but to this day I'm baffled at why they set it in like a closed city state with witch trial laws. Seems unnecessarily convoluted and grimdark for two franchises set in a fantastical reflection of our real world.

Like, Phoenix and Maya couldn't be taking a vacation in Europe when one of Professor Layton's madcap plots kicks into motion? Layton couldn't be visiting California when a puzzle-based series of killings by like a puzzle cult starts bumping people off?

The description sounds almost like it's set in an alternate universe with a Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton based on the original characters, not a true meeting of the minds between two of the biggest names in handheld mystery games.

He was in a topic talking about wedding bands and he was like "yeah I only have this wooden ring with like a black finish, cheap as hell on a cop's salary but it's just as good", and I think people were mocking him for being cheap and saying that the ring probably looked like shit.

So he posted a picture of his ring finger with his sleeping wife in the background, like a flex about how good his life is - he's married, he's lying next to his beautiful wife, the haters can go and fuck themselves because he's got everything he needs.

CE immediately jumps on him for taking a picture of his wife while she's asleep and posting it on CE. At which point he gets defensive and melts down.

MrMallard

In the 2010's, there was an investigation into a man who Pell roomed with for years. The accused had been molesting children - a charge that I'm pretty sure he got sentenced for - and the police subpoena'd Pell to testify.

He was rooming with the suspect during the period of time that the molestation was going on, Pell himself wasn't on trial, all he had to say was "I don't recall" or otherwise say that he never saw or heard anything that indicated that the suspect was a child molester. Hell, be could have thrown him under the bus and said that he was acting strangely, but Pell himself never saw anything incriminating. There were multiple ways that he could have co-operated with police, whether he himself was innocent or guilty.

Instead, he made a statement about not co-operating with police out of respect for his own privacy, and then he LEFT THE COUNTRY.

This led to a memorable slam track from Aussie comedian Tim Minchin, in which he calls Pell a coward and implores him to return to Australia, if only to sue him for slander.

https://youtu.be/EtHOmforqxk

It really highlights this Catholic culture of abuse and criminality, where at best senior members of the Catholic church cover for the sex crimes of their brethren and they're all protected by the Vatican, and at worst it's pedophiles and rapists all the way down. Pell had the gall to call it a witch hunt when the police were prosecuting a man who went to jail for raping kids, and using that as justification for why he fled the country to avoid testimony. Again, there were countless options if he was an innocent man - getting a lawyer least among them. But he acted like a pedophile when he fled from the law instead of any other decent action that would have exonerated him. It made him the target when he was a bit player at most before he fled.

Now he's dead, and I hope this continues to dog his legacy. What a crock of shit.

God I was thinking about how much I love Butter Miracle just the other day. Like the fact that it's all the one song is fantastic on its own, it blew my mind when I heard the first track blur into Elevator Boots, but what gets me is how each of the four parts of the suite captures the sound of one of their albums.

The Tall Grass has the sort of melancholy and sourness of Recovering the Satellites, Elevator Boots reminds me a ton of Somewhere Under Wonderland with the more dusty, country-inspired sound, The Angel of 14th St has the sort of offbeat charm of Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings and Bobby and the Rat-Kings has the pep and sentimentality of August and Everything After.

Will do, thanks.

I'm definitely surprised to see they're coming to Australia, but afaik they spent all of the 2010's touring aside from a couple of indie releases. They took on hosting duties for an event called the Outlaw Roadshow - which, for all that I can tell, is a festival for country music that isn't just about shitting your britches and growing taters because you're a country boy through and through. The whole Grateful Dead jam band sort of thing came full circle, and their output shifted to mostly touring for years. Like I'm pretty sure they are more of a tour band than anything nowadays.

After Adam Duritz cut off his dreads, I couldn't tell you. But I feel like this is what they do.

MrMallard

I think there's a real issue with LA youtubers, like a disconnect with the rest of the world and the building of social media engagement into a business leeches the authenticity from the content. Look at Game Grumps today, all of Arin's friends have struck out on their own and the staff left over feel impersonal and cold. It is firmly a business now, a show with paid employees doing it as a job. And as shown with that recent topic about two of Oney's longtime friends, that business side is fraught with ugliness that affects people's lives.

That being said, I do genuinely think that Arin has come a long way as a person. I think the sensitivity he takes regarding trans issues is genuine, and while I don't absolve him of how casually he dropped slurs and would do like racist voices - look at Yi Lu on The Dog Island, and how casually he dropped a slur against Asians while in character as a racist dad - I do think he's moved beyond the sort of behaviour he and Jon did where they would just yell racial slurs to make each other laugh.

I also do think that Game Grumps has stayed profitable and kept people employed due to Arin's own business savvy, and I think making a touring company for youtubers was a solid idea. As per his own words, other touring companies either didn't get youtubers or treated them with disdain, so Arin used what he knew as a youtuber and what he felt his needs were as a client booking a live show to create a touring company that catered to the specific needs of youtubers. That's pretty great.

Arin has flaws, but I also think he's grown beyond being a little Floridian demon yelling the f-slur for his friends' cartoons. Admirable, maybe not - it looks like his focus on growing Game Grumps as a company has led to friends becoming alienated and leaving, and he has a past littered with casual racism and bigotry even if he's made steps to improve. I still think he's grown up a lot and become something of a better person, and I find it ridiculous when people bring all this stuff up in the context of Arin hating Sonic or whatever. "I don't like him, ergo he's irredeemable".

That being said, I do trash ProJared to this day because I don't like him. So to each his own I guess.

Then I learned that it was the weakest Fire-type Pokemon ever. Not an exaggeration, it has the lowest base stats of any fire type Pokemon. Even to this day, after all the other fire types there have been, Slugma has the worst stats out of any of them.

Ronald Reagan neutered the CDC and obfuscated knowledge of HIV/AIDS because it primarily affected gay men and intravenous drug users, only changing his mind after his friend Rock Hudson died of the disease and after a young boy gained publicity due to getting HIV from a blood transfusion. In an administration of wanton looting, i.e. using social security as a personal slush fund and implementing the "trickle down" approach to economics that has widened the gyre of income inequality in America, perpetuating a pandemic because it wiped out people he didn't agree with is still up there as one of the most evil things he did, and as one of the most evil political acts within living memory.

Whatever "good" that conservatism has done for anyone exists alongside evil act after evil act. Speaking of pandemics, remember when Trump and his cabinet said that the country should open up during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic because people were going to die anyway and the economy was more important? Or going back even further, remember when four or five students were shot and killed by the National Guard after protesting the Vietnam War on the campus of Ohio State University? Remember a couple years ago during the BLM protests where protestors were being pulled off the streets into unmarked vans, taken to undisclosed premises and made to sign paperwork under duress?

That will always contend with whatever small amount of good that conservatives do, because evil shit like this will always exist under right-wing governments. It always has, and it always will.

All I know is when asked to pick a side between someone who almost drove a man to suicide, and the guy who stood by that victim and stayed his friend, I'm going to assume the friend is the better person

Plus, Arin grew up in America. He has no excuse to not understanding why the n word is bad. Chris grew up in Ireland where they might not all understand culturally why the n word is bad, when they don't have as much interaction with black people
I get where you're coming from, but I think you're doing it all wrong.

"He's Irish so he doesn't have the same experiences with black people including the bigotry" doesn't scan for a few reasons. I'd bet anything that media in Ireland is still predominantly American and British, which have black people in it, and Chris grew up on Newgrounds which - like much of the popular internet - is culturally American. It's likely his close bond with other Newgrounds content creators that led to him picking up their bad habits.

And if you've paid attention to Arin as a personality over the years, you'd know he plays up the rage for the show. While I do think he has a management team that he works with, I believe that he has a large hand in Game Grumps and his touring company that he created specifically to book shows for Youtubers. I do genuinely think he is a different person.

But that's not me coming to his defence over this. I'm disappointed over this, on top of the various other controversies and shit that's cropped up over the past 5 years. It feels like this is what LA does to people. The point I'm trying to make is that, like Backgroud Guy said, this is a bunch of opinions you've based on YouTube videos and your enjoyment of them. So are mine, but I'm not trying not to have blinders on about it. To give Oney that sort of leeway based on a cultural assumption like that really doesn't sit right with me.

American Dad is an anomaly. It's been on the air close to 20 years while getting progressively better.
With the exception of the season where Steve's principal appeared in most of the episodes. He's a funny character, but when they began shoehorning him into every episode it was almost unwatchable.

That's my only gripe with American Dad, and it's not even a permanent issue.

I think youre underestimating how much money hes making from both shows and overestimating how much time he needs to spend in the booth.

And American Dad is great.
I am being pretty flippant, but regarding time in the booth, McFarlane voices Peter, Brian, Stewie, Carter Pewterschmidt, the main doctor character - a Stewie and Brian-focused episode has McFarlane voicing the bulk of every episode's lines.

And I did always have a soft spot for American Dad. Actually started watching Family Guy this past week after I got COVID as a comfort-watch sort of thing, which is what made me think of making this topic.

Like he had a rough three seasons in the 90's and 2000's, the show got cancelled and revived once between the second and third season, and the show finally got axed for good. He then spent four years doing nothing but - seemingly - trying to get Family Guy back on the air again.

Now he's pushing 50, and he has to walk into a VA booth for a show he created but doesn't control to say "shut up Meg" and laugh like a moron for the 99th day in a row. Every now and again he gets to make an Orville episode, but then he has to go over to TBS and voice an effeminate alien and a lantern-jawed Jarhead moron on another show he created but doesn't control.

Do you think he ever resents the drive that put him in this prison of his own creation? Do you think he wishes he could go back in time and change everything?
