Here we report a 382-nt deletion covering almost the entire open reading frame 8 (ORF8) of SARS-CoV-2 obtained from eight hospitalized patients in Singapore. The deletion also removes the ORF8 transcription-regulatory sequence (TRS), which in turn enhances the downstream transcription of the N gene. We also found that viruses with the deletion have been circulating for at least four weeks. During the SARS-CoV outbreak in 2003, a number of genetic variants were observed in the human population [1], and similar variation has since been observed across SARS28 related CoVs in humans and bats. Overwhelmingly these viruses had mutations or deletions in ORF8, that have been associated with reduced replicative fitness of the virus [2]. This is also consistent with the observation that towards the end of the outbreak sequences obtained from human SARS cases possessed an ORF8 deletion that may be associated with host adaptation [1]. We therefore hypothesise that the major deletion revealed in this study may lead to an attenuated phenotype of SARS-CoV-2.

I got to Walmart as soon as it opened, and even with the longer hours closed for them to restock overnight, the shelves were still largely barren. We still managed to get enough, just with some substitutes for what we normally buy. Our online order that was supposed to get here yesterday morning was canceled a couple days earlier, lol.

very surreal here. its like driving around on christmas morning. just barely anyone on the roads or out.

we had what will likely be our last court docket for some time. im working with addicts in recovery and they are all going from daily heavy supervision and testing to none at all. all the rehab centers are releasing everyone. the stimulus checks are almost a bad thing for these people. theres going to be some serious issues

my boss was exposed to a positive patient so she is entering quarantine. im now the last person standing in our entire department. id imagine the whole organization will shut down soon, maybe a day or two. got real when i talked with my boss last night who is my strongest support system and best friend that this was probably the last time we will see each other for months. dark times

So finally my boss caved in and closed the damn shop. I mean when 7.5 hours out of 8 hours we were sitting in our asses doing nothing can't be good for him. So I sit around for at least the next Sunday and then we shall see.

Also for the people that say this is really bad, it is, BUT around 100 years ago around 1/3 of the population got infected and we had at least 30 million dead but we went on. As always had and we will always be. Duh.

There was also a world war going on when it started, and the war itself had an effect on the spread rate.

Yep had various people freaking out about this and told them to take comfort in that humanity has survived worse and that even though things look grim and we aren't as prepared as we should be, we are more prepared than we were 100 years ago.

That said, this is bad. Italy likely won't be the last country overwhelmed, they are merely the second of a list likely to grow. We are still early in dealing with this as a world.

Still in quarantine work from home in the San Francisco Bay.

My boss told me not to worry about my job even if it's slow. Currently, I worked five hours yesterday, and that's with stretching my work out. I dunno how it will be today but I'm almost done with work 2 and a half hours in.

Fortunately my lawfirm has really good morals and they have the money to withstand this, and I happen to be the only paralegal so it makes no sense to let me go and then rehire, but it's still a shitty time.

heard from multiple sources that people are having extreme difficulties with online ordering of groceries in my country. apparently the supermarkets don't have enough employees to deliver the groceries to everyone.

so yeah, i know sephy's warned right now but i thought i'd point out that his "ALL OLD PEOPLE CAN STAY INSIDE I'M SURE THEY CAN JUST ORDER GROCERIES ONLINE" point is... dubious at best.

(also, another thing i meant to bring up in one of sephy's topics is that online ordering is way more expensive than going to the supermarket. the idea that all old people are able to afford this is also wrong.)

i mean i'd expect some difficulty or even delays on getting groceries. it sucks but that's why you want food for a while. i stick with what i've said from the beginning: have a month of supplies.

2 weeks is technically the recommended but i'd definitely go a month because you don't want "recommended" to change on literally food, water, and medicine.

California should pay attention to it just because I'd expect Coronavirus + drought will be a thing in summer, for most places, filters should be fine.
