And before you get defensive, I think Trevor is completely correct in this conversation, but if you think this somehow supports Chappelle, Ill ask this as nice as I can: Why do you keep doing this?

The more relevant point is why do you think this has anything to do with Chappelle?

(What I'm saying is - I literally said nothing about Chappelle or anything but you made it about that. And that's...kind of a point Chappelle made.)

I get where you're coming from though, and here's my good faith answer:

When I myself heard for the first time the full Chappelle special on its own, I had this feeling in my heart that what he was doing was not hateful, but an attempt to promote positive change in the world.

I had a lot of ignorance in me, and etc. etc. I said things that caused pain for others and I didn't like that but at the end of the day I had to acknowledge that my words had hurt others.

I spent time thinking about it, reflecting, etc. and concluded that ultimately, yes I'd hurt people whether I meant to or not.

Therefore I apologized and recognized my shortcomings here.

At the same time, part of me was like "I still think Dave isn't necessarily a jerk" but I was struggling to put into words how my view of that made sense.

Trevor helped me conceptualize all that. Yes maybe Dave made a misjudgment here or there but his aim wasn't bad. And when I first heard his comedy without bias, my reaction was to think it was fine and good because of all this laundry list of reasons I appreciated comedy.

This just helped me to re-center myself and remember that yes maybe his choice of subject was a bit off or whatever but I'm not a literal complete nutjob asshole lunatic for thinking a man has a right to stand up and tell jokes.

Idk it was like, a reminder that I'm not quantifiably an asshole for coming from where I come from.

also frankly when I go something close to a month without making a single post on this website, and then when I say one thing I get instantly met with "why do you keep doing this" as if I'm just constsantly harassing people all the time, kinda off-putting tbh!

For what it is worth while I think you generally stepped on a landmine (the politics topic will by nature have hyper political people who are very aware of a lot of things, and have seen people in bad faith act like you did in good faith) I don't think you were bad faith or anything. A lot of people forget that a lot of people are in the middle ground not in "hurr durr" but "oh are there sides to this?" Which is uncommon in political circles because the middle is used in bad faith a crap ton, so that probably rubbed everyone the wrong way.

When you see enough bad faith people just kind of always assume bad faith, which is a slight error in calculation but I understand why they would make that assumption.

I don't think you are hateful or a jerk just a bit underdeveloped in this line of thinking and not used to being put on the spot and you mostly did it to yourself but also I have known you long enough to easily give you the benefit of the doubt.

Trevor Noah has the experience of a growing up as a black person in South Africa.

Trevor Noah was able to articulate how aspects of that experience can run parallel to the discrimination experienced by black people in the United States.

Trevor Noah has the experience and comprehension of the relevant issues to distinguish between "black americans" and "african americans".

To my knowledge Dave Chapelle is not a transgender person. Nor, to my knowledge, does he have the relevant experience or expertise to provide thoughtful or nuanced comedy regarding transgender people.

Tony might have been making a logical leap to get from the post you made about Trevor to connect it to Dave.

And if all you said was "who is talking about Dave? I just saw this thing Trevor said and it made sense to me" fine.

But then your response to his assumption was to dive headlong into the Dave talk anyways, so now I'm less inclined to say "hey Tony, he wasn't even talking about Dave, he just happen to like this thing Trevor said".

not sure why you keep framing it like this. like i said before, i don't necessarily think chappelle should get canceled over the controversy. but i do think his jokes and comments were wrong and inappropriate.

Well, dumbass, the reason that popped up probably had something to do with the fact I'd spent dozens of hours listening to LGBTQ content creators talk about their perspectives, and a quarter of what they use their breath for is convincing their listeners that cancel culture isn't real.

This will be my last post on this website. To quote someone I have a lot of respect for: It is over. I'm done talking about it.

It obviously would need to be done in conjunction with some other reforms such as DC statehood but Oregons 2020 census map is as insanely gerrymandered as anything you can find in Republican states. I think this is a fairly reasonable grievance.

DC statehood in exchange for making eastern Oregon part of Idaho would be a ridiculously good deal, which is why it would never happen. The more realistic deal for DC statehood would be creating a new red state for balance. I wonder if eastern Oregon would go for that instead of joining Idaho.

The first visitor to arrive was a woman wearing a shirt that said be more american who came to yell at McCarter, with her daughter and granddaughter in tow. Idaho doesnt want usI moved out of Idaho for a reason! she shouted, standing over the table. Her son has seizures and needs medical marijuana, which is legal in Oregon, but not Idaho. (Marijuana came up nearly as often as diesel fuel in my conversations about the border move.) Ill still vote for it, though, because of the values, she said.

I think the issue with this entire discussion is how you have managed to turn people saying Comedy that punches down hurts people into personal attacks on yourself.

Ive been skimming past most of the whole Chappelle argument, puns, but I think youre taking it way more personally than is healthy for you and probably should have just dropped it after the first topic. Maybe dropping the politics topic would be for the best for you if you keep coming back to the issue, but I dont really think leaving the board should be necessary!

I work in manufacturing. We're mostly power gen, but have a couple of Navy jobs. I have conflicted feelings. I certainly don't like creating imperialist war machines, but it helps support the company and me as a result. Military spending is not a big money-burning hole where they throw in all the money that would be used for social services. Most of it goes towards American industry and people's livelihoods. Do I wish there was a better way? Sure. But you can't just slash the defense budget by 7 billion and not have severe ramifications for everyday people.

As someone who is intimately familiar with the inner workings of the military industrial complex and how we just bought dumb shit at the end of every fiscal year to maintain our budget for the next year, you really can.

If you cut the military by 7B there are many many things you could cut before messing with the common people's pay. Unfortunately, people's pay would the first thing cut. Because the government are ruthless monsters who like to buy toys instead and stupid people would blame the democrats who suggested the cuts in the first place.

i'm sure someone will explain why this can't happen, but it seems almost like a no-brainer to transition some of the military spending to infrastructure spending without killing a bunch of jobs

hell, the interstate highway system was a military endeavor
