The American people are nearly 100% hardwired by the public school scaling of anything below a 70% being a failing grade and therefore bad.

You can talk about a true critical 5/10 average or a 3/5 film standard, but for a vast majority of people if they see a 6.8 they assume something sucks.

This post is awesome even though I don't agree with it. The sentiment sadly seems to be the consensus amongst the hardcore Tolkien fans.

Like I have never seen this much backlash for a product before the product was even out. Has there ever been anything in any media that has gotten this much backlash from fans before it even came out? As a huge fan of the movie trilogy, I liked the first two episodes (no problem with the slow pace). But the fans are like nope, this shit should not have aired, despite great reviews everywhere.

Hardcore Tolkien fans hate the show, and all the movies too and think the people who hate the show for breaking lore but still like the movies are dumb fucks.

No shit it's not a new phenomenon but nothing on this scale unless we count The Last of Us Part II which was because of the leak. Not because the fans didn't want the original content to be 'tainted'.

anything thats a reboot or a remake or that has women or minorities in it is hated well before it comes out.

Maybe Im too picky but from the LOTR trailer I wasnt digging the costumes and hair/makeup. Galadriel kinda looks like shes wearing a cardigan. Also heard some of the haircuts are modern. Ill still watch but its hard not to expect the show to meet the attention to detail of Jacksons trilogy because while those films are great, that was 20 years ago and this is the most expensive tv show of all time. And the Jackson trilogy laid out a damn good blueprint so yeah you should be able to get close to that level with the practical stuff

Ultimately Im most interested in a compelling story and good performances and how its shot/directed but if the wardrobe or hair and makeup looks cheap its going to affect feeling immersed in whats happening

finished episode 2, and that one wasn't quite as bad. still think everything involving galadriel is pretty trash, but love elrond and durin and all their scenes. orc scene was okay, a rare bright point in bronwyn's storyline.

Galadriel was absolute fast-forward material in that episode, but Elrond is phenomenal, Durin was a delight, and the other plotlines at least have enough key intrigue to pull me along. It's not House of the Dragon quality of writing, but it's definitely an event show, and I do enjoy it.

I enjoyed this one, getting to see Numenor and get introduced to Isildur is pretty cool

however I don't understand Galadriel's need to antagonize everyone she meets, is this their idea of "strong female lead"

Arrogance is her character flaw. She thinks she knows better than all these stupid humans around her because she's been around since long before any of their ancestors. She's seen more shit than they have and it's obvious to her that if everyone just did things her way it would all be much better.

This is the topic?

Well, okay.

I thought this episode was maybe the best so far? Adar is intriguing. Lil' bit of orc action ain't bad. Elendil is probably my favorite human character. And the end of the episode was pretty cool.

Also, more Elrond and Durin which should be an entire show itself. It's a little jarring how much more enjoyable that thread is than the others.

So far, the show is solid. It's not going to breach my top 5 for the year, doesn't touch GoT, but it's a good watch.

i get that but then don't depict this event in this specific way - if every important character survives an apocalyptic event while we're told so many of the unimportant ones don't, then the storytelling feels cheap

It diverges from the material it's covering (I wouldn't say "wildly"), but Isildur absolutely can't be killed off in that moment, and the people who included him in the show surely understand why.

Yeah a pyroclastic flow would kill all those people in spectacular and sudden fashion. I'll admit that it did 'bother' me a bit but it was cool.

The showrunners worked with the Tolkien Estate to make sure the overall story points were OK. They are condensing 1500-2000 years (and potentially more). So it is a bit different but not what I would characterize as wildly so.

The first four episodes didn't give me a lot of hope for the showrunners. I enjoyed it well enough, but I'm a sucker for Middle Earth stuff. The last four episodes were definitely much better. I'm so pleased that it ended up being good. Really looking forward to Adar v Sauron and as much Durin III/IV as I can get.
