Which, in turn, means the price of pork products can be expected to increase by ~20% to compensate for the lost production capacity. That's enough to cut down on the amount people are going to be buying, certainly, but it's hardly "California has no more bacon," and it's not such a prohibitive loss as to warrant cutting out California's market entirely.

The fact that so few pig farmers have hit the targets is less a matter of those targets being unattainable and more a matter of them deciding it was hard and hoping the law would be changed before coming into effect.

No it means he can't afford it.

"In Iowa, which raises about one-third of the nations hogs, farmer Dwight Mogler estimates the changes would cost him $3 million and allow room for 250 pigs in a space that now holds 300."
And? This doesn't refute what I've said.

If this farmer's production is expected to drop by 16%, we would expect prices to rise by the same amount to cover the costs, plus more to deal with the initial overhead costs of renovating part or all of the farm. The initial article suggests pork prices in California will rise up to 60% - more than enough to cover it.

Again, this isn't difficult - the people wanted hogs to be treated more ethically and they're going to get it. It will cost more, but that is something California voters are apparently willing to accept as a price for more ethical meat. Honestly? Good for them.

Heck, given how heavily meat is already subsidized in America, I won't be surprised if further subsidies are added to help offset the increased costs (or at least to help farmers become compliant with the new rules).

I find the best argument for not eating meat is to watch the texas chainsaw massacre and put yourself in the position of the victims of leatherface and co. Obviously, if my place was swapped with a slaughterpig, I would not want to be slaughtered. Right? So if you like the idea of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you, then you should obviously not eat meat. So bacon is bad. It's delicious, but bad. I'm sure Leatherface thinks people taste great. So we're Leatherface. Great.

they absolutely would. pigs can and will eat any part of a human except hair/toenails/fingernails/teeth.
and that's just because they can't digest those parts.

Pretty sure no pig has ever set up a human farm where humans are raised in tiny crates too small for them to even turn around in.

I'd like to point out that the cramped quarters we keep livestock in help facilitate the spread and mutation of diseases that transfer to humans. With all the health problems the meat industry causes, cutting into their profits by forcing them to stop squeezing so many animals into such little space might actually save us all money overall.

Anyway, just something to think about since most people don't give af about abusing animals so long as that abuse isn't sexual.

So, we are doing onto others as they do onto us

The issue here is not merely eating the animals, but rather raising them in horrible, torturous conditions. Unfortunately, it's simply not possible to meet the US' demand for meat without resorting to such practices, so enforcing improvements in animal welfare is going to require people to eat less meat. In truth, that's generally a good thing, both nutritionally and ethically.

Generally, because torturing animals for profit and convenience isn't a great precedent.

Maybe. But Id honestly rather not eat less meat than I do if I can help it

That said, my original quote was responding to the person that was mainly talking about its bad to eat then because then we are leatherface

On a somewhat related note, I find it interesting that some would judge other cultures/regions for eating the "wrong" type of animal but sees nothing wrong with their own culture should the situation ever be reversed.

Pig in general is healthier than other meat like chicken if you don't eat things like sausage or bacon.

Ehhhh

The actions of society as a whole indicate that we give absolutely zero fucks about the welfare of animals in general

People deliberately to overlook it, but even the smallest, dumbest pest or farm animals can display genuine sorrow and anguish when kept in horrible conditions, which we do on an unprecedented scale

Even when kept in pleasant conditions, these animals are killed for food at the ripe old age of "just finished puberty".
