Ten years = reliability and TCO matters more.

And Op, given you're Aussie, do you have an AUD budget which might make it easier for me to think up realistic car choices or should I assume it's at today's spot rate (so circa $43k AUD)?

Depends on what you like.

Muscle:
Challenger R/T
Mustang G/T

Luxury:
Lexus RC
Mercades CLA or A class
Cadillac ATS
Audi S4
BMW 3 series

Boring everyday sedans:
Honda Civic
Toyota Camery

I'm personally looking at a Mercades CLA

If Op is in Australia, pretty much only the Civic and Camry will be in that budget of $43k AUD ($30k equivalent). The other cars are priced quite a bit higher in Australia (but usually have better specifications), and some of them even attract LCT (luxury car tax).

$40k AUD seems to be the sweet spot in terms of good value. If it were me in your position and wanting a car to last ten years, just get a Corolla or a Golf. You'll be getting at least mid-high spec or maybe even sports/mainstream performance models at that price point, tonnes of practicality, good resale, decent reliability, etc.

Even though I used to be a Honda fan, their recent stuff doesn't inspire confidence and feels like they are lagging behind others in safety tech.

Tesla w/ self driving.

The cost of maintenance is way cheaper than a gas car and electricity is cheaper than gas. Tesla, at that price range, don't lose much value and they are fun af to drive.

You pay more upfront but in 5 years time you actually own more in net worth with a Tesla. However, since your price point is in Tesla range anyways just get a Tesla.

Not in Australia. Even a model 3 would be close to double that budget for the base spec. And I think our electricity costs are higher than the US too.

We don't get subsidies on EVs, and the charging infrastructure is presumably a lot less developed than the US. For many people, EVs still don't make a whole lot of sense.

For my most recent car purchase a few months ago I would've loved to get a Tesla but it just wasn't practical. Nowhere to charge since I live in a strata building (i.e. you'd need to submit alot of paper work and spend $10k+ to get the charger installed in your parking spot) and the places where I go, don't have EV charging. I also wouldn't be keen to have to stop/park/charge for 40mins in random locations.

Yeah i dont think a tesla is a great option in aus quite yet even if i could afford it

The mazda 3 astina 2019 looks great though. The major downside is the lack of a touchscreen inside

IMO touchscreens in cars are overrated. I prefer the jog dial so you dont need to look before touching and you can feel your way through. My current car has a touch screen interface and its not comfortable to use when driving since you need to look, lean forward, press, make sure it registered, etc. It has a track pad which is mildly better with its attempt at haptic feedback but I prefer something more straightforward.

I rented a Mazda 3 back when I was in the Army to go to my Grandmothers funeral. Each corner I took I thought it was going to make me lose control. I ended up jumping a rail road track with it and tucked the dropped undercarriage back in when I returned it.

I have a 2018 Honda Accord and it is freaking amazing. It has a touchscreen display that is mostly software based, rather than relying on car engineers to program UI and apps. It has Android Auto/Apple CarPlay which makes it super easy to navigate, play music, etc all without fiddling with your phone while driving. It's roomy AF on the inside and has a really smooth ride. It has great gas mileage, to the point where I only need to fill up twice a month and I can drive between major cities in Texas without filling up. I did obsessive research before buying it and I haven't been disappointed at all.

hard to say if that experience is representative of the car itself or the fact that it was a rental.

the Accord is a bit of a joke here at the moment because unlike previous models which were priced competitively with say a Camry in the $30-35k AUD price point, the new one is about to be launched at $48k AUD before taxes/delivery!

Holy crap. I test drove both and definitely liked the Accord more, but it's nowhere near 18k better. It's maybe 2-3k better. At that point, I agree with the people saying to get a Camry or just go futuristic with it and get a Tesla.

I personally think it's flawed that they're trying to catch people who would otherwise aspire to buy a base model Lexus or 3 series. Those guys want the badge and the luxury. Honda is neither in this segment. Note we don't have Acura here either. Alternatively it might catch people who look for the traditionally upmarket models like the Subaru liberty (legacy) or a high spec Mazda 6 but honestly I don't know if I would take a chance on Honda at the moment since they aren't leaders in the field with their current tech (also note we get our Honda's from Thailand which may miss out on some stuff you guys get in the US).

Valid point that I considered during the time driving it.However the amount of miles it had on it didnt justify the amount of chassis missallaighnment.

its a chunck of metal that gets you from point a to b. just go for the cheapest option. no one enjoys driving in traffic. so it doesn't matter what pricing the piece of metal you sit in cost or its features. unless its a driverless car.

Probably true. I don't have a lot of experience with rental cars only using them maybe less than ten times in the past decade, but TV has led me to believe that rental cars get a good thrashing day in day out from most customers.
