If I was a dictator, the sale of cigs would be banned, and tobacco execs and marketers would be in jail yesterday. They've destroyed so many lives by spewing a deadly, addictive, and utterly useless product. They've imposed a huge burden on our healthcare system. They've cost society hugely in productivity. They market to vulnerable teens so that they'll pick up an expensive, deadly lifelong habit.

People talk about freedom on this issue, but there's a lot of things you're not allowed to do, even to yourself. You're not allowed to shoot yourself in the temple. You're not allowed to choose to die even when every day of your life is pure pain. You're not allowed to pour toxic fumes on the street. But smoking slowly kills you and those around you, mostly because addiction makes not doing it feel bad.

Anyone who makes doing that their primary business is a sociopath who has well and truly earned jail more than anyone other than a murder or rapist.

She's not. Her voting record has her as one of the more conservative democrats. She has weird views on LGBT people and foreign dictators. I've seen a lot of people that have a baseline assumption that if you want to deny a platform to someone, it means you're incapable of challenging their ideas and simply want to silence them instead. It's presented as intellectual laziness and bullying. But that's not what it is. If we're going to have an equal society, some things have to be acknowledged as settled and beyond debate. Like the value of human life for one.

Not ideas are equal. History has proven that some need to be dismissed out of hand. And different ideas work differently than others in the marketplace of ideas. It's assumed that the truth wins, but very often it doesn't. The truth can get it's ass kicked because it's uncomfortable or complicated of because a lie has more resources behind it, is shouted, and makes people feel good or gives them someone to direct their anger towards.

That's exactly why when he has Milo or Gavin or Molyneux on, having Bernie on doesn't cancel it out and make him fair and balanced. The bigoted but viral lie is helped a lot more by being legitimized and spread than the truth is.

Letting someone come on your show and spout propaganda unchallenged is not a good thing. It's not "open minded" or "free thinking". Society is in no way improved by handing Nazis the megaphone. They operate by preying on the ignorance, prejudice, weakness and bias in the human mind. They attack the reptile/monkey parts of our brain. So when you give them a platform, you are simply poisoning legitimate debate, not widening it or improving it. Previous generations fully understood this and knew that the only thing to do with a Nazi is say "shut the fuck up, you Nazi" because convenient lies travel a lot further and faster than truth and nuance.

What I was getting at was that if he thinks the problem is that builders are making homes so they can make hundreds of thousands in profit per home, he should put his money where his mouth is and build homes for a quarter of the profit. If the profit is actually the issue.

This topic is about the solution, and that poster is saying the solution, and you seem to be agreeing with the solution, but then you do the whole "why don't you do it yourself" thing. The profit motive is the problem here. There is already more than enough housing for a people, but if people can't get a profit from renting out that housing, they'd rather step over people dying in the street than house people. It's never going to be profitable to house people with no money, so the only options are to confiscate the housing, to incentive current landlords to give housing to the homeless, or to build new housing without the expectation of profit. All three are gonna be done by the government, not individuals.

I am somewhat uncomfortable with people who have been openly planning and dreaming of becoming president specifically. Because when you have that type of dream from an early age, it shows a certain entitlement and a lack of awareness because a kid can't possibly be aware of what the job truly entails. A person is supposed to grow out of it or decide AFTER they've served their community for years that they are ready and qualified and have a base of support. You're not supposed to model your life on that goal and jump at the first chance, well before you've done any ground work and try to warp from mayor to President while saying anything you need to say to gain support along the way.

That's why people are calling him creepy, manufactured, that he has no core beliefs, and saying that he seeks power for the sake of wielding it. That's not normal behavior. Doesn't mean he'd be a bad president per se, but it's a legit reason for pause if you see things that way.

You contrast this with a committed activist like Sanders, a wrong but consistent, long tenured, and well meaning person like Biden, or a public figure that's been saying the same things since Y2K like Warren and it's not a good contrast.

It's very clear this is about protecting straight, or anti-trans men's sense of masculinity. Transpeople are only perceived as a potential threat to that masculinity, not as real people. This is exactly where Obama went wrong and why he couldn't enact a new New Deal. He had a huge coalition, huge buy in from new voters and black voters. He had exactly what you need to blast through cynical obstruction by weilding that movement as a weapon. He should have had people storming the capitol, ringing every Republican's phone off the hook, shaming McConnell and all other Republicans into oblivion. Instead, he won and dismantled his movement and tried to win with a business as usual, Washington only approach. And our institutions are so geared toward slowing things down and give the minorities huge advantages if they are willing to use them. So he got almost completely stalled.

Bernie fully understands this and so does Warren to a lesser extent. McConnell was allowed to get away with this strategy because Obama didn't understand the importance of taking your coalition to Washington so opponents can't just block you with no consequences.

This isn't to absolve Mitch. He's a truly evil actor in modern politics who is doing immense damage to our country in terms of institutions and in terms of policy. But there's a way to at least attempt to bring outside pressure to break up the logjam and it must be done or an Obama style presidency is the best case scenario.

Abuse of power is literally the most textbook impeachable offense. It's why impeachment was put into the constitution. You can read the founders saying exactly that. Anyone who doesn't acknowledge that shouldn't be talking about impeachment.

And why are people gloating about/giving Republicans a pass on voting to excuse an obvious abuse of power? That's YOUR constitutional system that's being destroyed as we speak. If impeachment doesn't work even in obvious cases, we literally have a different system of government than what's written in the constitution. It's pretty much a foregone conclusion: Dems will vote to impeach on straight party lines, the Senate will not vote to remove.

The Republicans have broken politics. You can tell because of statements like this. Any rational person looking at the evidence would understand that he did exactly what he's been accused of and that it's a textbook impeachable offense. But they've figured out that abandoning their duty for partisanship makes true believers and people who aren't paying attention think the other side is being partisan. Don't give the other side any votes so you can say it's partisan, facts and the constitution itself be damned.

The sad part is that it's very likely going to work and they know it. That means that Republican Presidents are allowed to do anything from now on.

Wealth disparities are not necessarily bad. This just reeks of jealousy or lack of understanding of basic economics.

They are when concentrated wealth is used to hold communities hostage by tying their jobs to not exercising worker power through unions or threatening to leave if they have to pay a living wage to employees. It's bad when that wealth is used to distort the political system through campaign donations, access buying, and warping where society can even seek funds from. It's bad when the wealthy use their influence to pay for custom made laws like they do through organizations like ALEC. It's bad when they use their concentrated wealth to purchase news organizations around the world and limit news that could challenge their power. It's pretty bad when they pay for fake studies that downplay the damage their money generating businesses are doing to society and the planet or when they pay to suppress true science.

None of that could happen without the extreme concentration of wealth and it all seems pretty negative to me.

There's no jealousy involved, that's simply a reflexive talking point that the wealthy have you spouting for free. Concentrated wealth paid for that rhetoric and you're not benefitting from it.

Is there an example of a system where the rich didn't capture the system? And is the solution to just have a society with no rules? Would that somehow reduce their power? It sounds like that writer is saying that government is a priori bad and so any bad thing that the government does is because government is bad and any bad thing a corporation or rich person does is also because of the government.

The problem with regulatory capture is the power amassed by individuals and groups of individuals and the lack of ethics and disincentives for corruption. We've focused on the wrong type of regulations and the people blocking those ethics regulations because there anti-all regulation. We need to increase competition and flatten out wealth disparities and we'll see less ability for regulatory capture and monopolies to form.

If the wealthy and corporations always tend to capture the government due to their disproportionate economic power, isn't that a knock against this hypothetical free market? It just seems like saying "some citizens are more citizeny than others". For example, my whole family was born in another country. My youngest sibling was 1 when they moved here and has lived here ever since and has never left the country.
