I LOVE the early vote in Virginia. 66-33. Every single time it's like this. The Republican Party has a stronger early vote in Virginia than Crono does in these contests. I don't think we've ever had a character come back from 66-33. 61/39 was about the largest.

But having seen Virginia before, I have little doubt Biden will put it out and easily.

Yeah, Virginia has been called for Biden despite him being in the mid-30s

This is the first time I can remember when Kentucky wasn't instant-called. Or is it that they can't call the state until the Central Time polls close?

I think they wait until all of the polls are closed. Regardless they'll have to wait until Lexington's county votes get diluted by the rest of the state.

Unless the map I'm viewing is glitching all of Kentucky's votes are mail votes. Trump currently has 76.8% of the vote there.

I'm talking about over the 230 year history of the system. On average, the swing states are centrist. And the system is designed to let the far right and far left should have a seat at the table, but tries to keep power in the center.

But wouldn't "the centrist" option still apply in other states. For example California may be 65/35 for Biden, but if you were to align people from the most Republican to the most Democrat then the people in the 35th percentile would be considered the center and in the end it's those votes that are being courted by both sides.

If you do that, you might as well just go full bore into using the popular vote. The fundamental problem with the US, is it tries to straddle the line of treating the states as equal but independent entities, while also trying to govern them as a whole. That's where you get stupidity like marijuana being legal at the state level, but illegal at the federal level.

It still gives the smaller states more power since they have more electoral votes than they should.

red sox 777 posted...
The electoral college provides stability by ensuring that power is always concentrated in the swing states, whichever states those may be at the time. Since the states holding power are always the ones most balanced between the two sides, it is hard for major change to occur. And change is always risky.

Does it though? Polarization among the non-swing states is increasing because they are being completely ignored by the other side, the swing states going slightly to one side opens the door for the far-right/left opinions to have a seat at the table.

Just having the electoral votes in each state be given out proportionally would help things immensely as it would force the Democrats/Republicans to campaign across the nation rather than in a few select states and you wouldn't have to open up the constitution to do so.

But there's a potential situation where, say, whoever is in charge of running the electoral college meeting in the state allows the faithless vote to go forward. The other campaign sues, and the state courts determine that the decision was incorrect, that the elector should have been replaced under state law. Meanwhile, the electoral vote has already been cast and submitted to Congress. In that situation, I don't think the state courts have the power to stop Congress from counting the vote that was cast, and SCOTUS would also likely refuse to step in. But there's some room for ambiguity.

Whoever is running the meeting is likely from the party that won in that state so any faithless voter would hurt their own campaign and will be dealt with quickly.

red sox 777 posted...
Or, another scenario: the faithless elector is replaced under state law. Undeterred, he casts his vote anyway, and takes it to DC where he presents it to Congress. When Congress meets to count the votes, one of the parties wants to count that vote. Of course this could potentially devolve into the constitutional crisis of a party that won both houses of Congress but lost the presidential election simply submitting a complete set of electoral votes, and counting their own set, even though everyone knows those are not the real electoral votes. But if Congress says so, then their word is final.

I much prefer the constitutional crisis where the Queen fires her whole cabinet, dissolves Parliament, and rules from the throne though.

This makes no sense it would be if a senator who lost an election (or is impeached) tried to place a vote, it obviously wouldn't count.

That's what I mean, the SC has already said the states have the power to deselect/punish an elector. This was done in 2016 for three faithless electors where they were replaced or had their vote changed. The Washington faithless electors while fined still had their votes counted as that is the punishment in that state. It's not in the SC place to change the votes.

Two - there have to be zero faithless electors. If it is really looking that close, it's hard to imagine someone not pulling some strings, or even for some individuals to decide they have a responsibility to vote faithlessly. This works in combination with:

Not quite, the faithless elector would have to switch their vote from Biden to Trump (or vice versa) for it to matter. Them switching to some other person wouldn't matter as none of the candidates would have the 270 electoral votes needed to win (e.g. 269-268-1 result will still go to the house). An elector switching between the two major nominees has never happened, though I imagine there would be a lot of pressure from all sides.

Though considering the top three candidates in the electoral college are considered by the house, I imagine there will definitely be some faithless electors to try to give their secret choice (Sanders, a non-Trump Republican) a chance to be President.

Corrik7 posted...
If there is faithless electors, that is bound to end up at the SC.

Assuming it was done in a state with no laws regarding faithless electors the SC should uphold the vote. The constitution is quite clear that these electors decide who wins an election.

Does hydroxycholorquine work? I have zero idea and im a highly educated person. Trump says it does and he is an idiot, so i tend not to believe it. On the other side the very anti-trump media has been obsessed with saying that it doesnt work starting from the second it came out of his mouth, long before any relevant trials or studies, so for all i know it could work just fine but they dont want him scoring points being right.

Trying to find objectivity these days is exhausting

It works during the early stages (low virus count) of infection. The downside is people wait (or are unaware) until it's too late.

On the flip side taking it prophylactically has side effects to the point where it's at best debatable that the benefits outweigh the negatives. To use Ulti's analogy, you wouldn't take chemo prophylactically to prevent cancer.

This is just fantastical thinking. If you keep non-homeschooled kids home, they are not going to do as well in remote learning situations. Plus you're also bringing in parents, who may or may not have the ability, temperment or time to monitor a full day of school.

I mean, if schools decide to enact social distancing the children aren't going to do well regardless, the added stress of essentially avoiding your friends and classmates will do that. Two meters may not be a huge distance, but mentally for some people its akin to social isolation.

Also parents don't need to be present, even popping in and out to make sure the kid is participating would do wonders.

*Sigh* trying not to lose my patience with you.

Kids tend to conform to the authority right in front of them and with others that are following the rules around them. Kids who have had no structure in a learning environment and are in houses surrounded by their TV's, toys, games, etc, are much harder to get to learn and follow instruction. This also compounds in development throughout their life and can cause a learning deficiency.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, just having a discussion...

I'm just not seeing the difference, classrooms for K-3 all have toys and even play time in their curriculum, not including recess/lunch (at least at my elementary school). I don't think you are giving kids enough credit. If they can know the difference between "playtime" and "schoolwork time" in the classroom, they can also do the same at home.

There's also the added benefit of more parental support. It's well known in schools with high levels of parental support kids tend to perform better.

Not really, half the population lives in the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor, if it were a US state it would rank 20th in terms of population density (around North Carolina)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_City%E2%80%93Windsor_Corridor

Outside of Ontario and Quebec; British Columbia (Vancouver) and Manitoba (Winnipeg) have one metro area that contains over half the province's population while Alberta (Calgary/Edmonton) and Saskatchewan (Regina/Saskatoon) have two metro areas with more than 50% of the province's population.

Canada just has a lot of space where nobody lives in.
