I think the biggest problem is that the task of deciding who gets the money would be handed over to Mnuchin with zero oversight or conditions. Giving money to companies is necessary, but we need to make sure it's going where it needs to go and that the money will actually be used in the right ways.

Another huge problem with the Senate bill is that it apparently doesn't have money for the hospitals (which very much need it).

I think irrational hatred of Trump has led to irrational hatred of the people who voted for him (ie old people). I think that there is a belief that the same age group who voted for Trump is voting for Biden in the primaries and costing Bernie his shot. Young idiots don't hate Biden, most of them can't tell you what he stands for. They hate the idea of him because he was chosen by the same boomers who chose Trump. I've spent a lot of time of the front lines of these protests. They're more akin to hissyfits.

I assume the city of Las Vegas will force the event organizers to shut it down, but if it went on as planned, we're talking about 180k nearly naked people sweating and breathing all over each other. It would make that Florida beach during spring break look like social isolation done right.

The organizers are likely waiting to be forced to cancel. My understanding with a lot of these big events is due to how the contracts are done there can be a significant financial penalty for an event to cancel itself but the penalty goes away if the event is forced to cancel.

i think Trump's already doing that? NY, Cali, and... another state either have their shipments of more supplies today or will get them early tomorrow and the national guard will help.

in the speech today he talked about how different manufacturers are making products, with specifics i don't remember off the top of my head but it included metal equipment as well as masks. hell, i think it's Hanes doing masks nowadays.

republicans tried to push through the bare minimum for the people while putting pork that favored their interests instead.

this is entirely on them rushing out a greedy policy to take advantage of the situation.

I suspect this is from a lot of Republican voters crossing over to vote in the Democratic primaries to vote for Biden in the event Trump loses re-election, so at least those voters end up with a new president that is closer to Trump on the political spectrum than Sanders would. Trump is also pretty much assured to be the Republican nominee as he has incumbent status in the Republican primaries, making it far easier for Trump voters to skip the Republican primaries to vote on the Democratic side instead.

Because of how this percolates travel restrictions absolutely have to outlast local social restrictions.

Yeah travel restrictions, bans on mass gatherings, and personal hygiene/distancing efforts are going to have to continue until there's a vaccine. Some of the most restrictive measures (e.g. closing all nonessential businesses) will likely not last the whole time, but they might have to be put back in place if things start to spike again. Until we have that vaccine there's not gonna be a return to normal.

Unfortunately, we cant live like this forever. At a certain point, we will have to amass a certain amount of risk when cases die down.

Its likely restrictions will at some point be lowered only to be raised again.

We are still a long way off from this, we are only a little bit away from the beginning of the curve.

The better people follow the restrictions the sooner we can return to some semblance of normalcy.

So DC was very smart and starting yesterday, restricted access and shutdown roads around the National Mall and Tidal Basin to attempt to thwart the normally massive crowds that show up for the peak of the cherry blossom bloom.

I had biked over there on Saturday and there were a lot of people out and about. (I biked over for exercise and to avoid the sidewalk crowds by keeping to the streets.) Granted, it was probably half the crowd it normally gets, where every parking space is taken and traffic is basically at a standstill, but it was still a lot of people.

I don't know what the situation on the ground was like on Sunday, but based on traffic patterns from Google Maps, it appears to have been pretty successful.

Yeah in CA you can still get groceries/take out/delivery, go to work if essential, and go to essential services. You can also go outside as long as you keep your distance from other people. If you have a job that easily transitions to work from home it's not that bad.

Right wouldn't a full lockdown only work if the entire world did it at the same time? Otherwise the virus will still be shuffling around in other places and will simply make its way back.

Can confirm that's basically it for NY as well. There's even recommendations to going outside to avoid cabin fever; to go take a walk, exercise.

There may well be some enforcement on social gatherings but so far hasn't happened yet. The biggest things done are all to businesses.

Oh yeah no I was being completely serious.

My 2018 into half of 2019 was crippled with an attempt and recovery and now society has crumbled so I'm just frustrated and feel like the past 8 months has been pointless.
