I thought it would be fun to describe how I use the concepts that he mentions. My games are def inspired by Sakurai but they're not always action or "fun" so I might see things differently.

Hit Stop
I definitely use this often BUT I don't think it's as universal as he says. It makes your game feel arcadey by breaking up the smoothness of the simulation. If you want a more "real" kinda feeling game then you want to use this less. There's other ways to make information & events clear, like particles or contrasting colors.

Frame Rates
I'm pretty sure every game I've made uses time-based processing and not frame-based. It has its own problems but it's way easier. Fortunately I missed the frame-based era.

Risk and Reward
I honestly never thought about these in such an explicit way, but I want to in the future. It's a really nice way to view a mechanic. I usually use them as separate elements, like if I want the player to feel tension in one place I'll add risk, and to feel achievement I'll add reward. A lot of games I make have no risk, since they're going for a different emotion.

Game Dev is not a Game
This is by far the most important video yet! Key to explaining the gamedev experience. Pretty much none of the games I make are games I personally enjoy - I just don't have the ability to make those. But the act of making them is what I enjoy. I'm not a professional dev so the market stuff doesn't apply to me, fortunately. I'd prefer to keep that part fun. I also like that he said the goal was to entertain - not necessarily fun. Important distinction.

Lag
Yup. But I'm surprised he didn't mention another source of lag - handling inputs on release. Often a button press or mouse click is defined by the release, especially on web and game engines like Unity. So you have to specifically handle the down press to get the fastest response. However that can make accidental presses more common, and you might lose the ability to do button hold actions (still doable but way trickier). Usually worth it tho.

This channel is amazing. It's describing game design in a way that you don't really get on youtube. Usually it's a random fan speculating about what the dev was thinking, or explaining how they felt while playing the game. On the other end, there's super technical hour long talks that are too specific to a game or time. But this series has really found a way to explain the real decisions that designers deal with in a simple way, like the idea of a chef discerning taste that Sakurai mentioned. Kinda the same level of detail as Salt Fat Acid Heat.

Helllll yeah. It was like 90% confirmed already but still.

Even if it's garbage, it's fulfilling such a legendary prophecy. The stakes have never been so low for a movie.

I've always felt that the best video games to train someone for driving isn't actually any game that actually takes place in a car, but FPSes. No game that takes place in a car actually feels like driving does and the objective is almost never to avoid getting hit at all costs. But FPSes teach you important concepts about blind spots and how to scan for dangers and react quickly to them.

This makes sense. And I think the key thing you want to learn for driving isn't really the mechanics, but the interactions with other drivers. Using non-verbal communication and being predictable which also making quick decisions, and reading others doing the same. So a game like R6 Siege (without voice chat) would be perfect for that. Or L4D for something much less difficult.

Like 90% of the stuff I watch is on youtube so I did know of them back in the buzzfeed days. But it definitely seemed like something with medium reach at best.

my theory is our gut biome gets used to what we eat. i've known people that *only* ate poultry for years, and their body thought red meat was gross for a week or so when coming back. if i go a long time without eating sweet stuff i stop craving it and my tolerance for candy goes way down

For hard to digest things like meat that probably has an effect, but sugar is really simple. It just has a drug-like effect where if you have it often, you crave and need more. We're all wired to enjoy it at least a little though.

Not into desserts in general at all. Needs to be a 9/10 for me to enjoy it at all - 8.5 or below I'd rather skip.

That said there are some 10/10s that are just awesome. Tres leches, gulab jamun, a good gelato. But even with those it's like 3-4 bites and I'm good.

3D Sonic is a pretty low bar

Not after Colors and Generations. And honestly SA2 set the bar pretty high in terms of style & enjoyment. The level design of Sonic & Knux levels was legit great sometimes too (Metal Harbor ftw). 3D Sonic doesn't have to be good necessarily, but the least it can do is avoid being bland.

Genshin is actually really good. The gatcha stuff is pretty soft if you just use what you get randomly (but if you want something specific, you have to spend a ton of time/money, which is fair). But more importantly the exploration and quest loop is pretty much exactly what AC was going towards in its RPG games. That model makes total sense.

But why is the chinese assassin another dude bro?

Black Flag and Unity broke AC for me. I skipped all the RPG ones except for like 5 hours of Odyssey where I learned they made it so assassinations don't even OHKO anymore.

Mirage could be return to form though. I'd love if they go an even more linear-ish route like God of War.

I watched it but didn't think much of it. Still feels like no drama.

Wait I did see parts of 3 since I saw Pickle Rick. Not the others though. Nothing major seems to have changed though, this episode feels like it could be from 2 or 3. That's the problem with these shows that always escalate exponentially and then reset.

I liked it. Haven't watched since early S2 so it was some good callbacks.

That is a very surprising number. It's true that basically everyone has prime so it's way more accessible than HBO, but still.

Just watched it, 2nd half was great of course.

I don't get the point of the movie though, other than "jets cool". It's supposed to be military propaganda, but they barely mentioned the F35 once, then spent the rest of the movie on 40 year old planes. Waste of money for the military I fee like. There were also supposed to be 12 people in the class, but they only focused on 4 of them.

Then there was the bit about drones replacing pilots that was completely untouched. Worse than that, the mission was specifically about high-G maneuvering and precise aiming - 2 things that drones dominate in. If they used a drones for this mission it would've been over with no issue.

Watched the 1st episode, I liked it. Definitely felt like a movie, but still had that plot-too-slow feel of a TV show. I don't know anything about this story other than obviously Sauron comes back, so ending the episode was "omg Sauron is coming back" seems like a waste. I wonder what the real drama will be and how long it will be drawn out.

Graphics are impressive though, and the costumes & sets are great. The CG is cartoony in a fun way that I think more shows should aim for.

Forum mafia game strategy book

I think they are using this game to test their new internal tools and engines, and then releasing the result to try to make some money back. They don't actually think the game needs yet another remake. That's a fine strategy really.

Not really a problem. Digital money is already stored with sub-penny precision nowadays.

If I were in the bottom 50 or maybe bottom 25 percentile then I would do it, because the chance is high that the random person will be richer than me. But I'm in a high percentile so I wouldn't do it. Even if I got $100 but the other person lost only $50.

This was a big part of why I didn't really like Dark Souls' combat tbh

Every buffered command can be interrupted by a dodge. It can also cancel some animations early. Understand the input buffering in general is probably the hardest thing in these games, but it feels so damn good when you get it.

Just finished the Fielder Method episode, damn that was killer. All the gags were hilarious but also seemed to genuinely help the actors, and Nathan himself. That's the essence of NFY and this show too I guess.

I think I would've been annoyed if I waited for the episodes to come out week after week and the majority of each episode was the child raising thing, but binging a few in a row is really fun. Not really sure what to expect from the kid storyline.

The secret is that sandwich is a verb. A food needs to be sandwiched to be a sandwich, along with the other requirements. Tacos and sushi are obviously not sandwiched (even soft tacos - those just loosely wrap the concents).

And "hot dog" is generally short for "hot dog sandwich". The hot dog by itself has nothing to do with bread.

I also don't trust a game to reward me for my efforts when every chest you find just has some coins

I tried it for an hour recently and hated every second. Controls and action is totally forgettable. Later I read it has these cool puzzles and I'm curious enough to try again, but I dunno. It's sounds like Fez, which I loved, but that was also like 10 years ago. There's gotta be something more than yet another secret language that's just an English substitution cipher.
