I assume it's damn safe to say the Eeveelutions and Lucario (and I thought Lugia, but perhaps not), but who else became really popular across the globe despite not being original 151?

Kinda looking for Worldwide.... I knew Japans (which I've seen before) would be beyond fucked up.

Though admittedly it would have been fun if Arceus came in first instead of the frog.
Imagine if they had to create a more broken Arceus form instead of Ash's Greninja...

What you've seen from the fandom.

Depends if we're talking "Hottest/Trending" or "All Time Popularity". I think you'd end up with Lucario, Marill, Pichu, Rayquaza, Greninja in terms of merchandising or permeation. Suicune, Giratina, Celebi as other possible options.

That poll also may not be fully accurate because it was announced beforehand that the winner would get a special distribution, so people may have picked Mythical Pokemon because they needed one for their Pokedex rather than because it was their favorite

A lot of those Pokemon aren't CLOSE to that popular world wide is my bigger problem with it.

Zygarde top 10 for instance is laughably off from reality.

It's hard to judge the popularity in general. For example a lot of the newer Pokemon are really popular with little kids because that's the one they're more familiar with and they don't have the nostalgia for the older Generations.

"Worldwide" might be too broad to really pin down, maybe limit it more to people of our age who grew up with Pokemon from the beginning.

Of course then we'd just choose a bunch of second gen pokes since Johto was cooler than Kanto anyway.

I would assume Lucario and Greninja are pretty good answers simply for having extra avenues to publicity (Smash, movies, the whole Ash-Greninja thing, etc).

I commented on this list in another topic, but I'll post it here as well.

The list has 2 main problems, one of which you mentioned already. Another problem is the voting process was targeted towards people who are in tune with the anime, since the purpose of the voting process was to select a special distribution for the Pokemon Movie. People who don't watch the anime aren't very likely to vote on a poll to select a distribution for a Pokemon Movie. As result, the target audience of the voting process is practically non-existent of any Genwunners that would have produced a Top 100 list with a heavy Gen 1 presence.

These 2, Lugia, Suicune, and the Eevee forms (and probably Ho-oh) were the only ones I thought were absoltely locks.

Im sure Rayquaza Pachirisu, Victini, Darkrai, Keldeo, Yveital, Metagross, Salamance, Altaria, Arceus, Infernape and some others are for sure... but I wouldn't bet my life on them. I'd bet my life on the first list

I don't think Top 100 list featuring a lot of Legendary/Mythical Pokemon has anything to do with the fact that most of them have been featured in the movies. As the voting process was intended to select a Pokemon to be distributed as an event at a Pokemon Movie showing, this was clearly going to benefit the Legendary/Mythical Pokemon.

The Top 100 list does show signs of being influenced by the anime, as seen by Sylveon finishing in the Top 5. The Gen 6 anime has Serena as a major character and she has a Sylveon, so it gets frequent appearances because of this.
