Yeah, as someone who frequently gives/deducts points for looks, I actually agree that Leblanc isn't very attractive. She's not ugly or anything but even if you like the Lady Luck Dressphere the Dullwings all look better in it pretty easily.

I'm conflicted on Leblanc. On the one hand she kinda represents everything that's wrong with X-2. On the other hand, she does it in such a ridiculous way that it's much less annoying than the other offenders in the game-- to the extent that I might actually like her character if she were in fact ridiculously out of place like she would be in a normal game. But she's not, so instead of standing out she just seems like "another character in the game who does what she does better but not well enough to stand out." Let's say uh...

The characters seemed neutral/slightly melancholy to me, and I just felt my interpretation was the more natural response to their situation than yours. There certainly wasn't any sort of beaming with happiness going on from either character if that's what you're trying to imply.

Madoka's cast is one of the worst in any anime I've seen. There isn't a single standout character there. The redhead who eats stuff was decent. Homura was okay. Kyubei I can see the appeal in even if I didn't like him. Everyone else was varying degrees of bad.
And I don't see how you get they don't mind. Just because they're not whining about it doesn't mean they don't mind. As I recall it went something like
*Madoka spoilers* Madoka becomes a magical girl with the power to destroy all witches, and spends the rest of her existence doing that, in complete isolation from anything but shadow distortion things or whatever Homura retains the memory of Madoka, the girl she went back in time like 10000 times to try and save, and remembers her but can never see her again cause she doesn't exist I don't see how that's good for either character. Madoka doesn't seem like she's doing it except out of obligation, and Homura is permanently unable to see Madoka who she was basically in love with and clearly wanted to make sweet lesbian love to. But it's all "okay" because Homura is safe and Madoka is "saving the world?" F that. Seems like a crappy deal for both of them. If you can't get happier than that, then you should make it a disaster, the way I see it.
Bittersweet endings are generally really hard to get to work (I can't think of any offhand that I've liked), and if you fail, they're pretty terrible. I think they're probably at their worst when the story tries to sell them as a happy ending but they're closer to the other way, which IIRC Madoka did to some extent. -- I tried to have a fierce rivalry with SuperNiceDog, but he made me look worse than a GameFAQs Contest! |

Oh Madoka was this year? I was thinking it was last year.
Well then I've seen 6 anime from this year and I'll update my list accordingly, because it's important to be thorough. 6. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (slight spoilers) This was a while back so it's hard to be exactly sure on what I disliked. Starts out interestingly enough, episode 3 convinced me to keep watching past the point of no return, and I like the visuals for when they go into witch land or whatever, but I'm down on the direction they took the plot in the end. It's like it didn't have it in it to turn itself into a complete disaster story for the characters, but didn't want to be uplifting either, so it leaves you with this sorta ending that's neither happy nor unhappy and just kinda leaves you feeling sour on the whole thing. I wanna say something about the last episode or two was utterly nonsensical too (in a bad way) but I'm forgetting exactly what it was-- probably a good thing. See the difference is I think everyone who gets crushed by Cena will benefit just by virtue of being involved in a storyline where people really want to see them win even if they don't, with the amount of build they get to take him down being the most important thing rather than the result.
Now I agree that the one who finally beats Cena should be thought of in advance, but that's so the ultimate victor can be properly built (since the guy who takes him down needs a bigger build for the story to flow well) before the storyline gets stale more than necessarily needing to have someone beat him to get fanfare. The guy who gets the biggest build will get more "over" than anyone who went against Cena regardless of whether he wins. It's just that if Cena isn't ultimately beaten the story doesn't get a good resolution, overstays its welcome like the nWo did, and then people tune out. -- I tried to have a fierce rivalry with SuperNiceDog, but he made me look worse than a GameFAQs Contest! |
