It's not really a joke. If they're so sexually maladjusted as to rape their dementia-addled mother, I fully expect that they'll try something with any women they can while in jail, and given their... limited physical prowess, I don't see that ending well. If they're identifying female at all, that's a solid reason to put them in a women's prison (since trans women in men's prisons have an extremely high likelihood of being assaulted in some capacity), but because of their established history of sexual deviancy, I see that also posing some issues.

To clarify, I'm not in any way trying to suggest that there's an appreciable number of dudes identifying as women to get into women's prisons for some easy sexytime. This is specifically a commentary on Chris Chan's behaviour, largely independent of their gender identity.

In Canada, they don't even give a physical card. There's just an online account we can access with our provincial health card that contains the information, which is updated before we're done with the 15-minute waiting period. It's not particularly robust as proof of vaccination (it'd be very, very easy to edit a screenshot or printout to display a different name), but it is straightforward and convenient, as well as being very fast.

so wait, I just want to be clear on the asinine point y'all are getting at

Sexual Dimorphism in humans is not a thing and people born genetically male do not have a physical advantage over people born genetically female?

More accurately: Allowing trans people to compete as their target gender has been a thing for well over a decade now, and the fears about trans athletes "dominating the competition" don't seem to have come to fruition. The absolute worst example anyone can find relies on completely misrepresenting the facts of the case (an orbital fracture is no more "breaking her skull" than a broken nose would be), and even then, Fox didn't perform better than anyone else.

In theory, yeah, it's an issue. In practice, there hasn't been a real problem yet, despite plenty of opportunities. That means the most (really, only) sensible approach is to relax and let the cards fall where they will. Those making these decisions are keeping a careful eye on their ramifications, so if a problem does arise, they'll deal with it by adjusting the criteria (even now, there are requirements for hormone levels that have to be met, which can be tweaked very easily as needed). In the mean time, this fearmongering about having cis women pushed completely out of sports by trans women (mostly coming from people that couldn't have cared less about women's sports because they became an opportunity to dunk on trans people) is both baseless and pointless. Calm down.

Ultimately, the problem with making any decently secure system lies on the business end of things. A paper record is pretty much useless in that regard. Anyone can print out and sign a vaccination record themselves, and the restaurants or whatever that check them won't know the difference (since they won't be taking the time to contact the doctor that allegedly signed it). Even "scan a QR code and check it against a photo ID" is a lot more infrastructure than most businesses can be expected to develop for a relatively short-term need (though hypothetically, anyone with a phone could pull that off with an app, so that's probably the most reasonable approach).

Really, what's needed is a countrywide database of immunization statuses, an app for letting people access their data, and another app (or at least a function within the first app) to allow businesses to validate that data before letting people in. But that requires a cohesive plan from the government (which changed hands at the most critical time for developing such a thing), plus IT and government are never a good combination.

Depending on the roots of the issue, therapy/rehab, mostly. Obviously, you can't force that on people and there will inevitably be people that would rather refuse the help. Unfortunately, those are the ones that probably should just end up in jail for their belligerence, since there really isn't much more you can do with them except forcibly isolate them from society so they don't hurt anyone. That shouldn't, however, discourage efforts to help everyone else, any more than the ~5% of people that blatantly abuse welfare should be used to justify taking it away from everyone else.

Of course, saying that, Medicine Hat has pulled it off despite that apparent reality (I hate to keep bringing them up, but as one of the few areas that's actually tried this approach, their success is extremely relevant here). I don't know off-hand how they handle people that refuse help, but I guess they've found something that works, because they have succeeded.

Clearly you don't understand American healthcare. They would have made me bleed for days to "heal me". They actually just want thousands of dollars.

No, they would have told you to put some polysporin on it and keep it covered while it healed. Nobody would bother doing surgery or anything like that on a second-degree burn, especially one so small and far away from anything vital. had it been on your face or neck, they may have hospitalized you for observation to make sure it didn't swell up and interfere with your breathing, and if it had covered a significant portion of your body they would keep you around on a saline drip to monitor your vitals and ensure you stayed properly hydrated (widespread burns interfere with thermoregulation and water retention abilities), but that's about it.

What you're doing is only marginally less ridiculous than bragging about not going to the doctor for a paper cut. That was not an injury that would require medical attention for anyone. You're not remotely special for recovering from it without medical help, and being able to recover from a minor superficial injury indicates nothing about your ability to survive infection with a life-threatening disease.

Eeyup. Caitlyn Jenner's probably one of the most egregious examples of this: There are many people that claim to be pro-trans and whatnot, but will misgender Jenner (... misjenner >.>) because she's a bad person. That's just not how acceptance works. If you treat correctly gendering people as a privilege that can be revoked if they misbehave badly enough, you never actually accepted them and are not at all pro-trans. Jenner can be both a woman and a quasi-sentient skidmark masquerading as a human.

It's the same vein as only using the N-word to describe particularly poorly-behaved black people. If you ever think that using somebody's race as a basis for insulting them is okay, whatever the context, you're racist. Similarly, if you ever think that misgendering somebody to insult them is okay, you're transphobic.

Mostly because this hasn't been an issue before Covid. Before, the only instances where you'd need to produce proof of vaccination would be for certain jobs or schooling (and similar things), in which case you show it once and it gets added to your file. The notion of needing to carry it everywhere and present it to get into regular businesses is very much a new thing, and the existing system of doing things hasn't had a chance to catch up to that yet (especially where nobody planned for this because it was hoped that it wouldn't be necessary).

Very slightly, but hopefully that gains steam (though as I said in another topic, each additional vaccine offers augmenting returns over the previous one in terms of public protection, so even small improvements are more significant than they seem). Meanwhile, the surge in daily cases isn't showing any signs of levelling off yet, and deaths are starting to creep up to match it.

As a side note, it looks like case and death numbers are consistently dramatically lower (like 80-90%) on weekends than weekdays. The most obvious explanation is that the folks in charge of tallying them up aren't working, but I would have figured an issue this significant would warrant bringing on extra staff to have 24/7 coverage. Weird.

"In Iowa, which raises about one-third of the nations hogs, farmer Dwight Mogler estimates the changes would cost him $3 million and allow room for 250 pigs in a space that now holds 300."

Which, in turn, means the price of pork products can be expected to increase by ~20% to compensate for the lost production capacity. That's enough to cut down on the amount people are going to be buying, certainly, but it's hardly "California has no more bacon," and it's not such a prohibitive loss as to warrant cutting out California's market entirely.

The fact that so few pig farmers have hit the targets is less a matter of those targets being unattainable and more a matter of them deciding it was hard and hoping the law would be changed before coming into effect.

My usual approach is to set my alarm for an hour before I need to leave, then snooze it for half an hour and rush through breakfast and whatnot. Working from home, though, there's no commute to consider, so I'll leave it much later and typically eat breakfast at my desk.

by that definition a homeless person could claim some spot on the street as their "home" and would therefore no longer be homeless.

I mean, that is actually what RK is trying to do (by saying he's not homeless while having no fixed address and living in a tent/motel rooms), but no, that's not how it works. A homeless person can't actually "claim" a spot on the street. They can set up there and stay there, but they have no recognized claim to that spot until somebody with the authority to do so actually says "this is yours" (generally with conditions, such as a lease). That's what's meant by "permanent": Having an explicitly defined right to be there.
