It's not but it's very safe.
After the prequel series I think it was a great idea to tread closely to the older movies. But they might just play it too safe in the end. That's respectable, even as I think TFA is a decent enough flick on its own.

Even with its flaws, though, TFA is a decent enough movie compared to TLJ. And that movie has a very solid ending, and a few solid concepts to it - just marred by Marvel level writing and a few "subverted expectations" for the sake of a joke that throw this entire new trilogy into disarray.

Even as someone who wants to see the world's most toxic nerds rip each other apart, TLJ was a crummy Space Fantasy film.

It has moments that are a bit meh, but Rey is a sweet kid with a bunch of good knowledge about tech who channels that knowledge and limited experience with the Force to strike a good balance between absolute goodness and saving those who are important to the world, Finn has an interesting cowardice arc where he redeems himself against the might of the Empire and picks up a fucking lightsaber to defend the cause, Poe is a pretty flash ace who might have benefitted from a more hands-on lesson than Holdo's "fly-boy" stuff, and while I don't hate Rose, Rian didn't have to introduce a new member to the fellowship like he did.

Rey didn't even want Luke's lightsaber. She was content being a scavenger recognised for her scavenging talents. It's only when fate led her to the blade that she began to take it seriously. But the common discourse is that she was a random Mary Sue who knew exactly what needed to be done.

The thing is that even if The Force
Awakens was a bit underwritten, it was a decent return to the sci-fi fantasy roots of the franchise. The prequels masked the tale of a man who wanted to shoot lightning out of his hands, with that of a Sith Lord who worked for years to wield absolute control over the galactic council to kill all of the good guys. All of this, so that he could eventually shoot lightning out of his hands like an asshole. Star Wars has always been a solid "rebels vs authority" story, and now you have Star Wars fans who are buttmad about someone like Rey having enough force compatibility to combat a wimpy kid, a joke of a fascist and a fleet of nearsighted cult members. Even with the weaker portions of the fanbase, I don't see how people can actively root for the bad guy because a woman, a black guy and a harshly treated flyboy are more relatable to people compare from a group who literally commit genocide.

is more of a condemnation of how we treat Alan Turing's life in today's modern world. We throw his struggle away because we got what we needed from him, and the harsh life he faced after this was glossed over in the Imitation Game.

I'll admit I might not be handling this the best, I'm kinda drunk at the moment. My overall point is "give us a miniseries that is either A) not extensively overblown or biased in favor of a party who the subject was personally against, or B) a casual, enjoyable "Been There, Shaped History" romp from someone who was content to let their inventions change the world and not be flooded with attention like a b-list Stephen Hawking.

Someone who influenced great things, but who didn't self destruct from alcohol or drug abuse. They don't have to be a total boy scout about it, but they need to have a handle on things to a reasonable degree and their drama and pathos has to come from somewhere that isn't just awkward, shitty pathos from yelling at someone.

Just a low-key dramatization of their lives that has them as a lower cog in the machine, not known or accepted even in the face of their achievements but not necessarily well-known in the wake of their deaths. A figure known for their strides, ignored by those in their business and the group who know them best, but appreciated by those who would never be seen in their extremely sanitized Hollywood expose.

Imagine a movie that captured Alan Turing's pain without the Hollywood gloss. The British government would force him to chemically castrate himself, and the cyanide--laced apple he used to kill himself has become a badge of honour for Apple fans to enjoy that company's newest items without heed or care paid towards Turing's unjust life experiences. Imagine a movie that painted the government in the wrong for their treatment of a war hero.

It'll never happen. The best of humanity will never be represented humanely, because it goes against the popular narrative of greatness. We're doomed to an early grave as long as we foist the success of humanity's underdogs onto the shoulders of the already rich and successful, who know glory like the back of their hands but who don't know how to reduce crisis in the situations we need them to know.

This "news" story is a holdover from the last couple of years. I've said it before and I'll say it again - any group of people that is picketing for a female or non-binary Santa is a tiny, negligible section of the populace at large, and a grand majority of people don't care.

This headline has been rolled out for multiple Christmases in your standard "political correctness gone mad!" fashion. It's just to get clicks and to whip the "War on Christmas" assholes up into a frenzy.

If a small subset of people want to create a new icon for their Christmas activities, they'll do that and share it with like-minded individuals. There is no real, honest to god attempt to supplant the current Santa Claus with a new character in his likeness to meet a political quota or to serve a political need, and anyone telling you that there's a serious push for this is being a disingenuous bastard.

So my post containing an "anti-white slur" got moderated, as I was expecting. NKL, thank goodness, but it made some sort of effect to get modded like that and the mod handling the message told me "don't make racist comments".

If my comment mentioning a popular condiment and a dry wheat-based consumable in regards to whiteness is offensive enough for people to mark it and for it to be modded, I would think that those same people who marked it can agree that it's highly inappropriate and offensive for a police officer to barge into a person's house, threaten to hurt them and call them the n word. As the occurrence is much more serious, and the terminology is a lot more far-reaching and impactful than the dumb horseshit I was talking about.

I would also hope that we can agree that this cop deserves to get fired for breaking into a person's house unprovoked, yelling a racial slur at them - which we've established we're sensitive about itt, what with a "racist comment" about white people getting removed for being offensive to white people - and threatening to harm them. People have been fired for engaging in far less hostile activities in their vacations, and this guy's job is one of the most powerful ones in our society.

I know some of you guys would get upset and call for a Starbucks barista to get fired for saying "Cool Whip" in a slightly aggressive tone, assuming they're insulting your whiteness. In the interest of fairness, this cop has to go.

https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/alarming-map-shows-the-extent-of-devastating-bushfires -surrounding-sydney-that-have-now-burnt-through-27-million-hectares-of-land/ar-AAK1rTh

What's our Prime Minister doing?

Well, to begin with, he argued against paying volunteer firefighters for their extraordinary service during our worst bushfires ever. Why? Because "they want to be there".

He's consistently downplayed climate change, recently lowballing it as "one of many reasons for the bushfires". Australia's fire marshals have countered back with "most of those many reasons tie back into climate change".

Our fire services have been receiving pay cut after pay cut under the Liberal National coalition government, and rather than pledge more support to our firefighters, Scott Morrison has resorted to damage control to save his own skin and the skin of his government. He would gladly throw our nation's firefighters under the bus and call them names if it means he can avoid any wrongdoing, even as they work around the clock trying to save entire communities from being burned to the ground.

A fun fact to keep in mind while reading the above: Australia's firefighters have spent more time this year battling bushfires than our politicians have spent in parliament. The same people cutting funding to fire services and talking themselves up as hot shit while they do it have served the Australian people for less time this year than the brave men and women battling bushfires.

We've know for months that our nation's fire marshals came to the government as far back as 3 years ago with bush fire warnings, promising catastrophic destruction if serious action isn't taken. Every year after these projections were shared with the government, the government has been cutting their funding anyway. And now the piper's piping, and all they can do is stand around with their dicks in their hands and try to look good while the do it.

The government refuses to come to the table on a national fire safety summit. We have 29 fire marshals willing to convene and share their views on Australia's worst bushfires in a century, pool knowledge and resources to further fight it, and offer support to our nation as our east coast burns. Our nation's fire marshals are preparing to meet independently of the government come March, showing more united leadership than our country over the past 8 years. Not because the government hasn't been invited - because they refuse to spend time or money listening to the people working their asses off to fight these fires and prevent even more permanent damage to this nation.

And the kicker on top - while our communities go up in clouds of ash and smoke, as dozens of people and thousands of animals roast to death in these fires, that stocky, balding prick Scott Morrison isn't even in Australia. He's on vacation in Hawaii.

These bushfires are one of the biggest national emergencies of this decade. And the shit-for-brains leader of my country can't be fucked sticking around to even offer some lip service, after his party spent years ignoring the lead-up to this crisis and actively sabotaging the services who could have helped us most. While our country burns, he feels it's appropriate to leave the country and enjoy some down time in fucking Maui.

There are some strong swears I wish GameFAQs would replace with those asterisks instead of banning outright, because I would love to level them at the squat, bald, shit-eating leader of my nation for the way he and his ilk have sold my nation's people down the river. He's not offering any comfort, he's not making any grand statements of solidarity, he's embarked on a PR roadshow for his dogshit political party before leaving Australians to burn to death along with their communities. The sick fuck is probably sipping vodka out of a hollowed out pineapple on the beach.

What does crediting the people at Time have to do with politics?

We all bought it. Hook, line and sinker. We all randomly cared about a literal magazine person of the year in the year of 2019 - less than a month from 2020. A MAGAZINE. A LITERAL MAGAZINE.
You genuinely sound upset over this. You can talk about sitting back with popcorn over the Greta Thunberg discourse and how cringy Time and its readers are, like you're a spectator watching a show, but you're the only person I've seen ranting and raving about "A LITERAL MAGAZINE" in a while. You wouldn't be typing in all caps about everyone "buying it" if you didn't care a significant amount about the subject matter, and it makes you look kind of unhinged.

If your goal was to look cool and collected while you gloated over people "taking the bait" set out by Time, it didn't work. You look extremely bothered right now, and it's kind of ridiculous to witness you typing about "A LITERAL MAGAZINE" in all-caps while pretending you're a cool, disaffected spectator to the supposed chaos in the fallout of Greta's Person of the Year win.

I was gonna say before I posted - I'm looking at this in a similar manner to series 1 and series 2 of New Who. The first season stuck, more or less, to the main console room - but from series 2 onwards, we saw a lot more of the TARDIS. That started with Tennant's introductory episode, where he picked out his pinstripe suit and long-ass duster in a brand new room, and became more pronounced in Moffat's era.

The sheer fact of the TARDIS getting quality-of-life improvements doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I think it indicates a positive step for the show to take. And if they've been able to do some good things to the TARDIS, especially with a new set designer, I can only hope that the new series will have more exciting set design this time around. Even as someone who erred more towards defending last season, the set design was pretty flat at times - it might be a bit better this season.

  • The console now has new monitors. A machine emits steam, and imagery is projected onto the steam to give it a really strange, interesting new look.
  • They added a set of stairs and a balcony to the set, with a door leading further into the TARDIS. This means they'll be able to do more scenes inside the TARDIS, not just at the console room.
  • They've re-jiggered the walling a little bit, moving a few of those hexagonal light panels and taking out one of the walls to give the TARDIS more space. This, as well as the balcony, will probably make the TARDIS easier to film in and allow for more dynamic shots.
  • There's a new crystal on the ceiling of the TARDIS to match the one in the middle.

Oh man - one time in sixth grade we had this show-and-tell style activity where we brought a piece of news to the front of the class and got to talk about it. I mentioned Chris Benoit's death which had happened recently - I didn't really know about Chris Benoit until his murder-suicide, but that's the news I chose to bring in. This one turd of a person knew who he was, and for like the first time since I knew this prick, he was civil and like genuinely invested in the subject matter, and like genuinely remorseful for this guy.

My teacher stepped in and said something along the lines of "wrestlers are all just big Jarhead jocks, it's not much of a loss". I can't recall exactly what she said, but it basically amounted to "well he was a murderer and an asshole, so the world's better off without him".

That kid I mentioned just before? He went apeshit like I had never seen before. Frankly, I hated this guy because of years of bullying - hell, he killed himself last year after being a druggy criminal piece of scum for the past 5 years, and I still can't bring myself to say a good word about him. But the nuclear meltdown he had at my teacher over Chris Benoit's death is probably the one time I respected him on any level.

The thing is, my teacher kept pushing back. She kept going "yeah, but he's a murderer" or "he's just a wrestler, it's not like anyone important died" and shit like that. She like unrepentantly called Chris Benoit's death insignificant, and possibly even deserved, in front of a class of 11 and 12 year olds - including a wrestling fan who looked up to this guy and was clearly distressed about it.

I made this thread months ago, but I always enjoy a shitty teacher story. It can be about you or someone else, as long as it's about a teacher being a piece of shit.

e.g. - once I was doing something cringy in third grade, and my teacher outright called me a "little idiot" in front of my whole class. It wasn't banter, she snapped at me without trying to de-escalate or get me to stop what I was doing first.

During this time, the school had a policy where students couldn't take other kids to the first aid room for liability reasons or some shit. There were multiple occasions when my 3rd grade teacher made injured kids walk to the first aid room, and chided their friends for trying to help them. It was to the point where an injured student might have been leaning on one of their friends, and the teacher would come over and separate them so the injured kid had to hobble to the first aid room - up a flight of steps - all by themselves.
