But a trophy huh? How does that even work? Some sort of a secret puzzle that you can only figure out by deciphering the language somehow?

One of the secret treasures (which are optional) requires you to translate a poem in the manual in order to solve it.

Yeah I didn't know about that one, my bad. I was only referring to stuff needed to get the good ending.

The payoff for getting all of the secret treasures was super lame anyway.

Unless you are spoiling yourself this is impossible to know, which in most games isnt a big deal but in a puzzle game its a problem.

Yeah I think they could have made it more obvious that the treasures were optional. I kinda figured they were since they're all golden statues with no description/meaning obviously attached, but I admit I questioned whether there'd be a meaningful payoff after all when the portal appeared in the treasure room.

Its also weird that the game doesn't tell you that you only need 10 fairies for ending B! The fact that it has a written message that says "100%" on the manual page made me think I needed all of them, but all you get for that is a treasure.

I also don't trust a game to reward me for my efforts when every chest you find just has some coins

How long until the first non-coin chest?

I genuinely couldn't remember how often chests had coins, so I've started up a new file, and got to the first boss:

Chest 1: Stick
Chest 2: Coins
Chest 3: Consumable Berry
Chest 4: Consumable Explosive
Chest 5: Coins
Chest 6: Consumable Firey Explosive
Chest 7: Blue Consumable Bottle (don't remember what it does)
Chest 8: Piece of Heart Bottle
Chest 9: Coins
Chest 10: New Heart Bottle

(Only Chest 7 was a secret.)

So, it's a small sample size, but maybe 30% coins, 40% consumables, 30% permanent useful things.

I'd be curious to know if this is better than say, Wind Waker, a game where I was extremely frustrated that every secret was just rupees.

Stick def doesn't count. I think I got the 3 coins and 1 of the bombs.
