Oh, also, there was a trailer for mother! That was made specifically for the theater that was.....a fucking embarrassment. Advertised like a slasher flick.

Was this the trailer that had the line like "the one movie that will definitely mess you up"? The one that made Bardem's character seem like a psychopath? I just assumed it was a horror movie based on that trailer, but after your post I feel potentially misled...

I agree that it's hard to call it "horror"

I'm a little surprised that this opinion has been so common. The movie was largely driven by several scenes of isolated, vulnerable characters exploring a spooky location where they are confronted by a monster and the audience is confronted with a jump scare. That's about as stereotypically "horror" as I can think of, though maybe I'm just not that knowledgeable about the medium and am missing something.

I also took Snake's recommendation list to heart and watched It Follows last night. It was scarier imo.

I thought it was definitely scarier than Get Out or Alien Covenant, which were the only other horror/thriller movies I've seen this year.

Do you guys have any recommendations for movies that are way scarier than this while still maintaining a high quality overall (ie: not schlock)?

I'm glad fans of his books are calling this a faithful adaptation. As someone who's never read King, I enjoyed it simply as its own movie. It did an amazing job holding that perfect level of suspense for over two hours (surprised it was this long), and I was most impressed a movie driven almost entirely by children could stay so gripping and powerful. Apart from Pennywise, adults had very, very little dialogue, and that turned out to be a good thing.

I guess it's no suprise to anyone here, but I really didn't follow what happened at all.

Specifically the Diane-Cooper sex scene and the alternate names on the note. I don't understand the significance of those. Also, did Cooper essentially erase Laura Palmer from the timeline to prevent her own murder? I guess I'm a mental lightweight.

I remember the names James and Linda being mentioned earlier in the show (can't remember if it was a 1990s or 2017 episode). They were especially memorable to me because they're the names of the parents of my brother's childhood best friend who committed suicide.

Nelson_Mandela posted...
Honestly the most satisfying ending was the end of fire walk with me. It's stunningly beautiful.

Anything that featured young Laura Palmer had me almost entranced, especially this scene

I don't think I've ever seen an actress pull off looks that terrifying.

A few months ago, I made a topic asking you guys about Caribbean travel. Let me give a little background on that.

At my last job, I had an 8-month period where I traveled weekly. As such, I built up a ton of Southwest airlines points - enough that my vacation travel has been free for the last 18 months. Additionally, I earned the Companion Pass for my girlfriend, meaning that anywhere I fly, she flies with me for free (minus taxes and fees). I've taken pretty good advantage of this over the past year (Nashville, California multiple times, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, and most recently San Pedro in Belize). Her Companion Pass expires on 12/31/2017. I want to squeeze as much as I can out of it.

We're tentatively scheduled for Orlando/Disney in October (hopefully she can get the time off), but I want one last Caribbean vacation before the end of the year. The Caribbean is the furthest away Southwest flies, so it makes the most economical sense for me to travel there as often as I can. Here are the locations I'm weighing for a final December vacay:

Havana, Cuba
Montego Bay, Jamaica
Nassau, Bahamas
Grand Cayman Island
Turks and Caicos Islands

I'm looking more for an island getaway, but I'm still considering Havana because it's such a famous (and alluring) city for exploration. If anyone has been to any of these places, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I remember a couple of Board 8ers recommended Belize last time, and it was an AWESOME vacation. I'd be thrilled if you can do it again. =)

Oh and I still think the best value buffet is the M Resort's in south Las Vegas. Weekday lunch is $16 last I checked, and it's all you can drink. Yeah the booze selection is crappy, but they have beer, wine, and cider and you can sit there for 2 hours getting slammed. And the food is actually good!

I’ve tried to “win” at cheap buffets before, and generally it’s not worth the effort. If the place is cheap to begin with, then whatever “premium” items they have are of decidedly non-premium quality. Sure, if you’re throwing down $50 for the Caesars Palace buffet, it’s stupid to fill up on bread and mac n cheese, but for $7, just get what you like.

Although if you're determined, the advice already given is the way to go: drink only water and focus on the meats.

Stepping back, it's not even that great of a product. Wired controllers in 2017, and it doesn't have a lot of the console's best games. The potential of cracking the entire SNES library and wireless controllers (can they do that?) is way better than what Nintendo's actually selling.

Not too surprised to hear these allegations that Trump treats his Secret Service agents like actual servants. This is nothing but my own conjecture, but I have to believe that other Presidents were hit with a moment of realization when they thought about an agent’s duty to protect themselves and their children, at which point those agents because something much more meaningful than employees. I also believe that moment of realization will never occur to Trump.

I've barely played ME1 and never touched the rest of the series, but I do feel like the video game industry was robbed of having essentially its own type of Star Wars trilogy. I don't feel bad about EA and Bioware making whatever mistakes they make -- they have to own that -- but the series was incredibly important at one point and this was the closest to anything touching Ocarina of Time for being like THE game saga-experience to ever play. I wanted that for the industry and I wonder when we'll ever approach that again.

I honestly feel like ME1-3 did give people that. It wasn't as universally beloved as Star Wars, but it's still easily the most "nostalgic" collection of games from the modern era. ME1 isn't even ten years old at the moment, but it feels so much older because players got so damn emotionally invested in the games, and THAT didn't truly happen until ME2. By the time ME became unquestionably relevant in the industry, we had already had a dozen GameFAQs contests. Most fans have only been playing the games for like seven years, but it feels like we've been talking about them for 20!
