Hyped this up as a big announcement.....

Why not? This is better than most of what Bones has been doing for the past decade.

I've done 4 episodes so far of Scott Pilgrim and I've been going back to rewatch each episode dubbed right after to keep the comparison as direct as possible. I'm not going to do that anymore because I just can't take it. From a personal standpoint I think this is my most hated anime dub of all time.

And now I have finished it.

It is completely impossible for me to look at this objectively, because my heart is screaming that this is my favorite anime of all time but that's probably not true.

But wow I am just absolutely amazed by what I just watched. I feel like I did when I was back in Highschool and discovering this series 5 books in, buying and reading them all back to back. Maybe even that day I played hookey with my friend to wait out in front of the store for Dr No's to open so I could pick up my copy of Volume 6.

I finished Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte. I skipped it earlier this year because it seemed like it would be an examination of a typical villainess story. It's about two people in the real world commentating on a visual novel, after all, and then their voices magically start influencing people inside the game. I'd never really watched a villainess anime before despite how many there are now, so I was worried I wouldn't appreciate the subversive premise. Since I've been watching the currently airing "I'm in Love with the Villainess", though, I finally felt comfortable going back to this one.

I'm glad I watched this, too, because it was really good! All of the characters were great individually, each with a lot of depth and development. More importantly, it was also easy to get invested in their relationships with each other. Endo and Kobayashi were a lot of fun together, but so were Sieg and Lieselotte. The tsundere villainess herself managed to be endearing (rather than annoying, which is one of my big problems with the currently airing "I'm in Love with the Villainess"... like, I could actually see why people might actually like Lieselotte). The anime had a lot of cute moments between the various couples. It also managed to build a compelling story about the threat of a "Bad End" to the game that the commentators desperately wanted to avoid. I really loved all of those meta aspects to the story.

Overall, this was a great anime. It makes me want to go back and watch a few more of those other Villainess shows from the last few years. There are just so many choices! "My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!", "I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss", "The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior"... I'm sure the list goes on.

Yeah I quite enjoyed Endo & Kobayashi. Fun characters and good pacing. Was neat for it to be a complete adaptation too, which is pretty uncommon for anime.

Fun fact: there's no such thing as a "typical villainess story". Otome games generally don't have villainesses. The villainess isekai genre is a parody of something that doesn't exist.

Anime-wise it really doesn't! There's only been like 5 or 6 villainess anime so far, depending on whether you include something like Tearmoon. All Routes Lead to Doom and Heretical Last Boss Queen were both pretty fun imo.

Yeah the Villainess Isekai is a fairly event trend. All Routes Lead to Doom really Kickstarted everything with it's explosive popularity, to the point where I still have trouble calling it that because we used to just be able to call it "The Villainess Anime".

I'll blame Bakarina for that one. It was taking inspiration from the Kenkyo, Kenjitsu web novel, which was about reincarnation into a rival character in a shoujo romance manga. Bakarina, I guess, wanted to combine that with the standard fantasy isekai stuff, and that's where the fantasy otome game villainess subgenre came in. So it always existed as a hodgepodge of two already popular premises.

Probably about as much as MMORPGs have obscure sidequests with busted character upgrades as rewards to the first person to complete them.

Point taken, but at least these "otome games" are single-player games, and I think having a loathsome rival character that eats shit in the end could make the game more fun.

I never expected HxH to finish anyways with his back having been so bad its the public reason stated at least for why HxH was always on hiatus. This makes it sound like hes gonna be dead from some kind of cancer or something else major.

Does Gon even have a love interest for his family line to continue? I dont remember any of the HxH main characters having any so probably not even after where the anime covers Id assume?

Gon has been on screen for like one page after where the anime ends.

There's nothing even resembling a love interest besides Hisoka.

Im not surprised. Jump manga in general either get canceled or have a terrible ending anyways. Of all the ones I read maybe 1-2 didnt have either of those.

With how often it's been running, this has been obvious for a long time. He already considers the material at the finale of the anime to be an "ending" already. And I think one that actually works well considering what an unfinished series can look like.

I imagine if he gets to the end of this arc it'll feel the same, even if he has more scenarios planned.

Damn, I also thought this subgenre was based on a real thing from dating sims! That's interesting to know. I guess I should do the All Routes Lead to Doom one soon and see how the idea began.

I wonder if the actual game is any good.

All I've seen is hate for the game because the girls don't have routes.

I've always found the villainess trope to be boring and poorly used when I've seen it, even though the basics of a character like that sounds like it could be good

Until the villainess that just showed up in the current arc of SSS Class Suicide Hunter manga. There's somethin special about this one

Finally finished Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing. The overall show stayed consistently good, though focusing on each character's internal motivations and reasons for political intrigue reminded me of Space Battleship Yamato. It was worthy of the Last Exile moniker, which was good. Another 20 eps of the show seemed daunting, but it was worth doing.

It'll be nice to dig back into shorter shows though. I'm so used to 12 episode stuff nowadays, 40-50 ep things (Two full seasons of Exile) seem fucking daunting.

Yup, this is true. Bakarina / All Routes Lead to Doom is still a really fun story though.

Honestly, the male version of the fantasy isekai template barely exists too. They're largely just based on Dragon Quest III with little variation.

Looking at Winter.

Sengouku Youko is getting an uninterrupted 3 course which I assume will cover everything. This is the safest bet of the season assuming it's not an absolute disaster like Biscuit Hammer. The PV looked solid though so at least we've avoided the integrity animation problem.

People say Solo Leveling is good but the concept is unappealingly generic. Would love to be surprised.

The Witch and the Beast I've read a few chapters of and liked, so I'll give it a shot. It's a great looking manga though so it'll take a strong production for me to not just read the manga.

Very excited for Dungeon Meshi, these PVs are fantastic. I'm hoping this goes the Frieren or Apothacary route and I can still watch the anime after almost certainly just going ahead and resting the manga.

And Metallic Rouge looks sick.

If all those land then that's enough, though I welcome surprises.

It's basically the best korean reverse-isekai.

Main character has cool powers and the artwork is awesome. Overall good characters, cool enemies, some interesting takes on the plot tropes and doesn't take to long to start getting answers. Limited harem stuff (super limited compared to most isekai stuff)

It's by far my favorite from the 6-10 I've tried.

Solo Leveling was hard carried by its phenomenal art. An anime adaptation is not going to be particularly good.

I'm sort of dreading the Dungeon Meshi anime. It's one of those series that slowly builds to a really plot-heavy second half, and most watchers have the attention span and patience of a goldfish, so I'm going to be salty when people starting shouting MID after 2-3 episodes.

I do get what you mean, but Frieren is the most popular new anime of the season!

It being a Trigger show is definitely going bring in a certain subset of fans who are watching for the studio first and the series second, though. Some people still in that mindset that Imaishi is the only director at Trigger.

So far the only Manwha that's gotten an anime I've liked has been Tower of God, and that's still the biggest one, right?

Frieren definitely starts out with more immediately interesting hooks. Dungeon Meshi has a good start, but what makes it special isn't immediately apparent. Having read both mangas to their current state, I'd give Meshi the edge, although it's finished and Frieren is not.

Speaking of finished, I see The Witch and the Beast is on indefinite hiatus! I wonder what the plans are there....

The best manhwa adaptation is somehow Raeliana. Honestly, I think the anime industry is just dropping the ball with them. If they can turn garbage light novels into hits, they should be able to adapt stories that people already like.

Oh I like Raeliana! I had no idea it was a Manwha.

I'm interested in Raeliana, but it sounds like it's the sort of adaptation where it just ends right in the middle of the story.

I'm interested to see when something breaks them. They've already saturated Brotherhood itself with so many more reviews than any other anime on the site, that it's nigh impossible to actually change it's own score, so they have to bomb the competition.

But eventually the numbers will be against them. Eventually they'll run out of soldiers.

I dunno I got two people to watch brotherhood in the past year so there's always going to be new fans

Blue Eye Samurai episode 1 was great but I could have done without them using literal Kill Bill music for the short training montage. Really took me out of the moment.
