guess i'll throw my hat in. instead of ranking all the animes i've seen, i'll only do those with 2 criteria:

1) i completed them. this will remove a lot of stuff (e.g., never finished Iroha or Last Exile) and make sit subject to change once i catch up with the backlog.

2) they aren't one of these long running series that spans across years. mainly, fairy tail and gintama for those i've seen (and am mostly caught up on the former while the latter's having me way behind).

3) it's completed its season. this is going to kick Guilty Crown off the list more than anything else.

still had a list of over 30. thus, made a top 10.

10) Blue Exorcist

this year was pretty heavy on slice of life and drama. when it wasn't either of those it was boob fighting, and then the rare standard shounen. hell, that subgenre seems to be fading away and being left with a few shows to represent it - fairy tail and one piece right now (or Beelzebud if you want to count how the hell that show is at 50 episodes)- but Exorcist was a fun one. i enjoy good action scenes and this delivered. decent cast but nothing too special, and Yukio sucks. Rin was pretty good of a lead, but the best character easily goes to Mephisto. Shura needed more time but i won't complain there. it didn't overstay its welcome, completed the story, didn't go too fast, and gave us another badass old man.

9) Puella Magi Madoka Magica

okay, only after following the 3 rules does this make a top 10 list. so sure, madoka's a top 10 anime of 2011 if you don't include any that are continuing through Jan, any that didn't start before the start of the year, and those i completed. but really that's just a matter of placement, i did quite love this show. it was different. at the start of the year it stood out for being not just good, but with a weird premise of opening themes attacking. and then things are kinda slow until episode 3 and 4 where you go "uhhhh what just happened."

then it continues to spiral into an incredibly dark series from an unexpected result. and that basically created one of the best characters all season in Kyubei. didn't care about Madoka. didn't like half the cast there either - Mami rather sucked. i love her attack style, but as a character she was pretty bad and got worse in the other timelines with Homura. her going crazy was just a giant 'this is a bad character.' Sayaka meanwhile was just dumb start to finish. Kyouko was awesome. Homura was the only really good character there and might be the badass of the season (i'd say 2nd though). hammerspace for a power is awesome, and being a one woman army is fun stuff. the character made sense and was great all around. she was the 2nd best character of the show behind the adorable demon, but still one of the best all season. ditto for the show really. great show and i'm fine with the ending. wouldn't really call it bittersweet though because... nobody's really all that bitter about it. madoka's satisfied with it. Homura still wants her but still goes on and knows she's around her at all times. but really, it was a complete ending. not sweet, not bitter, more ironic if anything because they probably DID speed up the end of the universe for the sake of a couple little girls.

8) Fate/zero

yes, only 8.
it's the unquestionable king of animation all season. gorgeous looking. it also has a lot of great characters, of which, Rider is the badass of the season. that man deserves to be on the greatest of all time list. Gil was pretty damn fun too - few scenes this year top the wine grab. but the real thing that stops it is that this was only the first... half or third. not sure. they've done a fantastic job delivering content and i'm fine with the slower pace considering just how GOOD the animation is. the guys doing this know exactly what they're in charge of and aren't letting anyone down. if the show in full (as they want it) were to be crammed into a year it'd be No. 1 easy. can't even say i dislike anyone either. even the villains are friggin' awesome and you know the guy doing Caster's voice is having the time of his life with how utterly insane he sounds. can't help but smile. like i can't say i'd like a concentration of 13 episodes of any other show this season, it wins that category. but in terms of a complete show, it falls a bit flat because it's not. however it did finish its season, so it counts. Rider da best. then Gil. Lancer's awesome, but so are his masters for all the wrong reasons. Kotomine's great but really, Gil is the one who pushes that. Emiya's got an awesome style of magic, combat, and strategy to him. Waver is pretty much entirely made by Rider, but Caster's the 3rd best of the show behind Rider and Gil. insane is insanely awesome.

Saber still is lame. but better than Fate/Stay since she wears a suit and fights better. i enjoyed the negotiation quite a bit.

I'm kinda surprised that someone who apparently likes the characters didn't seem to think about how they like, uh, felt.

On the other hand, it's quite believable that you neither like the characters nor are able to think about how they felt, huh?

Here's the easiest proof that it was a happy ending: because it was presented as one. It simply didn't feel bittersweet in the least. That's QED.

That's um, exactly why I didn't like it, because it was presented as one but shouldn't have been one based on what happened and the characters didn't really sell it that way either. That's what I said in my original post too.

Like I'm not sure what you're trying to do by "proving" it was a happy ending. If it was a good happy ending we wouldn't even be having a debate here, which is what matters more than whether it's technically a happy ending or not.

guess i'll continue with 3 more.

7) Carnival Phantasm

the superior TYPE MOON production.
it's borderline random with what they do but it helped turn F/S Caster from random who cares character to hell yeah Caster. any show that does that has my respect. Taiga Dojo in full color, with full motion? Phantasmoon? Ruby? conversations between Shirou and Shiki as they try to decide how they're going to cram the roots into one before realizing it's impossible? just all around hilarious show, especially if you're a fan of the material, because it all will make sense. except for how BA SA KA can do shopping. i'm not sure how that works out, but the outcome seemed pretty spot on. i would also play the hell out of that 8 bit game they had in it. best character of show is a hard one due to the way it's done. overall, it's gotta be Arc or Taiga. hail Taiga.

spoilers: Lancer dies.

6) Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko

i'm a sucker for good themes and this ending theme was probably the 2nd best behind Bakuman Season 2. but otherwise i really, really dug the art style. Boku Tomo wasn't quite with the same feeling as this one art-wise, it just really stood out in this kind of series. the lead here was pretty nice, and it's always interesting to see the main character establish a point system for how his routes are going in real life. good times.

also, one hell of a MILF. best character this show is hard to tell too because really, they're all pretty damn good. Makoto's a relatable lead and has a set of balls to him. Ryushi is entertaining as hell all throughout. Maekawa's outfits are something else. Erio kinda sucks at first but eventually is more entertaining (plus she's the hottest character). Meme's flirty nature despite her age leads to hilarious situations, ditto for her blackmailing ability. would say she's the 2nd best of the show, with the top going to Makoto. a good lead is good, though it's close. otherwise just overall an easy show to relax and enjoy. no major drama to worry about like others have it, nice pacing, and fun.

5) Baka and Test

awesome show. if we're talking about likable casts, Baka and Test is the 2nd best this year. this season we got some more serious situations come up between Manami and Akihasa, a better look to who Yuji is and his relationship with Shouko, and there was more crossdressing. best character is Yuji this season, not Akihase, and that's in large part because Yuji's character is a lot more interesting really. while Akihase's entertainingly dumb, Yuji's strategically stupid. it's an odd mix, but hey. Minami was pretty great this year too, and yandere Mizuki is delicious. one of the best comedies this year and some really interesting stories to go with it. definite must watch.

hm. i forgot about that end and i actually saw that show completely. still prefer Bakuman S2's ending as No. 1, and... it's close with Ruru. honestly think i'm still going with Ruru 2nd, because while the song is good there's something about the simplicity in that song that i just adore. it's easy to listen to regardless of what you're doing, while this one isn't, so yeah. that end is 3rd best.

while i'm at it, openings are a different situation and harder. a lot were really good, but i think the winner goes to Nurarihyon S2 there (the 2nd one).

anyway gots to go through a few more.

4) Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?

few things are more brilliant than a super kick attack that's really a chainsaw to the face. first off, best character's definitely Ayumu. a zombie magical "girl" who gets a cuter outfit as he gains more power with a harem - i'm not sure who wrote this but appreciate them making the best zombie ever and the most absurd character this year. his hallucinations of Hellscythe are also awesome. one of the funniest shows this season (not as funny as Baka and Test though!) with some top notch animation and fight scenes worked wonders for the show though, and Ep 12 + the OVA afterwards were what bumped it up here instead of being a rank or two under. story was interesting in that it actually had a story to try to explain all the absurd stuff, like say how ramen destroys monsters (okay that's not really explained too well but is still awesome), but there seemed to be a lot more to the characters than the show gave us. despite that it still gave a decent amount of backstory for most, and more importantly was something that was easy to watch and 'get'. of the harem shows it was the best, with good amounts of everything, fanservice included. especially from the two vampires.

3) Sket Dance

surprise No. 3 entry. have seen every episode thus far, it started this year. it's a bit of a loophole on the 3rd rule but Sket Dance definitely did finish a season during the year (hell, season and a half) and it'd be wrong to not include it as a result. week in week out watch it. story's entertaining as hell and there's actual backstory - end of season 1 was the Switch tale which pretty much threw the entire series from just a gag show to a serious one as well. this one's really a matter of the main 3 characters being so damn good. best character of show, Onehime. surprisingly the show doesn't push for the standard fanservice on her despite being the best looking girl in the show and focuses more on her tomboyish ways. the premise is a bit silly - a 3 person group solving random problems - and done before (which they joked about in the Gintama episode), but the school setting works out for a more slice of life kind of feeling. the main character's weapon of choice being a slingshot is also an unusual twist, and his power is one of those 'this is a cool power but so lame to watch.' it's an unusual twist that works out pretty well for itself though, same for a hockey stick wielding character and... pretty much everything to do with Switch. knew it was gonna be in my top 10, but when thinking about the shows i've enjoyed the most, only 2 ranked higher. also it had a pretty kickass insert song that was briefly an opening by the 'group' itself.

Yeah. We couldn't be more different on this. I absolutely hate when the presentation doesn't match the reactions of the characters and/or what the logical progression of the events should give you. There's nothing worse than feeling like you're being told how to think, for me.

2. Mawaru Penguindrum
Status: Complete
I didn't even know this was airing until I saw it on a website, and then I got to the first Survival Strategy and knew I was watching something special. The whole anime is a huge mind f*** with twists everywhere and dark themes mixed in with penguin comic relief. It's amazing how they fit everything into this and still managed to have an ending with not only satisfied the story, but blew away every expectation. The characters range from okay to amazing. The amazing being Ringo. Even when characters change their status (IE Ringo demoted from main character in the second half) they still play important roles that not only build the characters, but also build the story. It's funny (and sad) how so much bad stuff happened to Ringo, and when she finally gets the one thing she wants the most it's taken from her. Poor Ringo. The penguins are weird, I mean they actually seem kinda important at first but are really their for comic relief. The greatest thing was when Ringo was drowning and the penguin looked like it was going to save her... and then went after a fish.

1. Steins;Gate
Status: Complete
Tuturu~ Remember when we all almost dropped this after one episode? I seem to later remembering someone saying this was the only show of the season they actively looked forward to seeing each week. Steins;Gate presented us with a great cast, each character has their own dream they want to accomplish and it's all possible at the hands of mad scientist Okarinnn. The series had a way of really giving you that glimmer of hope, and then trashing it the next moment, only to give it back again. The use of time travel was really well done. The characters are all good for the most part too, on top of this everyone is extremely well acted. Each character was given what they wanted, but gave it up for a greater good. Hououin is a truly great character who showed a full range of emotions and development. There's a character for everyone, the Mad Scientist, the super moe, the Tsundere, the 2d womanizer (who actually likes 3d woman too if I remember), the trap, the neighborhood girl (autism moe), that creepy girl everyone hates, etc. Time to get a metal ompa.

I am going to post my highly original and not at all inspired by others posting their lists, TOP 10 ANIME of the YEAR.

Like Wang, I am excluding long term ongoing stuff (bleach and Fairy Tail), OVAS( Gundam Unicorn, Carnival Phantasm, Hidamari Sketch SP, Mazinkaiser SKL and Katte ne Kaizou), and Shows that are only on cour 1 of 2 (Chihaya furu, Phi Brain, Mirai Nikki).

That said, Gundam Unicorn, Mazinkaiser SKL and KnK would make this list if it included OVAs and MN and Chihaya furu would be contenders.

Without FURTHER Ado- THE LIST

10.) Fractale

I know I know SAVES ANIME blah blah blah. Behind all of the jokes and such there was a solid show. I found the setting to be pretty interesting and the pair of girls were likable, especially Nessa. I also found Klein to be kind of an interesting protag given how he got swept up mostly by his love for old things. Things got a little hairy at the end, but the ending was satisfying and ultimately it was fun adventure that progressed at a satisfying rate, had good art, interesting characters and interpersonal dynamics and an awesome OP.

9.) Working'!!

This has been the SEASON of sequels and while several of them were let-downs, Working'!! has to be a major exception. The jokes were funnier, some of the side characters like Yamada and Soma got more screentime, and our main character continues to be a model B8anime member in the most hysterical way. Also we got to see more of his sisters who have turned out ot be pretty funny as well. Great Comedy, cant wait for Working'!!?!@$@

8.) Boku Wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai

This show was pretty fantastic. Ecchi harem shows are a dime a dozen anymore, so to stand out from the crowd like this one did with practically no frills is pretty impressive on its own. The entire cast is funny, especially Yozora, Rika, and Sena. If I had to pick a favorite Id probably go with Yozora just for her abrasive bullying which stayed funny and original throughout the series. Several of the theme episodes were especially well executed, even if there were a few too many of them.

7.) Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko

Ah yes, Electromagnetic Wave Girl. this show was pretty great. Its features our mostly normal protag being dropped into crazy town. All 4 of the girls in his harem have something...well really off about them. This makes for a lot of madcap situations and some coming of age sort of stuff. I enjoy all of the girls i nthis one to a large extent and the SHAFT art helped as well.

6.) Kore-Wa Zombie Desu-ka

This is the last harem show on the list I promise. Its placement actually has more to do with our Zombie protagonist than his cast of potential lovers( really not much suspense in this harem though-- but that's a good thing in this case) The action and magical "girl" sequences are awesome in this ,especially the one in the final episode. Our silent female lead is pretty great and I admit to shedding a tear once or twice over her situation. Wonderful show, ascends past its genre to be something pretty special, as is everything else above it on this list.

5.) Sengoku Basara: The Last Party

I just watched this and maybe I am being a bit kind to it, but this was FREAKING AWESOME. Great action featuring MAH SUPAHHERO Ieyasu Tokugawa being the most hilariously kind person ive seen in this kind of show and some really great "oh crap" moments in the big fight scene. Oh yeah and the best end credits OF ALL TIME.

4.) Kamisama Dolls

This show was incredible. I dont feel like any single character or incident within it was exemplary, but as a total package it was simply wonderful. The Dolls themselves are highly interesting , as is the in-settingreasoning for their existence. The entire puropose ofthe show is whether or not the dolls are capable of being used for good, while one of them is being used forthe express purpose of murder. The episode of the SEASON was this shows backstory episode which was just so sad and sweet, yet informative. For the first time I was cheering for our protag big time, and yet could feel for AKi as well.

I really hope it gets a sequel, but even if it doesnt ive started following the manga.

3.) Sket Dance

This show started this year and like Boku Tomo, rose from a fairly generic premise to just be incredible. I would add more but Wang has posted my thoughts almost word for word.

2.) Mawaru Penguindrum

This shows reliance on heavy symbolism was always going to endear it to me, but its execution was in all ways pretty solid. Rock and Roll japan sequences, those factory sequences, Ringos...quirks, all of the setting that gets laid out in the first 10 episodes for the most part comes together in the end to solve the mystery of who everyone is and what the hell is going on. A fine series, but not QUITE the best of the year.

1.) Kimi To Boku

BEst show of the season, year, whatever hands down. Enough said. Good characters, good situations, and a good time all around. Best nirvana-inducing show since Aria

I haven't seen this yet, but how much does this follow Basara 3?

Not as much as I wouldve liked, but it does follow one of the paths fairly well. I think the biggest difference is that the person who killed Hideyoshi in SB3 isnt the same person who killed him in the SB2 anime.

here we go. this one's probably gonna be the biggest writeup.

2) Nichijou

rarely does an opening tell you EXACTLY what you're gonna get, but in Nichijou's case, it was spot on.

easily the most underappreciated anime this season because no, it wasn't fielding a high budget for animation, and no, it wasn't doing anything dramatic or special. in fact, the very point of the show is ordinary life in extraordinary situations. your lead characters are a trio of schoolgirls. there's a shy teacher, a mad scientist teacher, a rich student, and a tsundere student. there's a couple who made a club for themselves.

except her being tsundere is really out of place, and she literally rockets or guns down whenever is around her when she's tsun tsun.
and for a rich guy, he rides a goat to school.
one of the trio is pretty much the perfect straightman, another one wants to be the prankster, and the last one.... is mostly ordinary. problem is when her quirks come out, they really come out, like her inability to properly jump over a bar as she... rocket propells herself. or how when running from embarassment she'll proceed to save a kid drowning a mile away while doing random other stuff in her fleeing.
the guy from the couple is filthy rich beyond everyone else. oh, and the club he made actually exists despite the fact that Go and Soccer should not mix. and yet, it's a sport here. somehow.
oh yeah, the mad scientist teacher's a paranoid klutz.

...and from there your cast starts getting strange. from the guy who has a mohawk not to be rebellious, but because his hair just happens to go that way, the robot who has a spinner on her back that really does nothing, a 9 year old professor, a talking cat, a talking crow at one point, and a principal who can german suplex a deer.

it's an ordinary school life setting, fit with mostly ordinary characters, but all of them having something very bizarre and unique. it all comes together to make a perfect mix that shows like Azumanga and Minami-ke tried to reach, but couldn't. there's nothing special about any of the premise, but there's something special about every character. it's a gag show, through and through. while there's some serious moments in it, they're played off so well and humorously that it's hard to take it seriously, in a good way. this wasn't the only "every day life" show of the season that was good (Kimi to Boku was pretty great) but it's the most unique one by a mile, and every episode past the first 3-4 had me laughing to tears at least once.

best character of the show's a hard one. Sakamoto, the talking cat? the excessive tsundere in Misato? the wooden cubes of the universe in pigtails of Mio? or the crazy, stupid, yet lovable Yuuko? it's a tough call between the last two. because nobody really talks about it, i shall provide proof of why this deserves to be here.

note, the below should be torpedo, not fish.

is a very strong argument. almost as powerful:

both say Mio's the best. and she has some amazing skill too.

less to do with Mio here, but:

an argument for Mai however can be made too:

this one works just as well for Mai or Yuuko.

and as for Yuuko:

(Yuuko for MPFC imo)

or one of Mio and Yuuko again:

and while none of these, Sakamoto has a place too:

i could do this all day. honestly one day i'll resee this one and No. 1 and decide which one i like best. both have a place in my top 10 of all time. for now, this is mostly a post for Nichijou. the 2nd best anime of the year, arguably 1st, and one of the best of all time.

Literally another top 10 list.

10. C

Yeah, this show had a lot of stuff wrong with it (namely the MC being lame and the ending being a little disappointing, if better than it could've been), but it was still a really cool show, and if they'd fixed that stuff it would've been my favorite of the year. Over the top action shows are one of my favorite genres, and this was a splendid example of the genre. I think a lot of people complained about the show because they wanted more serious economics, but C is not the sort of show you should take seriously. C's economics are just like Sengoku Basara's politics, something to give a reason for everyone f***ing s*** up. And I really liked the way it was done here. The battles were really pretty and over the top, and while they made no sense, they certainly entertained. All the other characters had pretty solid backstories too.

9. Steins;gate

Mostly inferior to the game, except that it rushed through most of the worst parts and did really well with the drama. The VN was great though, so a bit of inferiority's no big deal. More people here should check the VN out.

8. Precure All Stars DX3

aww yeah Precure at its finest. 70 minutes of pure fanservice, full of nice animation and great combo attacks. Was a splendid finale to my Precure marathon.

7. Kaiji 2

I wasn't really as into Kaiji 1 as a lot of people seem to be, but I did like it. My main problem with it is that it always seemed kinda lame when Kaiji was losing and being pathetic - it was a neat twist on the usual style, but I prefer the Akagi way of doing things. Kaiji 2 made the losing times a lot more interesting though, with Kaiji thinking the whole time or taking patheticness to the extreme. I loved how he lost to temptation, and the typical Kaiji crying moments had better leadup than ever. Focusing on a couple arcs instead of several was also a great choice, since it allowed more development of the ups and downs rather than having them be super sudden. It also made the climaxes that much more satisfactory. Kaiji also reigned supreme on the aural front, with some amazing bgm and narration. Maybe the best narration ever.

6. Katte ni Kaizou

Loved SZS, loved this. Penis jokes were pretty funny and creative for anime, but even after throwing those away it continues to be fantastic, and just gets funnier every episode. The group is made up of hilarious member (Chitan is kinda lame, but he can be pretty funny at times), with Umi starting out kinda annoying but getting funnier every episode until she becomes totally amazing in the final two. Kaizou is a pretty clever and entertaining lead, while Suzu's one of my favorite character types, and the episodes focusing on her really showcase her greatness. Wish this was getting a multiple season series.

5. Penguindrum

Already talked about this earlier. Will also add that music and comedy were both top tier. Shame it wasn't quite as good as Utena overall.

4. Mazinkaiser SKL

Now this is how you do a mecha OVA. I think I liked New Getter Robo a little better overall, since its highs were a bit higher, SKL definitely has the advantage in that not a single moment is dull. The two leads are both insanely badass, the action is almost constant, the villains are ridiculous, the soundtrack is metal, and the action is the best I've seen in a mecha series outside of Rebuild and Lagann-hen. It was truly wonderful to see mecha fights that were as fast and brutal as hand to hand fights for once. Every year should have a series like this.

3. SenBasa: The Last Party

Speaking of badass over the top action...again, I just talked about this, so I don't have much to say here. Loved the way they made the final scene for the master planner a comedy scene. Tokugawa still the worst character in the series.

2. Fate/Zero

Actually liked this a bit more in the first half than the second half (of what we got - season two promises to be even better). Production values were top tier, character interactions were brilliantly written, Rin is a miracle of the universe, and the atmosphere was perfect. Kinda felt like everything else disappeared when I was watching Fate/Zero. It does have some problems - Kiritsugu is a loser, it's only half done, no one's died yet - but it was still a fantastic start. If it can crank up the quality in S2, this stands a good chance at being one of my favorites ever.

1. Madoka

Yeah, the most popular anime of the year are my favorites. Deal with it. I've also talked a ton about Madoka, and a lot of what I said about other shows applies here. Production values were amazing (looking forward to even better animation in the BDs), and the show really knew how to build on what we'd already seen. Every episode was better than the last (except maybe ep 2), almost every character developed to become more likable, and the ending was absolutely perfect. Slow start means it's still not one of my favorite shows ever (this year was kinda disappointing in that regard. Not a single show in my overall top 15), but it was a great ride.

Oh whoops, forgot Mirai NIkki on my list. Would probably go around 4 or 5. Quite liked the manga, but the anime makes it even better. Absolutely loving it so far, and if they manage to improve the next arc too it might be a solid 10.
