Which game would they play? Dota2 is the most popular, but completely incomprehensible for the casual viewer. CSGO is easier to understand, but very politically incorrect. Rocket League is easy to grasp, but far from the most popular.

It's also a sport that no one on Earth cares about other than Americans and the Japanese. And even Americans have been losing interest in it over the last few decades.

Not that niche appeal is necessarily an argument against anything, considering they added snowboarding when the only people who did it were rich white American kids.

If you've got enough money and are willing to throw it at the IOC, you could probably get pretty much any event recognized.

Atlanta 96 was supposed to be the last time it was in the Olympics (because America kept winning gold) but it was brought back special for Tokyo 2020 at the behest of the Japanese Olympic Committee.

You forgot Koreans. Baseball is a huge sport there, and Koreans regularly make the top 3.(the 3 best teams are America, Japan, and South Korea)

Out of the last 5 times it was in the Olympics the US won 1 gold medal and 2 bronze medals. Cuba was the biggest baseball winners in the Olympics.

This is my biggest issue with the idea. "eSports" is a very, very broad concept, encompassing hundreds of possible games, many of which are so complex as to mean virtually nothing to viewers that don't already play them. Many of those games also already have global competitions, so adding them to the Olympics would accomplish very little except perhaps piquing the interest of the very tiny handful of people that might care about them, but don't already.

There wouldn't really be a need for subjective judging, unless we bring Minecraft to the Olympics (... I might watch that >.>). Pretty much any competitive game has scoring and/or victory conditions built right into it.

I knew it was something like that, I wasn't following Olympic baseball too closely with the exception of the 96 women's softball series when my cousin was playing, they placed fifth. (apparently she coached the team in '08, which shows I wasn't really paying that much attention)

Thats a bit exaggerated. Not what I meant. Like already made dlc alts that the IOC approves based on if they find it too sexualized

Sfv did have dlc content based around an official tournament though. Stages where 10 bucks. A single stage. Normally stages went for 3 bucks iirc.

But hey Olympic themed outfits would be cool. Like cammy have a gymnast outfit. Zangief a power lifter. And so on

I think it'd still work. Presumably, any sort of "e-lympics" would change which games were featured each time they happened based on what's popular at the time (I'd expect, if they're doing it every 4 years, they'd decide the games 2 years before each one). That would have the unfortunate effect of effectively forcibly retiring "e-thletes" whose game of choice fell out of vogue, so you wouldn't have the kind of consistent presence regular Olympians have, but that's not that unusual when a game stops being popular enough to attract viewers in the broader E-sports scene.

As far as I can tell Chess was included as an exhibition sport in the 2000 Summer games and that is the only time it has been at the Olympics. It is recognized as a sport by the IOC however, so it is eligible for inclusion and it was petitioned for Tokyo and is again being petitioned for inclusion in the 2024 games.

I am surprised Shogi wasn't included in the Olympic games.

Chess isn't an Olympic event, but the presiding organization that oversees chess is officially recognized by the IOC, so it's like the runner-up prize.

Arguably, people would be less pissy about eSports being recognized if it was treated the same way, rather than included as anything resembling an official event.

Conversely, the only other acceptible scenario is if they force everyone to play Super Mario Bros 3, and you have to use the Power Glove.
