How has w everyone's holiday been? Did you get any games or surprises?

Well. Been entertaining too many friends and family, trying to find time to just rot my brain on some games and media. Got a LOT of books to read.

Got Dominion Nocturne, Dominion Renaissance, and Betrayal Legacy for board games. WarioWare Gold and Luigi's Mansion and Sonic Mania for video games. All those were either gifts, or gifts to myself.

Saw The Favorite, Spider-verse, and Bird Box in the last few days. All good in their own way. And I'm finally reading His Dark Materials (almost done with the subtle knife).

As for my yearly media log that only I care about, looks like I'll end 2018 with:
-60 new films seens
(37 of which were 2018 films)
(26 seen in theaters)
(MoviePass used 11 times)

-25 new seasons of TV
-11 video games
-6 books

Still need to up my book amount by a lot. Feels like I could do for less TV, but I still feel so behind.

Well, Republicans have already shown that they can shut down the government, be blamed for it, and still not get voted out, so it's not surprising that holding the country hostage over their stupid pet projects is firmly in their playbook now.

Except this is different, because Pelosi and Schumer got Trump on camera saying he'll shut down the government AND take all the blame for it. They played Trump like a cheap fiddle, because he's just that fucking stupid.

My favorite part was when Schumer mocked him straight to his face, and he was too stupid to even realize it.

What makes them so good?

Many reasons. It's basically a love letter to Nintendo fans, with a huge cast and insane attention to details, which attack moves, taunts, etc. all featuring call backs to their original games. And more recently, it's become a love letter to gaming itself, with all the 3rd party fighters in. You can play a match with 8 people at once, with none of them even using a Nintendo character. So it's a whole lot of fun, and Ultimate has a truly absurd amount of content.

In addition, it's basically THE fighting game at this point, with a huge fanbase that is dedicated to learning the intricacies of the game. The mechanics are easy to pick up, but difficult to master.

Basically has something for everyone. If you just want to goof off and see what Ganondorf vs. Bowser with Ray Guns is like, go for it. If you want to master a character and compete in tournaments, do it.

I.... what?

I've been trying to explain to Wave for at least a decade now that that's not how Smash works, but alas. Only the tripping mechanic in Brawl even comes close to it. Even items have a variable level of skill involved.

On that note, I'm stoked as hell for Smash, but am also in the midst of planning a dear friend's 30th birthday party in 2 weeks, editing a video, and winding down the show I just finished. I'll probably spend this weekend and this week trying to clear my schedule for Smash.

The Wave Master posted...
Netflix is doing the ultimate purge on all the Marvel Netflix shows; as Daredevil got the axe last night. Joining every Marvel show except The Pubisher and Jessica Jones. (Which I assume will follow shortly.)

This is not at all shocking with Disney lining up shows for their own streaming services. The release date and the price are already available, but the more shows they can get on the service the harder it will be to ignore another streaming service.

I'm currently wrapping up a film that is made for Disney+. I'm sad, but not shocked at Daredevil being canceled, as it almost certainly has to do with Disney+. After all, the series was a critical success and very high in views, and was certainly a marquee Netflix series. So under performing wasn't the cause, and I highly doubt cost was the biggest issue, either. Behind the scene politics could be a reason, but there's not enough to suggest that was the case.

The funny thing is, there's no guarantee that DD goes to Disney+, either. It could be related to the issues of rights, depending on how long the Marvel and Netflix deal was. That said, the Daredevil producers were completely caught by surprise by the cancellation. Season 4 was already in the pre-planning stages. Which would suggest a content rights issue is unlikely to be the reason why. Even stranger, they said that Daredevil (as in, at least the characters) would be returning in some form for a "new adventure" which means....they want to keep using the characters, but not in the current Daredevil show format they made?

It's really quite odd.

WhiskeyDisk posted...
I'm getting sick of everyone and their asshole brother starting their own streaming service. Half the point in cutting the cord is NOT to have to pay $100+ each month for the dozen shows I want to watch and 16 million I don't want to watch, but if everyone wants a piece of that pie, we've pretty much come right back around to the shitty cable TV model all over again.

Yep. The joke is how cable has basically come full circle (although you at least don't have to buy "packages" anymore).

That said, Disney is probably the on;y company that can get away with this. I highly doubt a Dreamworks or WB Stream ever happen. Disney has a huge library, with hits that are apart of the American fabric, as well as the monoliths that are Marvel and Star Wars. They've already announced a Loki/Scarlet Witch cross-over, as well as Falcon/Hawkeye for Disney+. So they have an innate star-power advantage. Then again, apparently Disney+ is supposed to be "family friendly"...so more Disney Channel, just in streaming format, than anything. That might stunt its reach a little bit.

For now, I have zero plans on getting Disney+, especially if it's supposed to be more focused on children programming.

Any who...with a month left, so far this year I have seen/completed:
56 films (25 seens in theaters, 33 from this year, 10 with MoviePass)
22 TV Seasons
10 Video Games
4 Books

I'll probably dedicate all of this month to books, then hunting down some movies I missed. Smash will dominate the month gamewise. Also, sorry I've been away, all!

I was just joking with a co-worker (she teared up at the news) that the Day 1 of every Marvel film probably has his cameo scenes scheduled, just in case.

From what I'd heard, they actually scheduled his scenes so they could film multiple ones at once, with the implication that, in some cases, they were literally filming his scene before anything else in the movie.

The idea being they didn't want to be constantly flying him around all the time with his health being what it was for the last few years, so they'd try to deal with multiple scenes all in one go to get it out of the way.

I have no idea if that's true, though.

That makes sense, but I have questions how they could do that, logistically. His recent cameo where he's driving for Infinity War, for example...when would they have filmed that with all the others? That means they would have to had known these cameo scenes well in advance. Believable to an extent, but some of his cameos, as I recall, involve him being in large crowds, or with the main characters (Wasn't Spider-Man in the same scene as Stan in Homecoming? I'd have to check).

Would be curious for more info on that.

I feel like whether or not you were a Venom fan as a kid will also play a role in how low you set your bar.

I'm also having a hard time seeing how it can be *that* good without Spider-Man being involved. While Venom/Eddie Brock evolved over the years, his sole motivation for a long time was simply hating Peter Parker, so it feels weird to just kinda ignore that here.

Speaking of Disney...never work for them. I knew they'd be corporate as hell before starting this project, but they are cruel masters indeed. Everyone we are in contact with there is actually pretty nice (although I got into a yelling match *which I later won* with our main contact at Disney last week), but the red tape and flaming hoops is absurd. And there's just a bunch of BS on this show in general.

Anyways, hence why I've been dead to the world. Sent my RAM back in to the manufacturer and that took a week to return to me (I don't go onto GFaqs on my phone much). And a ton of birthdays and events in the last 2 months (with my own coming up in a couple of weeks). I also need a Halloween costume. Fuck.

Anyways, short list of stuff:
-Haven't seen Venom. I still have my Moviepass (pre-paid for a year back in March, which bites), so I may still. Saw Bad Times at the El Royale. Entertaining enough, but could definitely cut out a lot of time to become tighter.

-Finally got around to Fargo S.1. I really, really liked the show, curious as to what the next few seasons entail. Starting on the 3rd Season of The Man in the High Castle before Daredevil 3 (hell yes that trailer) and Castlevania S.2 come out (although the latter will likely be easy to see in one sitting).

-Sunless Steam is a really cool game Seriously, give it a try on Steam. An odd mix of Sid Meier's pirates and HP Lovecraft with a rougelike element.

-I started writing my book again, and an Arkham Horror script (although that's for fun). Been around a lot of creative talent lately that's spurring my desire to get at it again.

Here's my media progress so far for this year:
-46 new films seen so far (new defined as "I've never seen them before."
-- 20 of those were seen in theaters
--24 (of the 46) came out this year.
-- Movie pass has been used 9 times (since obtaining it in March)

-18 new TV seasons viewed

-4 books read

-9 games completed

Zeus posted...
Because Germany doesn't have the same rich culinary tradition as Italy or France, for starters.

Neither do many of the other ethnic restaurants that still are far more prevalent than German ones. And to be fair, French restaurants aren't super prominent, either.

Secondly, German-Americans don't have the same national pride as other groups -- and how could they, considering that German parades tend to scare the shit out of people -- so you don't have Germans looking for German restaurants like Italians insist on eating Italian. Third, Germans have acclimated to American culture to a far greater degree than Latinos/Hispanics so, even if there was a greater national heritage than Latinos/Hispanics, Germans don't have the same cultural block.

Your 3rd point has more wight than the second (again, if we are to try and quantify "pride", I'd say it still doesn't make sense how much it's under-represented comparitively).

But that would just explain why historically there hasn't been more German restaurants. But now? When new food styles and fusions are constantly being invented, it seems weird that no one considers German restaurants more of a "niche" to tap into.

Also keep in mind that "English" restaurants aren't much of a thing either.

I'd argue English/Irish/Scottish style pub houses are far more common than German ones. He'll, we have a small handful here in Albuquerque (of all places), versus 0 German places. (There's also a joke to be made about how bland English food is).

Hamburgers are everywhere though

But what about everything else? That'd be like if Mexican joints only sold tacos, and called it a day.

This seems like an oddity in general, but even more so considering that German is the largest national heritage of all Americans by a fairly large percentage.

We have specialized restaurants for even Costa Rican vs Puertan Rican food, but when it comes to German food it feels like there's virtually no options. I know in PA, WI, and other more heavily Germanic areas there's more options, but even then they seem dwarfed by virtually every other type of ethnic cuisine. And Hofbrauhaus is pretty much the only German "chain" I can think of (unless Weinerschnitzel counts).

So what gives? So love for Schnitzel? A large sausage variety? Sauerbraten?

Havent read the article so idk the ins and outs. All I know is I wouldnt like the idea of having nuclear warheads in space or whatever it is theyre planning. But anything that can advance technology has to be a good thing right?

1) Space Force will never actually happen
2) ITP: NASA doesn't exist

who says NASA has to be the only avenue of research into space...?

Maybe I'm thinking of Bosley then. Or something else. I'm sure there's a lot of bunk hair-loss treatments out there

Bosley is hair surgery, where they take the healthy "permanent" hair in the back of head, and transplant it somewhere else. It then grows by itself and is permanent.

Probably the most offensive thing about all of this is how "Space Force" sounds like the name a 5 year old would give the program.

Think of all the names and acronyms for space fleets in every Sci-fi ever, and the Orange wonder settles on "Space Force."

I mean, I guess the online infrastructure is still non-existent, like lack of a dashboard or anything, but the connection speed and great, and the in-game online portals for Splatoon and MK8 at least are just fine.

The online store has a bafflingly bad layout...why it's not divided between the Virtual Console for retro games and indie/Nintendo new originals is annoying. It's also odd that since going gung-ho in offering a ton of retro options with the Wii, they since seem to give less of a shit anymore. Hardly any retro Nintendo classics are on there. Really weird since it's a year and some change after launch.

No Netflix or access to Amazon Prime and whatnot is a non-issue for me, since I have like 12 devices that can access that stuff, but since the Switch is highly portable, it really does seem like an odd admission. It would also be better for plane rides if you could buy and download films onto the storage to watch.

That's kinda it. It's sleek, fun, and has a good lineup.
