Damn, that's a shitty couple of weeks.

You need to take it easy. The stress of that assault, as well as the grief over your pet and the stress that comes with it, has probably put your body into a metric fuckton of strain. You might benefit from some therapy or a massage.

An impartial third party with experience in grief councilling can help lift a weight off your shoulders, even if you have close friends and family. Stress alone can rack up a terrible score on your body, and having someone hit those tense muscles can really help you feel better. The better you physically feel, the more resources you can put towards processing your mental health issues - issues which hit us all in times of crisis.

Hell, even have a family member or friend walk on your back if they aren't too heavy and the suggestion isn't too weird.

On one hand, it's been that fucking long since their last update and I'm kind of pissed. It's been three fucking months, and now they just drop this shit out of nowhere. If they're going to post so irregularly, I would really appreciate a bit more content then 6 games.

On the other hand - god-tier Kirby, the next Breath of Fire game (value for money since JRPGs take a while to finish), and I really fucking dig Crystalis. To my knowledge it's the only SNK game on the NES, and it runs like a dream.

Be a little quicker with it, Nintendo, but this is a good update. Better than just about any NES Online update on its own.

Even with its hiccups, I didn't mind series 11. Chris Chibnall wrote some stinkers for sure, but I love Jodie's take on the Doctor and I got more out of Demons of the Punjab then I got out of Capaldi's whole run. Granted, Arachnids in the UK was an absolute turd, but there have been turds in the past and there'll be turds in the future.

The first episode of the season looks pretty great. After the mixed reception of series 11, I'm holding out hope that the production team has refreshed, regrouped and put together a much stronger season this time.

TopicDoctor Who Series 11 was a step in the right direction
MrMallard
12/03/19 3:37:42 AM

The quality of the season was shaky, don't get me wrong. I personally liked The Tsuranga Conundrum as the dumb monster episode it was, but I get why most others didn't like it and it was ultimately episodes like Kerblam and Demons of the Punjab that shone through that season. I might not court much of an audience saying this, but I enjoyed Demons of the Punjab more than any Peter Capaldi episode.

Tangent aside, here's what I mean when I say last season was a step in the right direction: it was an honest to god attempt to try something new.

RTD's run relied on older monsters to a degree, with the Daleks in particular making a big impact on his first two seasons of the show. But there was a fair amount of good new stuff - the Krillitane, the Midnight stuff, the Ood pre-Myth Arc, just about every Christmas episode monster. Even the way that the Daleks were used in the first three seasons was an attempt to be fresh - confronting the Doctor's horror and guilt over the Time War, pulling off an intra-dimensional Trojan Horse, trying another human hybrid plot.

I don't think there was a lot of growth with Moffat's run, a lot of his stories remained rooted in the past. The Daleks have their society on Skaro, the Cybermen are splintered across the universe, the Silurians want to overthrow the surface people and regain their place as the dominant species on earth etc. I mean Moffat once made a Zygon episode where he depicted them in a similar light to ISIS, but that sucked.

Chibnall's series floundered in a lot of places, especially in episodes he himself penned. Arachnids In The UK is a turd, and the last episode is too standalone and basic in places. But he's at least trying to make new shit again.

The Stenza have potential to be awesome. Tim Shaw kept teeth as his trophies, but who's to say that Stenza don't keep different trophies of their prey? The different races that existed prior to the Time Lords have been hit or miss, but the Demons of the Punjab were fantastic. There's room for all sorts of creature features, historical stories, new alien worlds and Earth-centric stories set in Sheffield.

Moffat ended up jerking off the same handful of monsters and shitting out this monsters-under-the-bed garbage. I'd rather see the show break new ground, even if the ground ends up being shaky at times. Series 11 was rough, but if the show's not going to try new things, then why bother?

Eschewing everything else from the series' history isn't the way to go, but I can't fault Chibnall for trying new things. The early seasons of New Who were great because they were at least trying new things without getting mired in the clout of its classic monsters. A lot of Moffat's new stuff was just kind of weak throughout his entire run, and I'm liking Chibnall's take on Sheffield in the same way I liked a lot of RTD's episodes set on contemporary Earth.

Do all this while taking into consideration the present economy and federal government spending. And be sure to do math too.

China is the way it is because a fascist dickhead named Mao Zedong kept the country poor and destroyed centuries worth of buildings, manuscripts and artifacts because he wanted a strong, militarized China, and the past eras of free thought, spirituality and scientific progress stood in the way of everything he stood for. He was a communist, but the socialism he claimed to preach was a load of horseshit that deliberately kept a majority of China in poverty and almost certainly gave rise to the proliferation of sweatshops in the country while he grew fat. This is in line with the USSR, where "everybody works for the same pay" turned into "everybody works to buy El Capitan a nice lobster dinner and a Mercedes Benz".

The socialism that people are interested in today is "the rich pay their taxes, paying higher rates depending on whatever obscene amount of money they made that year, to fund the public services that keep every working American literate, healthy and able to travel". This ensures that wealth actually trickles down - lower classes of people have access to a basic level of healthcare that lets them work harder jobs and improves their quality of life in the long run, kids are educated fairly instead of less fortunate kids going to a less-funded school and getting a subpar education, libraries are funded so they can offer a better catalogue of material and can expand their archival efforts which better serves everyone in the pursuit of knowledge, and cities are able to improve their infrastructure so that people who drive or take public transport have a smoother travelling experience and are able to be more efficient.

The method of doing this - charging higher tax brackets to people making millions and billions of dollars - and the intended outcome of this - improving infrastructure for everyone, which improves everyone's quality of life - is a far cry from "everyone gets a job digging holes in a field and gets paid the same flat rate that they can barely use to feed their families, whereas I, the Supreme Leader, regularly dine on expensive cuisine and have no shortage of personal assets to further my ambitions".

If you want to read about the state of China under Mao Zedong, I recommend reading Mao's Last Dancer - an autobiographical account of a man who was born into squalor, before being chosen to attend the Beijing Dance Academy and emigrating to Australia. The book goes into the history of Mao's rule, the basics of China's socialism and what that entailed in the end, a firsthand account as to the condition of the average poor Chinese citizens at the time, and the hypocritical class politics of Mao's China. It would serve as a better base of knowledge than "If Capitalism Is Bad, Why Am Red China Policy Good Replacement Accord 2 Rad Libs??" No sane person thinks Mao's China, or the Eastern Bloc, was a good idea. But capitalism as it stands now, where corporations can get away with paying no tax at all and paying people a wage that an average adult can't actually live on, is failing the most vulnerable members of our society. You don't have to wear a fur hat and send people to a fucking gulag for Opposing The People's Republic to have a look at the squalor people are being reduced to in America and say "things are pretty fucked up, people might have more of a chance if we level the playing field".

Like this is probably just a dumb viral marketing technique, but it's so bafflingly stupid to look at. That's one reason why dialogue can come across as being bland or boring, is all. Barely anyone is going to watch a movie and count the different times a movie cuts between shots during dialogue - I know that. But one reason why a movie might have dialogue that's considered godawful or borderline unwatchable is because it's the same shit repeated ad nauseum.

To use a different example - a movie that has both characters in the same shot riffing off each other with no cutting. Think something like Let's Be Cops that's overly long but generally pretty short on physical comedy or action. You have these two dudes who are just centred in the middle of the screen jabbering a bunch of lifeless "wacky" dialogue at each other, for minutes at a time. It's not funny, it cuts into the movie's runtime despite not being that funny, and it's the same flat shots every time. The same way a movie can become stale by relying on long takes of "shot reverse-shot", it can go wrong by taking a single-camera approach and relying on that for most of the movie instead. That lack of variety shines through clear as day when it's taken to a stupid level of repetition.

Movies are a visual medium, and the way things are shot absolutely have an effect on how enjoyable the movie is to a lot of people. Even if you're not looking for stuff like this and saying "great, another samey dialogue scene", the chances are you're going to notice when the movie falls into the same lame pattern for the 25th time. It's like in John Wick 2, which I saw one day after watching the first John Wick, when I started to notice John Wick using his arm-lock roll move - I swear to god, between the first and second movies, he must use that move at least 20 times. I like the John Wick movies, but I noticed that pattern in John Wick 2 and the movie ended up being a bit of a slog after that. Still a fun movie, but that stuck out to me and it affected how much I enjoyed the final product - I was anticipating an arm-lock roll every time he got into a fight, and more times than not he did it.

Repetitive elements of a movie cut into how engaging it is, and it can be argued that Attack of the Clones uses the same method of displaying dialogue, over and over again, to such a degree that it drags the movie down. The same way you can get bored by an action hero doing the same attack over and over again.

The majority of dialogue scenes in pulp fiction alternate between two cameras. Better make a 3 hour youtube video

I was actually thinking of Pulp Fiction when I was writing my posts. Specifically the scenes with Butch and Esmeralda in the cab, Butch and his girlfriend falling asleep, Jules and Vincent driving and showing up to Brett's place, Butch meeting with Marcellus Wallace. All of these scenes were shot with both characters in the frame, with minimal to no cutting.

Other scenes have two different shots spliced together to simulate a conversation, as is the norm, but there were some creative shots in this movie - with the Butch and Esmeralda scene sticking out to me in particular, even with the cutting back and forth. And now I've sat down to think about it, the scene where Marcellus Wallace is out of frame and his entire conversation with Butch is centred on Bruce Willis' face - that's awesome. Movies like Human Traffic are built around their dialogue, despite being relatively low budget and low stakes, and they're fantastic.

Conversations that vary between two different camera shots aren't inherently bad, but it's when a bulk of your movie's dialogue is being presented in the exact same way that it becomes repetitive and boring. Shooting dialogue scenes in front of a green screen that just swap back and forth between cameras, most of the time that characters need to talk to each other? That shit sucks. Especially if there's a lot more dialogue than a movie really needs.

Oh no, two camera set up for dialogue scenes. Worst movie ever

That becomes a problem when it's the majority of conversations in your movie. You could make a movie that's half bombastic action that's shot brilliantly, but which is half dialogue-driven drama - and you can bet your ass that making the dialogue scenes look/feel flat and samey across the board is going to cut into the quality of the movie as a whole.

A two-camera set-up becomes a problem when the only want you express important dialogue is in the same "shot reverse-shot" style. That applies to any movie. Just about every movie will shoot dialogue like that, but when it's a bulk of what you're seeing, it becomes dull and weakens the movie.

TopicTrump: "Liberals are trying to change the name of Thanksgiving!"

There's nothing wrong with Thanksgiving. As far as I'm concerned it's a secular holiday.

We don't do Thanksgiving in Australia. We have a giant feed at Christmas which achieves the same goal. Not even the obscenely religious folks over here do Thanksgiving. As far as I know, that's the case with any other Christian in the world - different countries have different traditions that they fit into a Christian framework, but Thanksgiving is uniquely American, not uniquely Christian.

Another reason is that the principles of Thanksgiving - gathering kin to break bread and express thanks for their presence and support in your life - are basic human niceties that any culture or religion can get along with. Everyone from God-addled megachurch preachers to devout atheists, from Jewish and Islamic people to Hindu and Buddhist people with beliefs that are wildly distinct from each other, can appreciate the principles of Thanksgiving. It's kind of a shame that the holiday is seen as mostly Christian to my recollection, because there's nothing that's intrinsically tied to the Christian God. It's expressing appreciation for the company of your fellow man, and that defies religious boundaries.

The reason there's a "War on Christmas" is because there's a variety of holidays that take place in December. "Happy Holidays" covers Hannukah and Kwanzaa, and any other seasonal celebration that takes place at the time. It's a more inclusive way to wish good cheer for everyone. There's no push to change the name of Thanksgiving, to alter it or move the date or whatever, because in its very concept it has nothing to do with one religion above all others. It's not some bible-thumping default that sees all of civilisation marching to the beat of the birth of Christ, like in the case of Christmas. Thanksgiving is inclusive on its own, and anyone - any hardline atheists, any far-left liberal, any holiday-hating curmudgeon - can see its base principals and generally be okay with it.

I guess there might be pushback against this idea in regards to how the American settlers treated Native Americans, but as a "Christian" holiday, it has jack fucking squat to do with Christ. It's a good time all around that very little people have any vested interest in changing in any way. Hell, it would be the easiest holiday to keep, but open up to secular households in the process. This attempt to rile up the religious right is fucking brain-dead on arrival, and I hope anyone with half a braincell between them and their family realises how fucking stupid this is.

Yep, "shot reverse-shot, PS2-quality CGI, backflippin' Yoda, Space Diner, overuse of chroma-key, flatly shot" Attack of the Clones is a better movie than "plays it safe but is generally an enjoyable sci-fi fantasy romp, returns the series to its enjoyable hammy space opera roots" The Force Awakens. Get outta here.

Next you're gonna say that "does nothing of note except introduce midichlorians before being disposed of" Qui-Gon Jinn was a better character than "scavenger girl living on breadcrumbs stumbles into the adventure of a lifetime" Rey.

Topic18 y/o Girl who SHOCKED FANS by coming out TRANSGENDER is getting SURGERY! Hot??

People see cases of kids being transgender, and there's this idea that they've been brainwashed or that they're on a road to ruin or what have you. We rationalise this sort of thought through our own filters, instead of stepping back to when we were kids and dealing with the unique pressures of growing up. A hater sees this and goes "well who put this idea of sexuality into an 8 year old's head? That's disgusting and messed up!" - when the thought didn't come from a sexual place. It came from a place where a child discovered an immutable aspect of their life for the first time, found a trait that they identify with stronger than anyone in their lives can talk or punch out of them. They found a calling, like many of us do.

Some transgender people come to a realisation later in life that they were wrong, and they de-transition. Frankly, I think our brain chemistry is a lot more subject to change than we usually give it credit for. But I think in cases like these, some kids get that revelation at a young age and it sticks. This person has had over half of their life to really consider who they are and what they want, and they haven't wavered yet. Getting the surgery to make them the opposite sex, now that they're 18 and ready to live their lives as a woman, makes them genuinely happy to start the rest of their lives. I think it's great that they have such a strong grasp on who they want to be, and that they have the environment to make this a reality for themselves.

I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility for people to realise that they're transgender at a young age, the same way that people realise that they're gay at a young age. People realise stuff and bloom at different ages, but even before puberty starts it's not necessarily uncommon for something to resonate strongly with someone that affects their sexuality or personal identity into the future.

I've read more than one account of crossdressers or transgender people who had an experience with women's clothing or something frowned-upon at a young age that just clicked something into place, and from that point on they've felt something beyond the scope of what society deems acceptable for them. Sometimes it's repressed and it emerges at a later stage of life. I specifically mention crossdressers because there are men who present as male a majority of the time to keep up appearances but who only feel comfortable in a feminine alter ego - if you look, you will see a plethora of personal accounts where this is the case.

This stuff happens, and sometimes it tears pre-established lives and families apart when it re-emerges. Some kids just start off not being comfortable being put into a gendered box, and who spend their childhoods being miserable before getting the opportunity to develop as a completely different person. But either way, this stuff happens to people.

I understand the main objection to this sort of conversation. The idea is that by talking about how facets of our identity and sexuality develop at a young age, there's a potential for that language being used to sexualise children. That possibility is very real - there will be creeps who say stuff along the lines of "I got my first boner at age 6, so don't shame children for stuff like that!" when they want to facilitate an environment where they can talk sexually about children, and it's disgusting. But it bears mentioning that people have strong memories and experiences in their childhood that affect who they become as an adult, and to deny that idea in a clinical sense is being close-minded.

Do you remember your first crush, real life or on TV? Do you remember first expressing that side of yourself - getting shy around people you like, drawing pictures, even writing stories about it? That same slice of your childhood, being simple and innocent and cute about stuff, can easily apply to people who are gay or who are transgender. That same romanticised, innocent outlook on things can be expressed to a boy who wants to be a girl and vice versa, or to boys and girls who get crushes on members of the same sex. This shit occurs in our hardware sometimes, through the same channels that make straight kids get play crushes on the opposite gender.

And kids do grow out of shit - crushes they had, or that they thought they had, just days ago? Completely gone, totally non-serious or with no consequence to their mindset. They're kids, and things change quickly for them. Some kids grapple with the thought of being gay, and they end up being straight when they go through puberty. But given that you can recall back this far, do you not remember events or patterns from your childhood that have affected your life? Can you say with certainty that there wasn't an innate feeling, a calling, that you noticed as a kid and which grew with you? Maybe you liked to draw, or write, or had an innate enjoyment of a sport or hobby that faded into the background but never really left? I don't think it's that uncommon to feel like that - I think there's a ton of innocent shit that might have gotten repressed over the years through circumstances outside of our control, even through the basic act of growing up. But I think just about everyone has something like that, and for some people a revelation like that involves discovering something that's out of the norm for the first time, realising that something that they're taught as some universal truth doesn't apply to how they feel. Some kids just know that about themselves.

I watched the video, and yeah... that is quite the meltdown.

That being said, I don't know who this is or why he's melting down.

Same

To quote a reddit post:
He use to be popular on YouTube for being brutally honest and making funny videos. Now hes known on YouTube for mentally abusing his ex girlfriends and wives. He has invited young female fans out to his home in Washington to be a third party in his marriage. Many women who have been in his life have recently come forward talking about what kind of a person he is. (Threatening suicide to avoid alimony payments, filming an ex girlfriends seizure for YouTube, shaving an ex girlfriends head during sex, grooming a 15 year old while fostering her and having sex with her 4 days after her 18th birthday)

There is a lot more things wrong with this man but its too much to write.

If youre gonna watch anything involving him watch the interviews Chris Hansen did with the young women who have recently spoken out against onsion on YouTube.

Apparently there's quite a history of him being extremely skeevy around young women with it being borderline illegal at best.

He also ran a "positive body image" site for underage girls if I recall. He encouraged teens to send semi nude photos to "promote a positive body image"

That last one was ProJared, he ran a skeevy selfie Tumblr page where he kinda casually played off minors who sent him nudes.

Maybe Onison did the same thing - idk, it wouldn't surprise me if two sex creeps on the internet took notes out of each other's notebooks.
