What do you mean yikes? Here in the US we just hit our all time high case spike. I fucking wish we'd lock back down and get free money and groceries from the government.
This isnt gonna work for China. Omicron is too contagious, and even if they somehow managed to keep R<1 while under lockdown it would get back in the country afterward. Lockdowns made sense when there was either hope of totally containing the virus or a short term goal to achieve (e.g. vaccines, not overwhelming hospitals). Stopping the virus completely has been off the table for almost two years, we have vaccines already, and this Chinese lockdown is probably too severe for the hospital goal and theyll be in the same position theyre in now once they lift it.

I don't understand your point. Let's say I give you that China's strategy is probably overkill for merely running hospitals at an "optimal" level. I also understand lockdowns aren't a permanent solution and never were. How are you making the leap to lockdowns as a whole not making sense? What's your alternative?

  1. actually mandating that everyone get the vaccine (and wear masks for the near future)
  2. Increase testing access similar to Europe
  3. Accept that at this point most people are going to get covid no matter what you do, and spreading it out so hospitals arent overwhelmed/essential personal for stuff that keeps society functioning arent all simultaneously ill and having most people fully vaxxed is the best that we can do

It's your third point here man. Lessening the spread necessarily entails restricting the activities people can participate in, colloquially refered to as a "lockdown." You can vary the severity but that's how it's done!

Yeah, basically

I wouldnt object to like shutting down bars for a month or whatever, but I dont think a March 2020 style lockdown would have sufficient compliance to the work at this point. Its looking like omicron (whether its from being intrinsically milder or from a much higher fraction of the cases being people with some preexisting immunity) leads to a lot less hospitalization per case than delta, so I dont think we need a full lockdown to avoid hospitals from being overwhelmed (at least in places with decent vaccine uptake). The lockdown itself would also kinda defeat the point of the secondary goal of stop simultaneous infections from shutting down society since youd be... voluntarily doing that.

Someone hears socialism and thinks "oh no, they are going to take MY money and give it to OTHER people".

When in reality it just means they will use EVERYONES money for programs that benefit EVERYONE. Yeah, those who are the most well off will have less need for various social programs, but if you design a robust social safety net then the people who do get lifted up by it will be in a better position to contribute positively to the system moving forward.

I'd also like to take this time to actually apologize to people like Tony, since I was basically a reluctant Hillary voter because I had kinda resigned myself to thinking about what people will be willing to vote for instead of what people actually need. I wasn't looking beyond the weeds in front of my face, and frankly, that's doing a disservice.

It's just tough to look at voting patterns now and how people are in general, and to then actually have hope for a progressive managing to get in a position to make a real difference.

Yea we saw how quickly AOC got shut down by her own party's leadership when she suggested that members of congress shouldn't have the option to trade individual stocks (this is a reasonable philosophy actually practiced in parts of the private sector when conflict of interest is a concern). Equitable progressive policies are vilified by nearly every established political faction in the country.

This, probably. He was at UFC events earlier in the year and in arenas for various things in general when they were requiring vaccines, and at the time he was playing coy with not telling people if he was vaccinated or not, so I would have absolutely bet he was vaccinated then, though I could fully believe he's not boosted and won't be.

I could also believe he's fully vaccinated and just now openly lying about it to keep his audience. The guy's scum either way.

He hasn't been seen in a while so some people started asking questions.

One comms official said he was on vacation out of the country. Then later another said he was in the office today having meetings with the surgeon general. The second of which later then deleted his tweet stating that and protected his account. And in the middle somewhere DeSantis's own account posted a picture from two weeks ago of him meeting with some citizens but left out when the picture was from to make it seem like it was current.

So the GOP election audit in Wisconsin has begun demanding Dominion voting machine information from certain cities in Wisconsin that don't use Dominion voting machines. And then when said cities say they can't provide said information because it literally does not and can not exist, the GOP is reporting said cities as "refusing to comply" as if they're hiding something.

An interesting article that makes intuitive sense.

I think I'd extend "power" to also the power of age/majority/etc. Think about how many times we, as adults, forget what it's like to be a child. Think about boomers won't cannot fathom the troubles Gen Y/Z face. The way societal majorities don't empathize with minorities, whether of color, sexual orientation, etc.

I think, what it comes down to, is that when you don't have to care about problems, you don't. And so, because those neural pathways aren't there, you simply literally don't understand.
