watched this over the weekend. I like the practical effects and the realness of it.

Story wise, it's the perfect combination of military propaganda and adolescent male fantasy. I feel like it's the first time in a while a movie has been so obvious and upfront in its intentions to purposefully fail the Bechdel test and uplift a white male hero without any sort of subtlety or character flaws, so I'm not surprised a bunch of men's rights activists and magats are into it. I'm not surprised it's making a gazillion dollars.

The question is if other blockbusters are going to follow suit. I think probably.

Just watched it. The mission was really good, but the rest of the movie wasn't too great.

I just finally watched the original last night.

Just watched it, 2nd half was great of course.

I don't get the point of the movie though, other than "jets cool". It's supposed to be military propaganda, but they barely mentioned the F35 once, then spent the rest of the movie on 40 year old planes. Waste of money for the military I fee like. There were also supposed to be 12 people in the class, but they only focused on 4 of them.

Then there was the bit about drones replacing pilots that was completely untouched. Worse than that, the mission was specifically about high-G maneuvering and precise aiming - 2 things that drones dominate in. If they used a drones for this mission it would've been over with no issue.

Like both Top Gun movies without thinking either is all that great.

waiting for it to just be on a streaming subscription service without having to pay $20 to watch it

It was a fun popcorn flick.

To me it felt like the first movie with better-written human drama, even though the plot wasn't really the same the basic appeal still is. Which is itself perfectly fine.

Uh, Maverick very much has character flaws, and the focus of the whole plot is his place in the modern world. Also the critics loved it too for whatever that's worth.
