It's maybe a week too early, but I'm bored at work so I'm going to look through upcoming Winter 2024 anime. As always, I'm skipping sequels and starting with the shows that have the least members.

Yuuki Bakuhatsu Bang Bravern - this show has no available info on MAL. The poster looks generic.

Snack Basue - some girls run a restaurant called Snack Bus, which is presumably an actual bus but maybe not, description isn't clear. If I'm real desperate for stuff to watch I might check this out if it's a comedy, but not if the focus is boring food porn.

Delusional Monthly Magazine - a workplace anime about a magazine focused on outlandish things. The setting is a place called Most City, which might be the worst name for a city that I've ever seen. It doesnt inspire any confidence that the rest of the show will be even remotely creative when it comes to these so-called outlandish things.

Chou Futsuu Ken Chiba Densetsu - No info on MAL, but it's related to a 5.6/10 OVA that says it's about girls and creatures. Not enough info to go on. The poster looks fun, at least.

Isekai no Yu - this has a comically long title that I refuse to type out. Bottom line, it's an isekai about a hot spring enthusiast finding hot springs. I'm not going to watch it.

The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids - a super good tank gets kicked out of the heroes party, but then the tank learns he's actually even more of a super tank than he'd ever realized and he doesn't need no stinking hero to help him raid. I give this points for at least not being an isekai. Then it loses those same points by still using RPG terminology like how he's a level 9999 tank.

Sasaki and Peeps - a depressed worker drone adopts a bird to cheer himself up, but the bird turns out to be a sage who gives him the power to travel between worlds. I'm tentatively interested in this because I'm a fan of the general concept of moving between the real world and a fantasy world.

Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard - ugh, I hate this incel trope so much. Main dude is a turbo-loser who can't get the sex, so reality took pity and gave him a mind reading ability. Then he learns a male coworker is lusting after him. I guess this might be good for people who like boys love anime. I don't, and I couldn't get past the premise even if I did like the genre.

Pon no Michi - A girl gets kicked out of her home and, instead of worrying about shelter or where she'll sleep, she's worried about not having a place to hang out with her friends. Luckily her father has an abandoned parlor she can fix up as a new hangout spot. The description doesn't say what this parlor is, exactly. Is it a former gambling parlor? Is she renovating an opium den? I need more information.

Sengoku Youko - In a world of humans and monsters, one monster protects humans while her mostly-human brother hates humans for some reason. They uncover a plot involving experiments to turn humans into monsters, which I guess offends both of them enough to team up. This could either be decent or terrible, but I'm a sucker for monster girls so I'll at least check this out.

The Demon Prince of Momochi House - an orphan inherits a house which turns out to exist on the border between realities, and she has some interesting squatters. One is a guy tasked with defending the house while being cursed to never leave it, so the girl starts helping him out. This sounds like a setup for a nice supernatural-flavored romance. I'm actually pretty excited for it!

'Tis Time for "Torture," Princess - a princess is scheduled to be executed by a demon lord's unique kind of torture. Given the goofy poster and the 'gourmet' tag on MAL, I'm guessing he's going to feed her delicious food for some reason. I usually hate food porn shows, so I'll probably skip this.

I've kept an eye out for Nanoha since I started watching anime, but sadly it isnt streaming anywhere. Maybe someday!

I care about behemoths! I used a big behemoth in one of my stacks in WoFF

I might give it another chance at some point. There is clearly more depth to the characters than what they started with. I know not to judge an entire series off of one episode. I just have a super low tolerance for the kind of cringe moments that were in that first episode. Main girl's inability to take a hint, coupled with everyone else refusing to explain anything and then getting angry when she inevitably failed, was a bad combination. I already work a crappy job, I don't want to watch one in fiction! I also already have people here thinking I'm anti-yuri (even though nothing could be further from the truth). I should probably stop here rather than watching Yuri is my Job and then ranting about it later. I was honestly just expecting the typical "cute girls work in a cafe with light yuri teasing" show based on the description, like Is the Order a Rabbit except gayer. I didn't want a drama!

On the plus side regarding yuri, there's a one-episode OVA on Crunchyroll called Kase-san and the Morning Glories. The description says the two girls are already dating, and neither one looks like a horrible person. It's too late to watch it now, but I will tomorrow night! Hopefully this will finally be a yuri anime I can enjoy, even if only for one hour-long episode.

I haven't watched Madoka in forever, but wasn't it relatively low on yuri-baiting compared to similar shows? (Yuki and Togo from Yuki Yuna is a Hero are way more in love, for example). I remember Sayaka's whole subplot involved her love for a dude. Seems like a weird reason for the fandom to turn on a seemingly popular spinoff!

Romance seems like a difficult genre to be a fan of if toxic elements turn you off. That's like, the point of 3/4 of romance media.

As my big anime ranking project last year showed, romance is a love/hate genre for me. It can get incredibly bad. When it's good, though, it's the best! I don't mind suffering through the multitude of stinkers to find the occasional gem. Something has to fill out the lower tiers in my anime ranking, after all.

I also don't want to make it sound like romance anime needs to be all light and fluffy with zero drama. I just despise certain kinds of drama. I feel like a lot of stories use tropes like contrived misunderstandings that could be solved with a ten second conversation as a crutch. There's still a lot of potential for growth and conflict between two good people who are doing their best, and I find that kind of story far more rewarding.

I've been slowly making my way through Mushishi and liking it well enough. I'll keep Otherside Picnic in mind!

Blue Drop doesn't appear to be streaming anywhere, but I'll keep an eye out for it if that ever changes.

What were the three you hated and the one you were lukewarm on?

The three I hated from worst to least worst are Citrus (chock full of really uncomfortable plot elements), I'm in Love With the Villainess (because of what I've been ranting about, but even before that I found both main characters kind of insufferable), and the third is Adachi and Shimamura (mostly because Adachi had no personality beyond her obsession with Shimamura, and Shimamura had no personality at all).

The one I'm meh on is The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady. It didn't have anything overtly offensive, and the two mains were actual characters. The story itself didn't really resonate with me, but it's still the best even if only by default.

And before anyone goes thinking I simply don't like yuri romance again, I can easily name four straight romance anime that I hate even more than Citrus (100 Girlfriends, Science Fell in Love, My Little Monster, Maria the Virgin Witch).

That's not an insult, that's a totally justifiable preference. I like Snow-white with Red Hair!

That's probably a fair assessment. I hate stuff like forced misunderstandings or romantic rivals. There's still plenty of room for conflict in a romance even without those things, though! The girls in Highway Blossoms had plenty of hurdles to jump over, but those issues were inherent to their characters and things they needed to figure out about each other and themselves. It wasnt just the author pressing the drama button over and over.

I hate three of the four I've seen (and I'm not a huge fan of the fourth one either) but I'm a big fan of yuri in general. Highway Blossoms is my favorite visual novel and it's yuri all the way. I keep hoping to find a yuri anime with well-written characters and no awful implications or sexual assaults. So far I've been disappointed every single time.

This isn't limited to yuri, either! I hate a ton of straight anime romances too. Every so often, though, there's a good one like Insomniacs After School or Snow White With the Red Hair. I think it's a numbers game. I've watched dozens of straight anime romances and only found a handful of good ones, but those good ones are some of my all-time favorites. If I keep watching yuri anime, someday I'll find a great one.

I would argue that 'Death of the Author' would come into play here too. It almost doesn't matter what the author intended or personally believes. I interpreted this message from their work, and I know I wasn't the only one because there's a guy on the anime board calling me a bigot for not wholeheartedly supporting incest.

This isn't something like The Sopranos where we're supposed to recognize and examine the hypocrisies of flawed characters. The message in the Villainess anime was pretty blatant and presented sympathetically.

Ugh, the way AI is slowly replacing humans in the creative world always makes me sad.

I like the idea of 24 hour rounds. I still think the daily kill allotment should be the same as the number of kills required (so if two kills equals dead, we each get two kills per day). I don't want to kill only 50% of Jecht in a day, you have to let me kill 50% of Cid H too to make up for it!

I'd definitely prefer a kill per calendar day rather than exactly 24 hours but I don't know if that would be easy to program and time zones would probably make a mess of it for most people anyway

I'd vote for a mix of A and B. Either two or three to kill (preventing one person from sniping anything, assuming you also ban trading), but then also give everyone either two or three kills per day to keep it the same length. Maybe every 12 hours, but I wouldn't like it any quicker than that.

Damn, I also thought this subgenre was based on a real thing from dating sims! That's interesting to know. I guess I should do the All Routes Lead to Doom one soon and see how the idea began.

Eh, it looks fine as a generic anime. Probably not worthy of a big announcement though.

I was actually browsing upcoming Winter 2024 shows the other day and saw one called Metallic Rouge. The description for it just says "Metallic Rouge is an original action sci-fi TV anime commemorating the 25th anniversary of studio Bones". You'd think they'd be hyping this up a bit more, maybe actually reveal a few plot details...

I'll most likely never watch the Scott Pilgrim anime (the movie wasn't bad but I don't like Scott as a character at all). However, I was curious why it wasnt being listed on MAL so I looked into it. I guess the people in charge of the database over there are ignoring their own criteria in order to exclude it, lol. Even though their main argument, that this wasn't being made with a Japanese audience in mind, would apply to anime like Cyberpunk Edgerunners too. I understand why a show like Castlevania isn't on there, but I think this Scott Pilgrim anime should be.

Another bump, a little more than one day left!

Only one I've even played was BG3 and I couldn't get into it. I didn't like how much it was built around save-scumming.

Looking at MAL, isn't Mappa only doing one show this season? That doesn't feel like it would be enough to burn everyone out. I don't know anything about the industry, though.

Since no one mentioned a problem with the date, the next async is next Saturday, November 18th! I figure it's probably better to do it the week before US Thanksgiving because people might still be busy with family the weekend after (I dunno, I'm Canadian).

I heard Bloom Into You didn't have a good ending in the anime, like apparently it just trails off in the middle of an arc or something. I'll watch it someday but I'm still kind if hoping it gets another season.
