Yeah... no. I'd say definitely not.

There's yet to be a traditional black female playable character in the entire franchise.

comparison sazh black ff13 obviously giving a lot of topics about his race. if fang was considered black, people would be talking about it

I went back to check to make sure votals were accurate just in case and discovered I did not vote in a match Barret lost by a single vote. I could've sworn I did nearly as soon as I saw the topic so I have no idea what happened.

If it makes you feel any better, I made a similar blunder earlier in this contest that I wasn't going to say anything about, but what the hell, why not.

In the Yuffie/Zidane match, I accidentally voted for Yuffie, when I fully intended to vote for Zidane. I don't know what happened, and didn't even notice it until hours later. Like it was just a complete mental brain fart where I selected the wrong name by accident. Yuffie ended up winning 20-18, so it would've been tied, all else being equal, had I not made that blunder. Whoops. Sorry Zidane!

The worse part about all this is I made a similar mistake when I hosted the Disney music contest. I accidentally saved Be Prepared over Belle when I intended to save Belle, and of couse, the match was decided by a single vote (Belle lost).

As the host, I should be better with this, and the fact that the mistake actually mattered the only two times I ever did it is bizarre.

Haha that does make me feel slightly less dumb, I suppose. Still brutal way for Barret to get eliminated one match away from the finals.

I think my personal dumbest ever contest flub was accidentally saving in the wrong save my. I can't remember specifics, but there were two contests going on that had the same character in it and they both were like in the top ten or something. I was one of the final saves of the round, and I saved the character I wanted to in one topic (I thought) but what I had actually done was saved them in the second topic and eliminated the character I had been saving all along. I forget which two contests it was and I forget which character it was, but it was a brutal way to end things.

Day 36 Results:

(11) Kefka Palazzo (FFVI) --VS-- (10) Auron (FFX) - 24-21
Auron steamrolled his way through the competition, but in a somewhat surprising upset, is defeated by Kefka in what was a neck-and-neck battle from beginning to end. While Auron was supposed to be an untalkative type, his role as a mentor and guide resulted in the second-greatest number of lines of dialogue after Tidus. As his mouth is covered, Auron's voice doesn't need to match mouth movements, giving him slightly more freedom in his delivery compared to most characters.

(13) Cloud Strife (FFVII) --VS-- (11) Kefka Palazzo (FFVI) - 19-23
There will be no storybook ending today, as the villain has prevailed. Kefka is our SMFFFC 25th Anniversary Tournament champion, defeating Cloud in a matchup where he trailed early, but finished on a 14-3 run to claim the victory. Kefka was definitely the under-the-radar character of the contest, silently making his way through the tournament while powerhouses like Auron and Cloud, and underdogs like Barret and Rikku, got all the attention. But he was always there, plotting and scheming, tricking and conniving.

So how did Kefka slither his way through the bracket? Well, after cruising through the first few rounds, he used an enchantment spell on Yuffie and Vanille to seduce them into doing his dirty work, eliminating his most imminent threats in (6) Zidane and (3) Squall. Once the ladies did their job, Kefka swiftly eliminated them like the backstabbing scoundrel he is. His most shocking victory followed when he sent Auron back to the Farplane. How he won that match, I still do not know, but it undoubtedly involved some sort of treacherous trickery. When the dust settled, all that was left in his way was our spiky-haired protagonist. The face of the franchise. Cloud Strife..Kefka wasnt impressed, and cast Heartless Angel on Cloud to bring him to his knees and claim the victory.

Kefkas win shouldnt be too big of a surprise. He is coming off a recent stretch of 4 straight top 10 finishes, culminating in a championship in contest XXIII. While he has dealt with the all-too-common dip in stats since the win, its clear that he still has a very dedicated fanbase amongst Board 8s ranks.

Well, thats a wrap! Thanks everyone for participating. I know how sacred SMFFFC is around here, so I tried to do this contest right by those standards. I had a lot of fun hosting it, and I hope you all enjoyed participating in it.

This also doesnt have to be the end of the 25th Anniversary celebrations. I most certainly am not trying to claim a monopoly on it and encourage everyone to keep the party going if theyd like.

Very nice. Like I expected, there was a pretty big chunk of characters all kinda similar in strength near the top. Though there were a few discrepancies. I didn't expect Yuna, Barret and Terra to be part of that group, and I didn't expect Zidane not to be. Sazh is also borderline there.

I wonder if this influences saves next year. Like, it makes a victory for Terra/Barret/Tifa/Aeris/Yuna/Rikku (and maybe Sazh) look very likely if at least one of them manages to make it, while fans of other characters who make deep runs will want to face each other and avoid those powerhouses.

Aerith kept her finals vs Kefka closer than Cloud did in this, Aerith > Cloud confirmed (don't mind my eternal cope)

well-deserved by Kefka, certainly by beating Auron who was the defacto #1 it would've been a shocker if Cloud won. maybe a little bit of luck in bracket placement & outcomes as pointed out in the writeup, I wonder if Squall would've won a matchup vs. Kefka. It is pretty funny that Cloud beat all three FFX ladies in a row & pretty close to Tidus semifinals and Auron finals too for a potential 5-straight, that would've been something.

Thanks for running this guffguy - was a lot of fun!

I definitely think it gave a snapshot of some non-champions that could potentially make or even win a final with enough support. People like Barret and Rikku and so forth. Yuna, I think, was maybe the biggest surprise because she doesn't really have anyone maining her in SMFFFC right now, and really hasn't in a while, yet she did very well in this tournament. She might be someone who could make a deeper run if she just picked up a couple backers.

It is kinda funny how even Lightning didn't do very well in this (we all knew Fang wouldn't). Though she beat Ramza pretty handily, who beat Aeris in actual SMFFFC... kind of an odd discrepancy. And then Vanille has a similar discrepancy the other way through Locke and Auron.

I take solace in knowing that Tidus beat Kefka in a final (almost 10 years ago) (good lord it's been almost 10 years)

Kefka doesn't really have many haters, so it makes sense. I imagine Auron and even Cloud caught some anti-votes, Auron for being the favorite and Cloud for being the "face of the franchise." People love an underdog... even if it's not really an underdog.

Biggest surprise was probably Vivi getting bounced so early

edit: wait I had Tifa > Vivi in my bracket whoops
biggest surprise was Yuna > Tifa then

Fun contest.

I was very pleasantly surprised at Barret and Yuna doing so well. My favorites definitely over performed my expectations.

And I can find some amusement in jokingly being mad at Cloud for killing (almost) all of them and once again stopping Barret from being last 7 standing.

Yuna, I think, was maybe the biggest surprise because she doesn't really have anyone maining her in SMFFFC right now, and really hasn't in a while
I already said after the contest that I'm going to main her next year and was looking for a push to get behind her. I know there was talk of pushing her and Rikku as a sisters alliance.

Kefka's popularity comes from the original SNES translation. He wasn't nearly as well-liked in Japan, and I believe GBA and later versions used a more accurate translation.

So speaking of continuing the 25th Anniversary festivities, I have an idea brewing on what to do next, and thought it could be fun to do a Kill My Favorite Final Fantasy Character contest. The rules would be simple. There would be a single round where every character to ever appear in an SMFFFC contest would be included (248, if my count is correct). Then people would vote for a character to kill, one at a time, which would eliminate them from the list. Last character standing wins. To elongate it a little bit (since it is essentially just one big round), each user would be able to make only one kill every 24 hours, which would mean it would take about a week to complete, assuming participation is roughly the same as this contest was. If thats something people would be interested in, let me know, and I might try to put something together, with an estimated starting date being sometime after Thanksgiving.

I've done Kill My Top Character Battlers where I stuffed in the 40 best performing characters from gamefaqs contests

actually ran it like a Save My - 39 rounds 1 elim each, so essentially day 1 the least-hated survives (Leon Kennedy), and the end of the contest pool is the most disliked characters who consistently failed to survive each day of the Kill Me - in that case it was Sora > Vincent > Crono > L-Block > Draven
