Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a moderate Democrat who is strongly opposed to impeaching President Donald Trump, is expected to switch parties and become a Republican, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

Van Drew is one of two Democrats who voted against opening the impeachment inquiry into Trump and has remained against the effort, even as the House prepares to vote to impeach the president next week. Van Drew's decision comes after a meeting with Trump on Friday.

Van Drews congressional, campaign staff and other members of the New Jersey delegation were informed he was planning to switch parties on Saturday, according to Democratic sources. The question now was when, not if, Van Drew was joining the Republican Party, according to several Democrats with knowledge of the ongoing conversations.

As of Saturday afternoon, it was still unclear if Van Drew would make the announcement before the House votes on impeachment, which is expected Wednesday.

It was supposed to be bipartisan, it was supposed to be incontrovertible. It was supposed to be something that was always on the rarest of circumstances, Van Drew told reporters about impeachment earlier this week. Well its not bipartisan.

Republicans were excitedly touting the news on Saturday, describing it as a huge blow to Democrats' effort to impeach the president, which Trump and other GOP leaders have repeatedly decried as a "partisan witch hunt." The move is also certain to score major points with Trump, whose support could be crucial in a crowded GOP primary. Trump and Van Drew are expected to hold an event together next week, according to sources on Capitol Hill.

But Democrats were already brushing off the party switch, saying Van Drew was making the calculation purely based on politics and voters would see right through his self-interested motivations in November 2020.

And Democrats are quick to note that Van Drew's departure is unlikely to impact the impeachment vote tally in any way. Democratic leadership had already been expecting a handful of their members to vote against impeachment, including Van Drew, next week.

Multiple senior Democrats tried to reach out to the New Jersey freshman on Saturday but were unsuccessful. Van Drew did not respond to calls and texts from POLITICO seeking comment.

Rumors had swirled around Capitol Hill this week that Van Drew was considering leaving the Democratic Party but he strongly denied those claims on multiple occasions. Van Drew flipped his GOP district in southern New Jersey, helping deliver Democrats the House majority. The district, which still leans Republican, voted for Trump in 2016.

The stunning move comes amid new polling commissioned by Van Drew's campaign that shows his approval ratings are under water with Democratic voters in his district. Just 24 percent of Democratic primary voters said Van Drew deserves to be reelected to Congress, and only 28 percent said he deserves to be the Democratic nominee in next years election.

TargetSmart conducted the survey from Dec. 7-10 of 390 likely Democratic primary voters, according to a source familiar with the polling. It also found 71 percent of voters would be less likely to support Van Drew in his reelection if he voted against impeachment. Only 22 percent said they would be more likely to support him.

If Van Drew voted to impeach Trump, 69 percent would be more likely to back him in next year's election and 22 percent would be less likely.

One Republican familiar with the situation said Saturday afternoon that the crossover was imminent. In the works as we speak, the member said, noting that Van Drew had a meeting at length with Trump on Friday. The meeting between Trump and Van Drew was first reported by the Washington Post.

Republicans on Capitol Hill had been whispering all week about whether Van Drew might join their ranks some senior Republicans had even encouraged the move.

Democratic leadership back him in the primary last year.

lol imagine seeing these poll results and your reaction is to just switch parties rather than doing what the poll says you should.

Oh well guess he'll be one-and-done.

Maybe make sure the Democrats in your party are actual Dems before you rely on them and before you sabotage actual liberals and left wingers? If he stayed in the party, all he would have done is sabotage popular policies and hold the party hostage like Lieberman or something.

Obviously he's entitled to whatever belief he wants, but it also does seem kinda scummy to run under one party, get elected, and then switch. You're kind of betraying the people who voted for you there.

I don't live in NJ, but I'd be mad if I voted for anyone and then they totally flip-flopped like that.

He's a dude that was going to lose his primary and tried to save his job by selling out in a blatant and hilariously obvious way.

Dems will be uniformly opposed to him and a small hiccup of anti-Trump Republicans will vote third party and he'll still lose.

Anyone that thinks impeachment is only supposed to be used under the "rarest of circumstances" doesn't have a damn clue what impeachment is supposed to be about. Our impeachment is taken from the British model of impeachment. In the 243 years we have been a country we have impeached two Presidents, maybe three next week, a Secretary of War, a Senator, a Supreme Court Justice, and 14 judges. In the 100 or so years before we were a country the British impeached something like 300 people. Basically, we're doing it wrong.

People always seem to forget the misdemeanor part of "high crimes and misdemeanors." Misdemeanor doesn't mean something is an actual crime. It means bringing shame to the office or being of low moral character, basically your character not being worthy of the position you hold. Historically, a shitload of people should have been given the boot by now.

Even if they believed that it should be under the rarest of circumstances, I feel like they're not even arguing for why this isn't that rare circumstance. They're basically just saying "Probabilistically, any impeachment is wrong!"
