Yeah I don't think Ash has ever revealed his entire team without the three starters being there, though there is one scene that I remember that Ash had to go to the pokecenter to get Snivy so in theory they do get boxed.

Pidove gets hit worse, the anime even taunts you with other trainers using Pidove/Tranquils making people believe Ash will use it in the next episode.

There was a site that listed Pokemon episodes that removed filler episodes. So if a Pokemon was not caught, evolved, learned a new move or if Ash did not have a gym or an important battle or if no recurring trainer or Pokemon was seen or if it had nothing to do with a story/arc/background then the episode was removed.

Then I don't understand what you meant about your above comment.
I guess you could argue that in my hypothetical Snorlax could have taken out a third had he not been the last Pokemon standing, but we don't know because the opponent ran out of Pokemon, but at the same time you could argue that the next attack would knock it out. But being the last Pokemon standing doesn't mean your defense was the best it just means you are the last Pokemon left. That would be like saying Pokemon B had the best defense because it was undefeated and knocked out 1 Pokemon while Pokemon A went through 5 Pokemon and lost to the 6th.

But had Charizard knocked out 3 and fainted and Snorlax knocked out 2 and won it would be foolish to say Snorlax was better.

I don't think getting KO'd should matter. With the exception of very few battles Ash only has 1 Pokemon left and that's the one that KOs the final opponent's Pokemon. As a writing tool Snorlax doesn't fit the criteria of a final Pokemon (not the underdog or Ash's current main guy). As a comparison Palpitoad will be the same where he'll be one of Ash's strongest (he's the strongest right now IMO) but he won't be the last Pokemon standing too often. Overall had Infernape taken out 3 of Paul's Pokemon and then lost because of a fourth I would still give Infernape the same credit.
What Snorlax is used for is that he either gives Ash a lead to where his other Pokemon blow it or he draws Ash level after his other Pokemon let him down. You know every time Ash brought him out someone was about to get ripped. Top Charizard Pikachu Snorlax Sceptile Infernape Good Bulbasaur Squirtle Heracross Swellow Glalie Buizel Gliscor Average Kingler Tauros Bayleef Quilava Noctowl Donphan Corphish Staraptor Gible Bad Pidgeot Primeape Muk Lapras Totodile Aipom Torterra Bottom Butterfree Torkoal A lot harder than I thought. Yeah when I think of Sinnoh I think of Turtwig at the beginning, Buizel at the middle and Chimchar at the end in terms of strength. The others got neglected, but at least Buizel had a few decent matches while as soon as Turtwig evolved he never really had a good match.

Another thing. Cynthia is still Champion. So it means that Tobias lost to either her or one of the Elite Four. If a guy with Ubers can't beat the Elite Four, how is a regular trainer supposed to? Unless you decide to believe Tobias said "**** this" to the Champion League and simply left.

It lost horrifically to Kenny's Empoleon, did poorly against Paul at the lake and lost to Byron's Steelix as well, off the top of my head. It was in very poor form before the Paul battle
That's when he started losing his place as top guy and became a fall guy (Worf Effect even). The writers wrote themselves into a corner with Tobias. The guy defeated everyone with just Darkrai, the fact Ash defeated two of his Pokemon would be grounds for people to call BS on the battle. Anymore and suspension of disbelief would be gone. Now had Ash used a team of Heracross/Infernape/Snorlax/Sceptile/Charizard/Pikachu and could only defeat 2 of Tobias' Pokemon suspension of disbelief would also have been thrown out the window. The writers did their best to have Ash lose badly and still look respectable and have things believable. 4 of his Pokemon had experience with legendaries, Heracross is a perfect counter to Darkrai and Gible could be one of Ash's strongest Pokemon in the future now that it has Dracometer down and if it is ever used again.

I kind of wished Paul brought Ursaring into this battle, always been a big fan of him.
Torterra's fall from grace is pretty sad. In terms of his main Pokemon it is probably the worst besides Torkoal.
