so will GoFundMe refund the money when this goes bust or does the organizer just get to take the money and run?

GoFundMe isn't like Kickstarter, where the default is that you set a goal and if it's not funded then no one pays. Since GoFundMe is set up more like charity, you get to pocket the money even if you don't raise all of it (this makes sense from their typical usage, since often times the "goal" is a nebulous thing and just helping out with bills, doing something nice, etc. don't have strict budgets).

The organizer can choose to return the funds and it's set up so that refunding your backers isn't hard, but he would have to choose to do so. Right now, he's claiming that if he doesn't get the money he'll refund all of it. My guess is that he's not going to outright scam people, but instead of returning the money he'll probably donate it to something dumb

k, so what's your counter argument except "sounds awful." Security can't be the issue, that'd be the primary concern with releasing a digital government correspondence device. There would be way more voters, more of the younger ones that are tired of the bs politics that exist right now, it'd completely transform the political spectrum. Information about those running for political positions would also be available on it at the tap of a thumbnail and we'd get much more precise voting.

1. On a practical level, if you've ever had to deal with replacing a birth certificate or social security card, it is by no means a hassle free process. Now you're talking about giving each person a functioning electronic device that hooks up to a network to provide you information. Who is troubleshooting this for voters? What happens when people lose their voting machines? This has all of the actual electronic problems of regular voting without the centralized locations to gather the problems.

2. You can't say "Security wouldn't be an issue because they wouldn't release it if it wasn't secure" because that's just hand waving a primary concern. There are lots of security concerns and part of the problem is that it's not enough to just have something secure. You also have to convince regular citizens that it's secure.

3. If you think that people are concerned with dead people voting now, imagine if they don't even have to show up at any point to verify they are still alive. Vote selling also becomes much easier as well as other vote taking tactics.

4. Young voters aren't turned off from voting because they have to leave their couch. It has to do with candidate selection, which isn't going to go away just because you don't have to go to a polling place.

Those are some initial things.

I threw it out because I don't think it should be equated with Afghanistan. Really we should be considering these all separate from each other (Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, etc.) Generalizations about the "Middle East" are usually bad takes because it really does vary from country to country.

But I'm talking about the War on Terror, which literally is the umbrella that all of this falls under. It's not like if Somalian militants blew up a building in Florida that I would say "Well, I mean look at all of our success in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each country varies wildly, so I'd say the War on Terror itself is still a success".

Sativa_Rose posted...
The rise of ISIS corresponds with US withdrawal at the end of 2011. Had that not happened, you would not have had the ISIS caliphate which would have likely prevented some/all of the terrorist attacks in Europe.

The troop surge (2007) was in response to a rise in ISIS. Sure, it wasn't until 2014 that you started getting talk of a worldwide caliphate, but I'm not just talking about when it was at its peak.

Sativa_Rose posted...
The War on Terror really began before 9/11 anyways, but 9/11 certainly brought it to the forefront. You had the WTC bombings in 1993, the US embassy bombings in Kenya/Tanzania in 1998, and the USS Cole attack in 2000, for example.

So basically I think you are wrong in thinking that the root of the problem is actually the War on Terror rather than the terrorists themselves. If we withdraw, the problem will get worse. We can't withdraw and go back to some pre-terrorism world that never actually existed.

I'm not even claiming that we are the sole motivation for terrorists. I just think there's little to no rationale for claiming that the WoT has been a success or that we have protected America by waging it.

The next thing to remember is that the War on Terror was never a US-only thing. We have a lot of partners in this. Look at Europe right now. Terrorism in Europe corresponded with the rise of ISIS; when ISIS was at its peak, terrorism in Europe was also at its peak. Since ISIS has been diminished, so has the rate of attacks.

ISIS/Al Qaeda/etc. attacks in Europe increased after we began the war on terror, so I'm not sure that's any indication that we're succeeding. ISIS's power increased while we were active in Iraq.

Sativa_Rose posted...
We really shouldn't be including the 2003-2011 Iraq War in that, as that was something planned well before 9/11 for reasons that ultimately did not have a major connection to the War on Terrorism.

The War on Terror officially includes the Iraq War. Those were the motivations sold to the public. The internal justifications for it doesn't allow you to pretend that it's somehow distinct, especially since our actions there are partially responsible for the rise of ISIS , who you consider an adversary of ours in the War on Terror and we fought members of in Iraq.

Sativa_Rose posted...

We definitely drew in a lot of foreign jihadists into Afghanistan by having US forces there, killed quite a few of them to boot. We were a convenient target and symbol of the nation they despise with their very being, Afghanistan is a lot easier for them to reach than the CONUS after all. I consider not having a major terrorist (at least by foreigners) attack committed on our soil since 9/11 to be a major success.

So it's been 17 years and we haven't had an attack. But what was the last major terrorist attack committed by foreign terrorists on our soil before 9/11?

Do you think there would have been one if we hadn't gone to war? Why?

Also, American casualties in the war on terror have been 2-3 9/11s already at this point. So unless you think we've prevented at least 4 9/11s, we're just breaking even or behind at this point.

Adoption is a choice made with informed consent by both parties. It really has no relation to someone raising another's child without their knowledge because the mother didn't want to take responsibility for her choices.

I'm only bringing up adoption to point out that people's notion of "parent" obviously leaves room for non-biological parents.

What does it mean to be someone's father? It's obviously not legality, as these people claim they wouldn't be the father even if their name is on the birth certificate. It's obviously not just blood either, as these same people accept an adopted person as being their child. You can combine these into some wishy washy category of "It's a child that I accept as being my child" but that seems to just be pushing the actual issue off.

I strongly disagree. She is the one responsible for the situation.

If she hadn't cheated, the situation wouldn't exist.

If she hadn't lied, the situation wouldn't exist.

If she told dude from the start that it isn't, or might not be, his child - he could leave then, before the child has a chance to know him, or he could decide to stay anyway.

If he does leave, or even if he decides to stay, the mother could (should) introduce the child to its real father.

Bad things will probably happen to you in life and you're still going to be responsible for how you respond to them. I don't think anyone in this topic is saying "You have to stay with the wife who cheated on you for the kids!". If your response to something bad happening to you is to turn around and retaliate against your children, you aren't absolved of that response.

Also, that's not the child's real father. It may be their biological father, but that's it.

I just don't understand cheating. Why not just tell the person you're with that you don't love them anymore, then go be a slut? Either way they're gonna get hurt, but at least if you cut things off before sleeping around, you won't risk bringing some STD home and not only breaking their heart but ruining their life as well.

Idk, maybe I'm just not a shitty person.

A lot of cheating happens because Person A isn't getting something from their relationship with Person B that they want, and they think by cheating that they can get that from Person C without sacrificing the parts of their relationship with Person B that they want. So breaking up with B and replacing them with C isn't a better situation for them.

I get what Boogie is saying. Being a YouTuber has to be terrifying as f***. Imagine going into work everyday with an insane boss that you never see and who could randomly fire you at any minute. "Hey, I just got a raise! Oh, I'm fired." A year of that would drive anyone bonkers. Imagine not knowing if two months from now if you'll be able to make your house payment. Imagine living with that uncertainty every single day. Your nerves would be shot to hell.

That's a bad perspective to have on that kind of work though. YouTube is more like a "gigging" job or an independent contractor than it is an 8-5 office job. The actual calculus you do when determining your price, whether you can make your house payment, etc. keeps the inconsistency in mind. When I used to work sound on film sets, my day rate was really high, but it was set high because I knew that I wasn't going to be working five days a week every week.

BeyondWalls posted...
People are unsympathetic to YouTubers, like "go and get a real job." But where do you go if you're in the online entertainment industry? It's not like YouTube has a real competitor. "f*** this s***, I'm going to work at Dailymotion." People expect YouTubers to just abandon their entertainment career. But is that fair? Imagine if that attitude translated to your career. "You don't like the way the hospital is run, Doctor? Then get a real job at McDonalds then."

They're unsympathetic because those people during the spurts where they are succeeding make much more money than the average person does. The same market forces that give you a lot of money for a popular video are the ones that give you pennies when they aren't popular. It's like having the friend who brags about how much more money they're making now being an independent contractor who then wants sympathy when tax time comes and they owe all of the taxes that are normally taken out of paychecks. You can't be like "Man I like the good things about the job, but not the drawbacks that enable those good things".
