At the crack of dawn on the West Coast, the nominations for the 77th Golden Globes, put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, were announced. Here are some quick takeaways:

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association can't see women*: Wow. WOW. Cline Sciamma. Alma Harel. Greta Gerwig. Marielle Heller. Lulu Wang. Lorene Scafaria. Olivia Wilde. Mati Diop. NONE of these women who directed some of the greatest movies in this cycle were nominated in the "Best Director" category, a major and embarrassing snub for the HFPA. Not only were they shut out from this race, but from the "Best Motion Picture" categories as well. As the LA Times points out, only male-directed films were nominated in both the drama and comedy/musical categories. The only female-directed films up for nomination in broader categories were Jennifer Lee's Frozen 2 in the animated film category and The Farewell and Portrait of a Lady on Fire in the foreign-language category. Since the uproar over the snubs this morning, the HFPA president Lorenzo Soria broke out an argument familiar to anyone who has brought up gender parity, ever. "What happened is that we dont vote by gender. We vote by film and accomplishment, Soria told Variety. Barry Adelman, an executive producer of the Globes, also said, " I also think that if you look at some of the other thingsa lot of the big television shows are created by women, so I think across the board there is a good representation." Oh shove it! *In the 77-year long history of the awards ceremony, only five female directors have been nominated

Best Supporting Actor hasn't changed since 1994: In general, the acting categories are pretty white this year (as usual), but I wanted to point this out because there are a bunch of old-head actors being nominated: Al Pacino, Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Joe Pesci, Tom Hanks. The 70s, 80s, 90s are alive and well my friends. Looking purely at the names in this category, it's as if the last three decades never even happened. No way an actor under 50 gave a good performance this year, nope.

Netflix has a strong showing: The streaming giant has 17 nominations, the most of any studio. HBO is close on its tail with 15 nominations.

The "Bong Hive" is PRESENT and ready to fucking go: It's weird how foreign-language films are boxed into a category all their own, as the best film of the year is often not in English. In any case, Bong Joon-ho's incredible Parasite is nominated in the foreign picture, screenplay, and director categories.

There is a lot of articles on this and another has the films the people mad felt should have been recognized.

Some predicted Greta Gerwig would snag a nod for directing "Little Women." Others believed Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood"), Lorene Scafaria ("Hustlers") and Lulu Wang ("The Farewell") were also strong contenders.

I love that the entire article is racist as fuck, and they aren't getting called out.

Espescially the line "In general, the acting categories are pretty white this year", shows that the writer doesn't give a shit about your ability to act, just the colour of your skin.

And now as a result, the Oscars will snub quality to compensate for this so they don't get attacked. Don't be shocked if Scorcese, Philips, Tarantino, or Bong Joo-Ho get bumped.

Awards are typically just popularity contests anyways. I could see those movies being less in-the-spotlight than others, and therefore be getting less accolades.

Either case, I don't see enough evidence to claim women are being discriminated.

Should have just nixed Todd Philips.

Anyway, if this lights a fire under some asses, then fair. This is a strong year for women filmmakers, and instead of nominating one of them, they nominated the directors of "Society Meme: The Movie" and the 900,271,928th movie about how war sucks/is good/both, and people noticed. Let 'em bake a bit.

Todd Phillips does not deserve the nomination at all lol Bong Joon Ho should win it. Cline Sciamma should have received a nom for Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

I have to say, having not seen the movie, that the director of Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood not getting nominated for Best Director just looks like the Golden Globes being edgy. Whoops. And if the Oscars don't nominate her and it - the one year that there's a crowd pleasing Oscar bait movie that everyone is actually sort of rooting for - I will throw my head back and laugh.

The Farewell was pretty damn good. I think it speaks to some type of casual condescension when people see half the human race being excluded from an award and think "yep, that makes sense, men are just better "

More male directors so of course this will happen. If it was 50/50 in Hollywood then this would be a thing but shit its probably like 95/5.

This argument only makes sense if the Golden Globes weren't in a bubble and had easy access to a wide variety of movies.

When taken into account the smaller number of front runners/critically acclaimed films for these categories, it's closer to 50/50. That's the problem.

The wide discrepancy that you mentioned is an issue unto itself.
The issue with the GG is something related but not the exact same issue.
