I've said like multiple times I'm not even necessarily for total denial and it's probably not a good idea. The post you replied to even specifically said that and suggested the "reserve beds" tactic.

Some employers are starting to give the unvaccinated surcharges on their insurance premiums. I had a friend who works for a nationwide retailer telling me about how people were complaining that his company is charging them an extra $50 per check for being unvaccinated.

Maybe I'm biased because i basically went to school for insurance, but I strongly believe that while most insurance in its current American form is a scam operated by vultures, overall it is the basis for modern society and if it were better regulated in some manner it would be a huge benefit to everyone.

Insurance is pretty much just spreading potential risk across the full population of people who signed up for it. And that can be really helpful to folks like me who could definitely not afford the full upfront cost of some expensive car repair. Or, if I were to die today, my life insurance policy would cover the costs of my funeral, burial, and debts. I don't have enough saved up for all of that, so the risk is managed through insurance.

The biggest issue is that some insurance, such as health insurance, acts as a filter to something everyone should have access to. "People signed up for the risk" is a little bit different when it's their fucking bodies on the line.

Insurance is a scam, but after working in healthcare Im convinced healthcare prices are a bigger issue.

we would set our billing cost obscenely high because we knew insurances would just lower the price they paid to their maximum paid amount and we didnt want to leave money on the table. Guess what happens when there is no insurance!

Like nobody thinks car insurance is that bad, mostly because the cost of fixing cars is extremely transparent and actually has competition

The post you replied to even specifically said that and suggested the "reserve beds" tactic.

in which case you're either back to rooting for more covid deaths, or not trusting hospitals to decide for themselves how to triage and prioritize

Like I'm less opposed to that idea but I still don't see what it helps. It's not going to deter anti-vaxxers because they think they're safe. It's not going to save more lives because you're specifically instructing them to prioritize value judgments over efficiency. I'm not even sure it net helps the general public, because it's not like an anti-vaxxer is just gonna poof out of existence if they're turned away- they're gonna scream in the waiting room (with the other patients) and fight the nurse and go home and infect their family and whoever survives will at least picket. And if you are specifically talking about vax vs. unvaxxed care, I don't think it will help to ask the hospital staff to verify all the "whoops I lost my card" or "whoops I had a medical exemption" claims that you'd get.

I also realize slippery slopes are silly but I'm a bit sensitive to this particular one as somebody who would be one of the first demographics somebody would want a religious exemption from having to treat, with a likely big wave coming for the party that would support that. As I understand the medical field, it's kinda built on "you gotta treat this guy whether they are a good guy or not," and I think that's a good principle to keep around. Again, I am all for "doing something" but I think the best plan is for that "something" to be prevention rather than messing with cure. And again, neither of those things are ever going to be done anyway, so we're kinda just yelling into the void anyway.

Not to mention that variants form and spread because they come to exist in the unvadxed population, and the ones that become dominant are the ones that can also survive in the vaxxed population. Denying care doesn't solve this.

I realize everyone's frustrated and just venting but the denial of care argument doesn't go anywhere good. Arbitrary deciding of who lives and who dies on a mass scale is basically just eugenics in a different coat of paint. Direct ire at the government all you want for being too ineffective to implement any good solutions but we don't have to start entertaining awful ones.

I think the issue is that there's a legitimate problem of hospitals being overloaded because of anti-vax fuckers. The solution obviously isn't as easy as "deny care," but where we're currently at is a sad reality where good people are dying from other reasons because anti-vax assholes are clogging up hospitals and thus denying non-assholes care, and that's obviously frustrating to people. As it stands right now, said anti-vax fuckers are just free to keep being anti-vax fuckers because they're so easily able to hog up resources from more deserving people, and that's never going to change as it currently stands. The selfish are actually being rewarded for being selfish, while good people are suffering while we placate these assholes.

My patience with anti-vaxxers is at absolute zero. They are not good people. They are not deserving of being saved while others die because of their selfish actions. And yet we can apparently do nothing to punish them, and thus they will continue to be selfish, awful, terrible anti-vax assholes.

In other news, Cyber Ninjas was court ordered to turn over all of their findings and methods and so on from the audit they conducted. Instead of complying, the CEO fired everybody in the company and filed for bankruptcy, claiming they now do not have the money required to comply with the court's orders. Said CEO then turned around and said he's now attempting to start a new, similar company, with the exact same workers he fired, and continue business in election auditing.

Ive done everything Ive needed to, Ill wear a mask in close proximity, and if I get symptoms I isolate and test, but at this point Im not going to continue harming my mental and physical health staying home all day to protect people who dont want to be protected.

staying home all day is not reasonable, but i see no reason to say "fuck it i'm just going to stop adhering to any covid measures now." for instance, wearing a mask is an incredibly minor inconvenience for me. i'm happy to keep doing it until it's absolutely not necessary anymore. granted, perhaps i would have a different outlook if i wore glasses and this were a big inconvenience for me.

Unsurprisingly, I totally agree. Im back to eating out twice a week. Were at the two year mark and vaccines show to massively decrease risk of death. Im not going to take precautions that are going to save unvaccinated lives from themselves, and Im not going to avoid doing things I want to do for something so low risk to vaccinated people.

I feel like the whole But spreading creates variants! Argument also just went out the window with Omnicron and how fast it ripped through countries with way higher vaccine rates than here

Really can't relate. I've been going out to eat sporadically and even been to a few big events since getting vaccinated and the whole experience is more stressful than ever before. Especially with Omicron I don't even want to bother anymore. I've also been working in-office since...May 2020 (relatively low risk job that can't be done remotely) which is somehow MORE demoralizing, not less. The only thing that could relieve my stress over a global pandemic is if had actually been handled well.

There are definitely some things it changed that improved, but it somehow both reinforced the insurance system while simultaneously making an insurance system less possible by making it easier for healthy people to only get insurance when they needed it driving costs up.

I agree an insurance system doesn't work for health care, but it isn't even a good attempt at making one
