That mint condition copy of Super Mario Bros. is not really worth 1 million dollars, it's supposedly worth 1 million dollars because some people said it was worth a million dollars and were willing to pay for it. You can do that with any item.

I can take that receipt and if I can convince someone it's worth a million dollars then it becomes worth a million dollars. Welcome to an extreme version/quirks of economics

If you right-click save a jpeg, it as just as much a copy of the image youre buying direct as the one youre seeing online. Unless you get the actual physical machine the digital art was made on, youre still getting a literal copy.

I think the best way to think about purchasing physical/digital items is what you are really paying for is the "certificate of authenticity." The item in this case is just a bonus.

We were already heading towards that direction and the pandemic sped things up.

There are few reasons to watch a movie in a theater over streaming it at home. One of those reasons is to watch it with other people and get their live reactions (like a sporting event), but that only applies to a subset of genres.

Indirectly I do believe the two games are close (55/45), but it's quite likely IX has overtaken VIII on GameFAQs.

At least it has over six years ago, maybe the trend has reversed, but I wouldn't bet on it.

It's not like Samus was indirectly far from Mario in 2005 either.

The Nintendo fanbase does change its hierarchy over time, look at Bowser/Yoshi/Luigi

We'll likely have to wait a bit. Officially, Nintendo claimed ~850k were sold in the US for its first month (October 2021), throw in the Christmas season plus worldwide numbers and it could be the best selling Metroid game already (or very close to it), not that it's a difficult task since no Metroid game has broken 3 million.

It could, but I'm going to need to see it perform against something with some known strength before pulling that trigger.

The performance here is pretty impressive. If you think RE8 is anywhere near RE7 then Metroid Dread > MK8 is likely.

Of course, this wouldn't be the first time GotY poorly translates to contest performance, but regardless I suspect Dread is at least in the running for third strongest Metroid game.

So any predictions for GotY tomorrow? For me...

Metroid Dread finishes first with around 38% of the vote. I think the placement of Resident Evil Village will have the most variability. I have no faith in the games from the New Franchise poll. The vote total alone confirms the competition in that poll was really weak.

It's impossible to know without him saying one way or another so it will remain a conspiracy theory.

I just find it hard to believe FF14 and FF15 can get 5 seeds while FF13 is completely left out. At least with Mario you could argue that with so many options (NSMBU, 3DLand, 3DWorld) on top of Odyssey and Galaxy 2 being the clear preferred options that they could LFF each other out of a contest spot.

SBAllen had a hidden series limit of 2 games which effected Mario/Zelda/Final Fantasy from getting a third game (before anyone mentions it, Mario Kart is considered different from Mario). Even if they would have done a lot better.
