I spent at least half of the video thinking this was another joke video from him. There's something about how he says he wants to honor indie devs and proves it by how he's always made sure to include them in his content, but then names only some of the biggest, best-selling titles of the past five years, that sounded so much like one of his usual sarcastic parodies.

So he basically wants to be another Devolver but with a fraction of the resources and experience. Good luck to them but this is something you throw money at people who know what they are doing to get your company off the ground and not one you control directly yourself with no experience making games.

I mean good on him if he wants to throw money at indy devs that need the push. He claims to not want creative control so if he just works as a brand and a face for devs making something good that might otherwise never get seen, it could be great.

Hopefully he doesn't wind up like the same publishers he criticizes.

He must have like 10x the capital of other pubs, and be willing to entirely cancel games after 3-4 years of dev if they're not good enough.

Most CEOs kind of suck so I don't see the issue. I had no idea he had 7 million subscribers, that's gotta be some decent money

The only line in the video that gave me pause was "I'm not going to take creative control, but I do want to be involved"

I could be wrong, but that sounds like someone in denial

Regardless- The more publishers, the better in my opinion

I think it depends on what context he means by "involved".

Getting in on the ground floor and speaking with the teams to see what they need, rather than just ignoring them to let them do what they do with what they have?

Getting in on the ground floor and discussing his opinions and recommendations, the implication of him being a revenue source meaning they may have to take those seriously?

One would hope the formed based on him specifying having the best contracts imaginable, but time will tell.

My understanding, personally, is that video game publishing is really just gambling.

  • As a publisher, you have a lot of money, and you want to gamble to convert it into more money.
  • So, you search for an incomplete game, that has the most promise of success, and you throw a flat amount of money at it, in exchange for a large percent of the final profits.
  • Because the money you spend is a known flat amount, but the final profits could be astronomical, it's a fair bet that you're going to turn your money into more money...
  • ...as long as you're good at predicting which games will succeed!!


So from that perspective, I think it's totally fair that dunkey could be good at this. It seems to me, all you need is money, and ability to know whether a game will be successful.

What's this "flat amount of money" the publisher might be throwing at an incomplete game?

  • Marketing money I guess, although it's unclear how much this actually costs. You can probably just throw review keys at reviewers, and some press kits.
  • Giving up-front money to the developers, before the game is out, so they can keep working on the game full-time, instead of having to have other jobs.


I think the nice thing Dunkey will provide for developer he works with, is that, when his company sends press kits to reviewers, they'll actually open the email, because dunkey is famous. That's a pretty huge benefit.
