| Anteaterking 12/29/18 9:24:43 PM #235 | I think a part of it isn't even anyone trying to be disingenuous, but rather that some people compare themselves to GOP policies from the 2000s and Democratic policies from 2018 and think they're moderate because they're between those. That's why the policies that these "moderates" always point to for their moderate bonafides are gay marriage, marijuana legalization, the wars that didn't go well are bad, *insert failed GOP policy* is bad, etc. But they don't think that the wars that haven't gone bad yet justified for the same reason are bad or that modern incarnations of those GOP policies are bad or that we should do anything to protect gay rights in the marketplace. --- |

The easiest way to tell whether someone is truly moderate or not when they do this "equal opportunity" bashing of both sides is to see the severity of the things that they call out. Often times (in 2018 at least), these people will criticize liberals for a huge swath of policy positions and then balance that out by attacking Trump with really surface level conduct/decorum type things. They act like they're attacking both sides, but that's not really what happens. E.g. Coffeebeanz was (is?) really bad about this. She was quick to call out Trump on the easy stuff to call out Trump on to act like she had moderate bonafides when she was trashes liberals for wanting to investigate an alleged sexual misconduct by a supreme court nominee. Basically if you start a lot of sentences with "I hate Trump, but liberals are wrong...", you're more likely a conservative than you are moderate. --- |

But I think along the lines of what Balrog is saying, the fact that you're getting these dates in the first place means that the 95% confidence interval of your attractiveness based on your photo(s) on your online dating profile plus the personality you give off through your texts/messages passes the bar for trying to date. If you were really more charming in person, you're suggesting that you're so much uglier in person that it's outside even the low end of expectations AND it's also enough to outweigh your personality and additional charm. That just doesn't seem likely, unless your photos are incredibly misleading (which, if they are you should change them, unless you like just getting first dates). My guess is that you aren't as charming in person as you think and it's possible that something about what you consider your charm is turning people off. After all, acting stereotypically "suave" can make someone feel like they are being charming while not really landing. --- |

Because unless it's completely blind, I can't imagine their physical impression of you changes dramatically before and after the first date. It's much more likely that in person your personality/charm isn't enough to get a second date, whereas you might find it easier over text and stuff. --- |

| Anteaterking 12/28/18 1:35:38 AM #29 | Just glancing around: 1. It seems weird to call a generally snarky, satire site like Wonkette "nonsense damaging to public discourse". I don't really feel like it tries to fit the role of "news" the same way most of the other outlets on here do. 2. Some things like "Infowars" are placed to far to the right. In general, I think "alt-right" is conflated with being politically far right, which I think is inaccurate. 3. CNN should be more neutral. One shouldn't conflate pro-decorum attacks on Trump as being inherently a left leaning thing. 4. Generally, I haven't dug deep into the methodology, but the fact that you get essentially an upside down U is an indication that the methodology itself is skewed. They say analysis is "worse" than just reporting facts, but that's not really what I think of when it comes to quality journalism. Otherwise most local news outlets would be scoring in the yellow/green squares, despite the fact that lots of local news sucks. It just happens to be mostly fact reporting and without clear bias, but with a lack of quality in most other aspects. Because of this the chart inherently builds in a dependence between non-centrist political beliefs and low quality scores. I mean, hypothetically I could make a far left/far right news outlet with high journalistic standards which provides news. But it seems that the only way mediabiaschart would be able to determine your bias is through pieces that are mainly analysis, and as I said, they've set up "more analysis" to be bad. --- |
