I just recently finished Ben-to, I think only me, Chrono, and swordz were watching this, which might say a lot of things....but I didn't think it was bad if you can get over the whole idea that they're beating up each other over discounted food, pretty funny as well.

That's exactly it. The idea of the show is a setup for hilarity in general, but it wasn't funny at all. Really disappointing.

10. Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai
Status: Complete
This series benefits from a good setting, and a great cast. The only character who is kinda bad is Maria, but since almost all of her scenes are about her fighting with Kobato (who is great btw) or getting abused by Yozora it's all good. It's weird cause none of the characters are really amazing, but they just mesh with each other really well. Rika is probably my favorite, simply because it's hilarious when she oversexualizes every single thing... the Evangelion reference was great, also the fact that everyone is scared of Kodaka because of his hair. It also had a nice little sidestory thing about Yozora and Kodaka.

9. Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni!
Status: Complete
I have to say, for a show that uses the same three jokes or so over and over again, I'm impressed how funny it is. If you saw the first season none of the material is really new, there's still cross dressing jokes, stuff about Hideyoshi's gender, Yuuji being blinded by Shoko, Minami being flat (omg when her summon was basically a Thomp and Aki was like "Don't say flat" that was amazing.) Aiko is great too (the green haired tease). The season did have some serious episodes too...which was kinda weird, but added some nice back story. The episode on how Aki and Minami met was terrific.

8. Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?
Status: Complete
The first episode was a rollercoaster of this is awesome and why is this happening? Like that part where he punched a giant crayfish. Anyways, the show really built off the premise well never really taking itself too seriously, but still you know each character has some dire circumstances that initially kept them together. Oh, there's also the fact Haruna's special move is a kick and it's always "that's not a kick". The last special episode (where they all become idols) was amazing especially when Sera and Sara became background dancers and were like "How did it come to this?". The cast is great, the humor is great, a good mindless show to watch.

7. Nichijou
Status: Complete
Did I get all the jokes in Nichijou? No. Do I care? No. It's really hard to explain the appeal, it's kinda crazy at times, and other times you just wonder what's going on. None of the characters aside from Nano and Sakamoto are that memorable, but each character has their funny parts. The teacher who wanted to ask Sakurai out was great, especially when he would always deny that something terrible just happened. The show was built on running gags, where even if you didn't get it the first time (Like Mio's airplane adventure) it became funny the subsequent times they puled it off. Overall I'd say the show was pieced together very well to hide some of it's minor flaws.

6. Mirai Nikki
Status: Watching - 12 Episodes
One of the odd things is I don't really like a lot of the characters. I mean all of them, aside from Yuki can be argued for, but there's just something about the impending doom that is always around. Yuno is pretty great, for some reason a lot of stalker characters end up being entertaining. My favorite is probably Minene though. The story is basically "What can go wrong now" with a lot of weird mystery surrounding Yuno, more mysterious then the actual diaries. I hope it remains as good as it's been. Like an elite.

Man, I can't judge a show based on stuff that hasn't happened yet.

5. Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko
Status: Complete
This will probably be the oddest ranking on the list for the very fact most ratings have been kinda middling. I really enjoyed it though, the cast of females (Erio, Ryuuko, Maekawa, Meme...and even Yashiro) are all great. It's weird because Erio actually has/had a serious problem and the whole show passes it off like it's a big joke. Ryuuko is obviously a huge moeblob, even more so than the other characters. Part of the show is like acceptance of the weird kid and the other part is really wanting that weird kid to be right. The show is pretty slow paced, but each character does slowly get some development and don't really remain cardboard cutouts (except meme, but she can stay the same). Also, the cousin is at least not a complete harem idiot like some characters, although, he is admittedly dumb when it comes to relationships. I wonder if I got adolescence points for this.

4. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Status: Complete
There was so much controversy over this show, it stopped airing for a little bit! Madoka Magica has great visuals with a weird horror like witch zone (or whatever it was called) that really played off on the whole mood of the show. Yeah, the characters eyes and hair were the same color. The music was great too, the gothic type themes playing really fit into the show. The characters were okay, and if I was going to complain about something, I'd say of all my top 5 animes Madoka had the worst cast (although they are not a bad cast). But I think if you look at each character as a tool to help Madoka develop then they really pulled it off well. Always eating girl (Kyouko) was great though. And the Kyuubey, a creature of pure evil. Part of the appeal was obviously how it turned the genre around, and even if you don't really care for the show you have to admit it was done with style.

3. Chihayafuru
Status: Watching - 12 Episodes
This is my highest ranking show that will be heading into the new year. I've been extremely impressed so far. I'm not sure a show has shown so much emotion for me since like Clannad. You watch an episode and can't help but cheer and cry with the characters the whole way. The cast is amazing. Like early Hanasaku Iroha they really hit it on making them likable, but completely human and characters that people can relate to almost perfectly. I do find it hilarious that a lot of people like Arata the best even though he has done almost nothing since the child arc.

Also, the top 2 are Steins;Gate and Mawaru Penguindrum. I'll get to those later.

Oh Madoka was this year? I was thinking it was last year.

Well then I've seen 6 anime from this year and I'll update my list accordingly, because it's important to be thorough.

6. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (slight spoilers)

This was a while back so it's hard to be exactly sure on what I disliked. Starts out interestingly enough, episode 3 convinced me to keep watching past the point of no return, and I like the visuals for when they go into witch land or whatever, but I'm down on the direction they took the plot in the end. It's like it didn't have it in it to turn itself into a complete disaster story for the characters, but didn't want to be uplifting either, so it leaves you with this sorta ending that's neither happy nor unhappy and just kinda leaves you feeling sour on the whole thing. I wanna say something about the last episode or two was utterly nonsensical too (in a bad way) but I'm forgetting exactly what it was-- probably a good thing. Also the characters were pretty boring as a whole, which is never a good thing. 4/10.

If you can't get happier than that, then you should make it a disaster, the way I see it.

Bittersweet endings are generally really hard to get to work (I can't think of any offhand that I've liked), and if you fail, they're pretty terrible. I think they're probably at their worst when the story tries to sell them as a happy ending but they're closer to the other way, which IIRC Madoka did to some extent.

If it was a real one. Not a "hey look this is happy" "what no it's not" ending. I mean I'm pretty sure with all the timey wimey crap that was going on in the last episode or two you could've definitely had a happier ending than that, no matter what the guy says.

As I recall it went something like

Madoka becomes a magical girl with the power to destroy all witches, and spends the rest of her existence doing that, in complete isolation from anything but shadow distortion things or whatever
Homura retains the memory of Madoka, the girl she went back in time like 10000 times to try and save, and remembers her but can never see her again cause she doesn't exist

I don't see how that's good for either character. Madoka doesn't seem like she's doing it except out of obligation, and Homura is permanently unable to see Madoka who she was basically in love with and clearly wanted to make sweet lesbian love to. But it's all "okay" because Homura is safe and Madoka is "saving the world?" F that. Seems like a crappy deal for both of them. Maybe good for humanity but who cares about humanity that's not what the show was about.

Madoka still the best show of the year

I thought Madoka's ending was pretty great. Show got better and better as it went along, until the last three eps which were all pretty much perfect.

I like endings with both happy and sad parts. Madoka saves the universe, but then at the end you see Homura fighting forever, even after humanity goes extinct, with Madoka by her side. Kinda a touching sort of thing.

Sasahara was great, sure, but the rest of the cast was pretty bad. You could've at least picked something with a half-decent cast like Steins;gate or even Penguindrum.

Finished Fate/Zero

My thoughts: It's moving too slow. It feels like we're still in the introduction phase, and nothing really has changed. They just want to keep fleshing out the characters pointing who they are instead of showing obstacles and challenges to surpass. It's still pretty damn good though.

penguindrum's better than madoka in pretty much everyting, so that's a given.
but nichijou just murdered everyone when it came to casts.

the alternative to them moving at this pace would be either the original fate/stay night anime or worse, tsukihime.

Madoka's cast is one of the worst in any anime I've seen. There isn't a single standout character there. The redhead who eats stuff was decent. Homura was okay. Kyubei I can see the appeal in even if I didn't like him. Everyone else was varying degrees of bad.

And I don't see how you get they don't mind. Just because they're not whining about it doesn't mean they don't mind. They certainly didn't seem happy they seemed more like they were dealing with it best they could.

It's the opposite, if anything; you've just decided that they DO mind. But Homura accepted it pretty quickly. I mean, Madoka wasn't really gone, so Homura basically succeeded. And Madoka most certainly didn't mind; she seemed to like the whole omnipresence thing, actually.

The characters seemed neutral/slightly melancholy to me, and I just felt my interpretation was the more natural response to their situation than yours. There certainly wasn't any sort of beaming with happiness going on from either character if that's what you're trying to imply.

edwardsdv and swordz9 are basically the comedy heel tag team of this topic, why would people be taking them seriously?

Madoka's cast is meh but the show itself is excellent, at least until the ending. Episode 10 was GOD tier but 11 and 12 were ugh. Feels pretty awful too since a lot of hype was generated for those two episodes in between 10 and the finale was the earthquake.

Sacrifices being worth it doesn't necessarily mean it was a happy ending though.

If a story ends where the lovable hero sacrifices himself to save the universe while the leading heroine weeps for him as he does it, but then ultimately manages to go on, that doesn't mean that it was a happy ending even if the sacrifice was worth it. That's pretty much Madoka. Minus the hero being lovable or a man.

Like I'm pretty sure Homura was trying over and over explicitly to prevent that from happening so to think it was a "happy ending" for her is pretty ridiculous.

I'm kinda surprised that someone who apparently likes the characters didn't seem to think about how they like, uh, felt.
