They haven't catered to moderates. You have 2 moderates barely holding back 48 leftists or people who are supporting leftism currently. Moderates feel they are under siege and being persecuted. After so many decades of unchecked power, moderates will feel anything less than domination means they are being attacked. And here, even ultra-centrist Biden is pushing leftist ideas.

i wouldn't say cheering/applauding is the same thing as laughing. cheering/applauding is psychotic sephyg-ish "i'm glad that this person i hate is suffering" behavior. laughing can be as innocuous as thinking the irony of the situation is funny.

The bill doesn't do anything to combat the one thing R state legislatures are doing that could seriously be called "killing democracy" (i.e. creating the possibility of sending alternative slates of electors). The other voting restrictions (and the intent behind them) are bad, but the evidence seems to point to them not being particularly effective (on the flipside, VA made it way easier to vote and Youngkin won anyway). By setting up existential stakes on a fight they were obviously going to lose I wouldn't be surprised if the Dems end up suppressing their own votes the same way Trump did in the Georgia Senate race (i.e. if you believe everything's rigged anyway you're gonna be less likely to vote).

You're confusing killing democracy with Republicans winning elections. The fact that Republicans might be wrong about suppressing votes making it easier for them to win doesn't change that their strategy is explicitly anti-democratic.

They're not very effective in suppressing votes either. Like, I agree that it's bad, and it would be good to pass a law to fix it, but the severity of the problem is very relevant for determining what should be prioritized and how much political capital it's worth spending to get it done. In this case they knew (or at least should have known) that they weren't going to get all 50 votes to change the filibuster, so all this accomplished was to make the Dems look impotent (just like all of the public BBB infighting).

What do you mean "spending political capital?" They didn't spend or do anything, unless you're arguing that by not engaging with voting rights or BBB they could have passed some other major bill or executive policy which I think is patently untrue. Unless they actively try to do things they'll look impotent anyways.

By political capital I mean Biden and Dems are hemorrhaging approval and don't have anything to show for it. The biggest reason is that covid is still going on, but public infighting and appearing to deprioritize many of the issues most salient to the American people doesn't help.

One thing they need to be doing more on, for example, is trying to fight inflation. I don't think Congress can necessarily do much on that, but Biden could do stuff like lift tariffs and focus more on trying to fix supply chain issues. As far as Congress goes I still think they can ultimately pass some form of BBB, but like it or not when you only have 50 votes you need every one of them. Trying to get cute with budget tricks and then acting shocked when Manchin doesn't go for it just makes them look like idiots. It does look like they may have finally realized this and are now moving towards the "put together the maximal package Manchin will go for and pass it" strategy.

On election stuff I think they actually probably can get an Electoral Count Act fix on a bipartisan basis. Yes, settling for that is not ideal, but it would protect against a very dire threat and if that's all they can get they should take it.

I understand Biden's agenda is hamstrung because senator 50 and senator 49 are just republicans in like half the states, but the "appeal" of Biden was that he could work across the aisle and Bernie wouldn't be able to get republicans to agree on anything and blah blah blah.

If we are going to get all this garbage anyway, it would've been better to have a president more willing to do good stuff through executive order.

Biden won due to electability and his ability to convince moderate Dems and independents to vote for him.

And once again Bernie wasn't even close in the primaries so this argument is pointless to rehash when the fault that this fell short lies entirely on the shoulders of Sinema, Manchin, and 50 other Senators.
