This was about as big as you could expect tbh.

SCOTUS has an effective national cap on punitive damages (damages beyond the amount needed to compensate plaintiff, intended as punishment for defendant) of 10x the compensatory damages. In this case, that would be 100 million. The jury decided to award 5 million. Virginia apparently has a hard cap of 350k.

Really weird that they awarded Amber anything, honestly, since they actively proved no damages whatsoever for Waldman's statements, but this is an enormous win for Johnny. This feels like a compromise decision though.

I assume they had a person or a couple of people that were holding out, so the rest compromised with one of Amber's claims to appease them.

Justice prevailed though. An abuser got a deserved comeuppance. And I hope this gives more abuse victims the courage to speak up against their abusers, the ones that society tries to protect.

Amber's statement is so ridiculously distorted. She thinks she's the victim still and that this does damage to abuse victims LOL.

Johnny winning will give courage to abuse victims because Amber reminds actual abuse victims of their abusers. The violence, the victim-blaming, the yelling, the "go to the press, see if they believe you" nonsense, the threats...

The primary issue of this trial was always how men who claim abuse are often laughed out of a building and not taken seriously at all. Most people were not taking this trial seriously at the beginning.

And not only did he claim abuse, he proved it.

Anyone taking it beyond that is getting the wrong message.

Unfortunately this is inflamed further when so much of the "right" people have their heads stuck treating the case as a culture war against the bad people, making them give undue sympathy to Heard's abusive actions and gathering around her as the victim.

People celebrate the "right" thing for the wrong reasons all the time. This is nothing new.

Yeah sounds like Depp has had a troubled life from everything I saw. Not like he was perfect here but Heard really came off as cold and calculating tbh.

It's almost like basing your opinion off of other people's opinions instead of what actually happens is extremely flawed or something.

I've definitely seen a lot of this, but it's only natural when you look at the blatantly misogynistic details some of the diehard watchers of this trial couldn't help but add to their commentary.

When I hopped off the "yeah, fuck her" train was when people genuinely wondered if Amber snorted cocaine in the middle of a televised trial, and when it was pointed out how psychotic even thinking that was possible was, people were like "we don't think she actually did it, but it WAS suspicious!" If you don't think she did it, why was it suspicious? My god.

I mean, there are reports of actual abuse victims who are now not moving forward with their own trials due to how this played out, so acting like this is an inflection point to help abuse victims when it basically turned into clout-chasing clickbait online frenzy is probably not the most accurate statement, regardless of Amber Heard's guilt.

I mean, if Johnny truly becomes an advocate for domestic violence victims then maybe something good culturally will come of this, but since he couldn't even be arsed to show up today I kinda doubt he cares much beyond getting to work in Hollywood again.

I feel if people feel less inclined to pursue their own trials because of this trial that is their problem not anyone watching this trial. I think the victim winning will help other victims speak out. Abuse victims side with Johnny because Amber reminds them of their abusers. More people will speak up now.

Would agree with this. I feel we'll be getting a lot of loud voices from people who never paid any actual attention the entire time.

And if people don't bother to notice the actual abuser lost, that's on them.

It sucks that some terrible people will be galvanized by this decision, but Heard was so blatantly a physical and emotional abuser that I could never see the jury's decision as a mistake. The repercussions for our society of such a clear case going the other way would be a lot worse than what we have to live with now.

I don't believe anyone actually thought she was snorting cocaine, it was just funny. This whole trial has had many silly and hilarious moments. The way she blew her nose was goofy looking so yeah of course people would make jokes about it.

I mean my larger point is that nothing about this trial is going to end up improving things for actual abuse victims, unlike some claims in this topic. A large part of society did not treat it with the seriousness it deserved, when you have streamers talking about how they went from single digit view counts for their gaming streams to thousands for live streaming the courtroom. It became a race to dunk on Heard for views, of such low tier analysis of courtroom proceedings. This is not a knock against Biscuit, he was mostly fair despite any bias and he sure as fuck isn't chasing clout on a dying video game character contest message board, but as a whole there's a reason The Onion made a dig at this whole thing.

Right result.

I just have a really hard time believing this, Depp won his suit because he meticulously documented a ton of shit and had better lawyers, and he's in a pretty unique position to come forward as a well liked public figure. How applicable is that to most abuse victims?

The only ways I see this case moving the needle is on the public reaction, and frankly I think the memification of it has been insufferably bad in a way that's only gonna have bad effects.

If there are women who now feel less confident about coming forward, that is on Amber Heard and all the people in the media who refused to accurately report on the trial. Their stubbornness to admit they were duped by Heard's lies is what allowed the right-wing dipshits to seize the narrative. Hopefully now some of them will come to their senses.

I think there's a fine line between the trial itself and the verdict.

The trial was not something I took seriously and I took great pleasure in watching it because of how wild it was. This was the best new reality show in years. It was hilarious constantly and thus I was just watching it for the entertainment.

The VERDICT is a different thing. The fact that the victim triumphed over the abuser will give confidence to others to go forward. If they aren't going forward because of this trial, it may be because they don't have evidence and they now see how it works. But they still shouldn't be afraid to speak up like Johnny did.

Amber was the one with meticulous documentation of staged photos and made up stories that she tried to fit conveniently in timelines where she claimed there were no witnesses. And she LIED.

Johnny just reacted in kind based on photos that existed through paparazzi. Amber lost because she had bad facts, not bad lawyers. Even if there was no Elaine, they still would have had a hard time winning.

Depp's team was great, absolutely. But to act like it wasn't an uphill climb to get to this verdict is nonsense given how hard defamation cases are to prove.
