I never thought I'd see the day.

Ok caught up on Apothecary Diaries now and this show is very good. Might even be passing Frieren for me, though it's hard to say since they're pretty different types of shows.

Kind of wish I'd waited to watch it though since it seems like it might be the type of show that's better to watch all at once instead of week-to-week.

Big controversy apparently with that new Naruto game where they redid almost all the VA, and some people are suspecting either uncredited replacements or even AI replacements. Naruto's VA reacted to one of the clips and straight up said he absolutely never recorded a take like that ever.

Naruto's VA also said it wasn't AI, rather that it's edited versions of existing clips.

To clarify, it's not the entire recording like this, otherwise this would have obviously already exploded, plenty of VA was actually redone with the originals. It's just bits and pieces here and there.

However, the VA that was re-recorded legitimately is also pretty much all worse because supposedly there was no voice direction at all.

I'm really not sure why it needed to be re-recorded in the first place if this game is almost all a rehash of earlier games? I thought it was just a big compilation thing??

Finished Blue Eye Samurai

Absolutely fantastic series. Just need to know going in that it is very much season 1 of a show intended to have multiple seasons.

My only real problem is I was very turned off by the licensed music choice, but this only happened briefly a couple of times, and is more a matter of personal preference.

After it came up in a recent discussion here, I watched Otherside Picnic. It definitely wasn't the greatest adaptation. I don't know anything about the source material and even I could tell they were swapping events around for no reason (the item you girls are using disintegrated a few episodes ago how are you using it). The animation quality was often dubious, especially in distance shots. It also didn't scratch my yuri romance itch. There were definite signs, and maybe they'll get there someday, but sadly not in what the anime covered.

Other than those problems, though, I enjoyed it! I'm a sucker for a weird setting like this. At times it felt like a mix between an SCP article and the movie Annihilation. I would've preferred if they were a bit more methodical, covering stuff like gathering supplies and mapping the weird world out or something. As it was, they just kind of wandered in a few times and stumbled into spooky adventures. Still, that was fun in it's own way! Toriko and Sorawo were great partners in crime.

Nothing about the Strawhat's story or look appeals to me in this arc in the slightest, but I may come back to the anime for real for the first time in like a decade to watch all the side story stuff we get during this, because that's been top notch content.

Despite it having a title so long as to be a parody, I'm really enjoying "The Executed Sage Is Reincarnated As A Lich And Starts An All-Out War" so far. And notabley, it's in no way an Isekai!

If you're one of the many people who used to like Overlord but got tired ofbir annoyed by it, worth checking out.

I read some of the manga and bounced off it much like Overlord. Think I'm just not into stories where the main character is genuinely the bad guy and kills lots of innocent people. Anti-hero? Great. Misunderstood hero? Even better. Ruthless-for-questionable reasons protagonist? I think that can work great if it's built up to over time as character degradation, but otherwise...

Overlord to me just reveled in it's cruelty too much after a certain point. The arc where the adventures sneak into his castle (or something like that) just really, really got me super angry. I could definitely see this going down this path eventually, but the character here aiming for peace and his own defeat even if he's unquestionably a self admitted villainous monster does have me interested

With Overlord they're actively seeking world domination for the sake of it, which can be fun too, but it falls apart when you don't actually want the main character to succeed anymore and I feel like that's where Overlord got.

Something like Tanya the Evil is surprisingly not even that evil, since she's mostly just fairly ruthless in a war, rather than going beyond the pale.

Overlord basically just constantly gets worse after S1.

That first chunk of S2 was really good when it was just an entirely different show!

Well yeah, that's the good parts of the post-S1 content - it's basically good whenever it's not focusing on Nazarick and bad otherwise.

Partly because the final arc of S1 (Ainz vs. Shalltear) is the last time there were actual stakes for Ainz...

Have been periodically thinking about my Top 10 anime over the last week due to recent series, having not really taken a crack at it for a long time. Wanted to allow recency bias to fade, and the unlikelihood that 2 anime I only just saw could make the cut simmer, though I havent cooled on either so fuck it.

I've narrowed it down to 23 in no particular order. Some of these I already know wont be making it in the middle of typing them out but I figure its best to be thorough.

Ive tended to have a bias excluding comedies and long running Shounen series too, which Ive tried to nip in the bud.

Ive also swung extremely hard to the side of the political spectrum that anime is an aesthetic and doesnt have to be primarily from Japan, which of course changes things up a bit. If someone who has never seen anime asked for recommendations, and you could reasonably recommend a series as a response to that question, it counts.

I dont usually include movies, something like KnK is an exception because its such long, continuous series.

I am actually surprised by the number of series I have comfortably excluded from contention.

I had considered adding RWBY here, and I certainly do love it, but the only way it climbs this high is by letting the obscene amount of fanfiction Ive read cloud my judgment. And boy is that amount high.

And there may be something obvious I'm just forgetting. I intentionally did not like at my decade old Anilist account.

I'm always interested in top 10s (and anime rankings in general) so definitely post the list if you narrow it down! I've only seen fifteen of the contenders and they range from some that I hated to some that I loved. A Place Further than the Universe is my favorite from among them.

You shouldn't worry too much about recency bias, either. I've had two new anime enter my personal top 10 so far this year (Dark Gathering and Insomniacs After School). Sometimes that's just how it goes. While I've definitely cooled on some shows a little bit after watching them, it's never happened with one I truly loved. Something resonating hard enough to even be a top 10 contender usually isn't a feeling that goes away!

Anyway, today I continued my "villainess" trend and watched The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior. I didn't like it as much as Endo and Kobayashi, but it was still a solid anime. The setting was decent with all the different magic abilities, and Pride was a good character trying to do her best. My biggest complaint was that she acted like it was inevitable that she would eventually turn into an evil queen and need to be killed. It'd be one thing if she was shown constantly struggling against her inherent evil nature or something, but she was fully in control of herself at all times with no sign of nefarious influence. She was also a total sweetheart who always tried to do the right thing. Why are you still assuming there will be a bad end? Other than that minor conceptual problem, I enjoyed this.

This is an issue with the villainess isekai genre as a whole (I've read far too many of them). Lots of protagonists stay laser-focused on the plot being fate/unavoidable even when that's clearly not the case and they've derailed canon so badly it's in another hemisphere by now.

The most frustrating stories are the ones where they turn out to be right, though. Like the world nonsensically adjusting itself to get back on track.

Man, that sounds like it would be really frustrating. Then again, I don't mind how it is in Tearmoon Empire where she fixes one problem but then a completely different problem leads to a similar end. I guess it depends on how it's handled.

Tearmoon is a fun series and I didn't have any problems with the way it handled things. When I say nonsensical, I'm talking like 'random heart attacks on people whose death was prevented' or just straight-up mind control.

I narrowed it down to my unordered Top 11 after some legit and pedantic arguments with myself in my head, and I refuse to cut any more so I guess I'm pulling a Nostalgia Critic here.

Yor-centric Spy x Family arc seriously so good!!

Dragon Goes House-Hunting isn't amazing or anything, but they successful pulled off a Metal Gear Solid Cardboard Box reference...I'm on board.

Finished it, and it stayed pretty funny, despite not being great or anything. It was a different spin on D&D fantasy and isekai (stats) worlds, while poking fun at itself and doing enough weird real estate stuff to differentiate it.

Everyone in the know already knew Science Saru was a God tier studio, but they're finally going to be put on the map.

Just found out that Mami Tomoe's Everyday Life, what I thought was a cancelled manga after a few chapters that I read ages ago, is actually an enormously successful ongoing manga that's still going strong after a decade, and the reason it's got no presence here is everyone who would translate it just hates it too much to bother??

I mean it starts with all the girls but Mami married to dudes, including Homura being married to Madoka's baby brother, so I can see why it would be essentially blacklisted from scanlations I guess lol.

4 chapters got translated in and not a sole has touched it since, and volume 10 looks to have come out in Japan in October.

Justice is served, I suppose.

I remember Sayaka's whole subplot involved her love for a dude. Seems like a weird reason for the fandom to turn on a seemingly popular spinoff!

Madoka fans deserve to suffer as much as the girls in the anime

It leaned in harder on it at the end, and of course in the movie, but up until that point it would be hard to even say there was very much hinting at yuri. The Madoka Fandom in general is pretty laser focused on the last 3 episodes and beyond though, so a combination of that and marketing since then has caused Madoka to be seen as and become much more sapphic than it originally was.

When a show has a total of 4 male characters, including a dad, a baby, an evil transdimensional monster dog rabbit cat, and an unrequited love interest specifically designed to cause conflict, the writing is on the wall.
