I had no idea that dying in missions affects your overall progress in the games. I'm stuck back at the base having to fight this monkey repload and can't get out of the fight until I beat him.

If you are playing the Zero-ZX Legacy Collection, then turn on the "Save-assist" feature in the menu before play the game. Trust me, this help a lot.

Yeah if you're new to the games, this is a good way to play them. You get to see the story and all the levels and bosses, and dying isn't overly punishing.

I don't like how your grade decreases for using those fairies or whatever they are. Do the other games do that as well?

I can't think of any examples, but it's basically a matter of giving you more points for playing the game on a harder difficulty. That's not an unusual approach.

I get that, but the fairies are a fairly large part of the game so having to ignore all of it makes it feel emptier. In general I prefer when higher difficulties make the enemies stronger and smarter rather than restricting the player a lot.

Edit: I looked them up and they're called Cyber Elves, not fairies lol

In 1 and 2, yes. IIRC 3 and 4 became a lot more lax on that.
I always thought it was dumb in 2 how to get the special attacks you basically had to play the game flawlessly. And if you were that good at the game, you didn't even need them.

I really hate it when games lock you out of content, especially just based on your performance and not actual choices/decisions. That's one little thing I like about Kingdom Hearts games; nothing is ever missable, barring an occasional glitch.

It's because you essentially kill the elves to power up Zero.

It's been a long time since I played them, but I think the elf restriction might be lifted in later games, and they become equips instead of consumables.

Again, it's been years, so I could be wrong.

Yeah with 3 and 4 they basically realized that lifting some of the restrictions made for better games. Punishing the player for using things the game gives them was dumb.

That's good to hear. I bought the Zero Collection some time ago and shelved it because I didn't really like the first game overall, but it sounds like the later games get better. I don't want to play them out of order so I'll just push through.

Also the opening stage theme in 2 is amazing

IMO Mega Man Zero 3 is right up there with Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X as one of the best games in the entire series.

I feel that. There were some that just straight up made the game easier (like the one that made every spike in the game disappear), and penalizing the player for using those makes sense, but the ones that gave smaller stat boosts were a way to customize the character, and taking them away meant "optimal" play was exactly the same experience for everybody.

That's one of the reasons (the main one being that I'm just not good enough, but we'll ignore that) I never pushed into really high Heat in Hades. At the higher Heat levels, you no longer get to choose most of the things that really define a build, which takes out a lot of what makes Roguelites fun to play in the first place (to say nothing of dramatically increasing the chance of getting RNG screwed).
