Not too surprised to hear these allegations that Trump treats his Secret Service agents like actual servants. This is nothing but my own conjecture, but I have to believe that other Presidents were hit with a moment of realization when they thought about an agent’s duty to protect themselves and their children, at which point those agents because something much more meaningful than employees. I also believe that moment of realization will never occur to Trump.

They wrote that I was a CIA operative, funded by (choose your own adventure) George Soros, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, the IMF/World Bank, and/or a global Jewish mafia to orchestrate the Charlottesville attack in order to turn the general public against the alt-right. I had staged the attack and then worked with MSNBC and other outlets controlled by the left to spread propaganda. They claimed my ultimate goal was to start a race war that would undermine and then overthrow Donald Trump on behalf of the “Deep State.”

Yeah Trump is doing an amazing job at continuing the powerless victim angle despite being the President of the United States

When he starts claiming that decisions he directly made and that he can directly undo are holding him back from making America great, and people believe him, I'm not sure what else to do.

The objectives, according to Trump:

"Obliterating ISIS" and "preventing the Taliban from taking over Afghanistan." To achieve these goals, Trump said he would expand authorities for the US to target criminal and terrorist networks in Afghanistan.

Strengthen Afghan security forces. He noted that "the stronger the Afghan security forces become, the less we will have to do."

If we weren't doing these things there already, what exactly were we doing?

I'm curious to see the response to Trump's Afghanistan announcement tonight. in theory it's more of a traditional republican line -- and you can argue, a Hillary line -- but the Bannon wing of the party has to be going crazy, right? or is it okay now that it's Trump?

Going through July's headlines and found this:

http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/05/politics/trump-salary-antietam/index.html

Pretty much, Donald's first paycheck went to honoring the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.

Seeing that after the Charlottesville white supremacy rally recently and being reminded he was the last Republican candidate to weigh in on the Confederate flag after the Roof massacre, I had a moment of clarity: a nation that honors their divisive losers increases his chances for his own legacy to live beyond him in even his worst-case scenarios. We know about his selfishness already, I just think this angle may have some weight too. "Don't let the value of hindsight remove my value to your future" sort of thing.

Also, we see more of a trend than a one-time accident that Donald defends the Confederacy. It's still odd for me to see a New York millionaire be the biggest advocate for the Confederacy in a long time; I'm unconvinced he actually cares for the stars and bars plus I still think he has bigoted thought processes, but he's showing some Confederate consistency and his fanbase was more receptive to these arguments than other Republican candidates were.

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2017/07/these-countries-have-the-most-positive-influence-on-the-world/

A new Ipsos MORI poll of 18,000 respondents across 25 nations shows that only 40% think the US has a positive influence on the world stage. That's less than China at 49% and not far ahead of Russia at 35%.

The US ‘approval’ rating has dropped by 24 percentage points since last year's survey.

Canada is seen as setting the best example with 81% of respondents saying it has a positive influence on world affairs. Australia and Germany complete the top three.

I don't know what the "right" strategy for our military is in Afghanistan, but I just think it's pretty fucked up that we'll soon have soldiers fighting in a war that began before they were born, and we aren't much closer to "victory", whatever that even means in this case, than we were when we started.

On another note, a good piece on the rise of right wing extremism and how early efforts to deal with it were shut down due to partisan politics:

You know how we assert that republican politicians are great at convincing voters to vote against their own interests?

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/08/ben-carson-hud-secretary.html

The Trump cutswould mean that several programs would be eliminated entirely, including the home program, which offers seed money for affordable-housing initiatives, and the $3 billion Community Development Block Grant program that Carla Hills, Ford’s HUD secretary, had praised to Carson at the dinner. In New York, CDBG helped pay for, among many things, housing-code enforcement, the 311 system, and homeless shelters for veterans. But the grants were also relied on in struggling small towns, where they paid for sidewalks, sewer upgrades, and community centers. In Glouster, Ohio, a tiny coal town that went for Trump by a single vote after going for Obama two to one in 2012, officials were counting on the grants to replace a bridge so weak that the school bus couldn’t cross it, forcing kids from one part of town to cluster along a busy road for pickup. “Without those funds, it would just cripple this area,” said Nathan Simons, who administers the grants for the surrounding region. HUD, for all its shrinking stature and insecurity complex, has over time worked its way into the fabric of ailing communities throughout the country, a role that has grown only larger as so much of Middle America has suffered decline, and as the capacity of so many state and local governments has withered amid dwindling tax bases and civic disengagement. On my travels through the Midwest I’ve seen how many federally subsidized housing complexes there are on the edges of small towns and cities, places very far from the Bronx or the South Side of Chicago. People living in these places rely on a functioning, minimally competent HUD no less than do the Section 8 voucher recipients in Jared Kushner’s low-income complexes in Baltimore. In an age of ever-widening income inequality, the Great Society department actually plays an even more vital role than when it was conceived.

Emphasis mine.
