I want more Metroid.

We all want more Metroid. The notification tone on my phone is the Item Collection tune from Super Metroid.

One Christmas I gave out copies of Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii as Christmas gifts to all of my gamer friends. I love the series.

Another 2d Metroid would be awesome, but we'll get Prime 4 from Retro before we get another 2d Metroid game.

A sequel to Fusion... I don't know, call it Fusion 2, would be great, but Nintendo doesn't care what any of us think, and they do their best to kill fun, little slices at a time. (Animal Crossing is not fun.)

Would rather see a Zero Mission-esque remake of Super Metroid (although I guess that doesn't have nearly as far to go as the original Metroid did)

I don't. I'm mostly apathetic about Metroid in general.

I played the original one on the NES and was mostly meh about it. And I've never really given enough of a shit about the franchise to bother playing any of the others.

I'm not a huge fan of backtrack style gameplay in general, and I went off platformers as a genre decades ago. So Metroidvanias as a whole are sort of a turn-off for me now.

Going back now, knowing what we know about platforming and backtracking, having maps, that sort of thing...yeah, OG Metroid is painful.

Being an 80s kid raised on Nintendo Hard and inscrutable password systems, when drawing maps by hand in notebooks was the norm...Metroid was totally rad. I'd even go so far to say it was bitchin.

For something so early in the NES period, it was downright revolutionary.

At that point, you had 3 types of games (ignoring the finicky peripheral light gun/ROB/track pad games. There were the janky single screen sports games, there were the single screen arcade ports like og Mario Bros, Popeye, ice climbers, donkey Kong, punch out, excitebike, etc, and then you had games like Metroid, LoZ, kid icarus, ikari warriors, jackal...etc. games like faxanadu, battletoads, clash at demonhead, battle.of Olympus, Athena...those were still a few years off.

At the time, Metroid was entirely its own thing and hadn't crossed paths with Castlevania yet to get the chocolate in the peanut butter so to speak. There wasn't anything else like it when it came out except maybe LoZ. And LoZ at least had rudimentary clues. Metroid had this feeling of total isolation. You were completely on your own.

That being said, comparing something like Metroid to Metroid 2 or super Metroid doesn't quite compare to say, Link's Awakening or LttP (we're ignoring LoZ2 for now because that's way closer to Battle of Olympus or Athena...and yes I know Olympus' dev team had a lot of overlap with LoZ2).

LOZ2 is still my favorite of the series tbh. Battle of Olympus was good, but not as good.

I always loved side scrollers and especially side scrolling rpgs. I found LoZ2 had the highest difficulty as well (but quite fun because of that).

A lot of the problems with Zelda 2 would be fixed in a remake by not arming you with a pocketknife and calling it a sword and doing something to mitigate the exponential difficulty spike going into Death Mountain so early on.

A lot of the problems with Zelda 2 would have been fixed by calling it something other than Zelda 2.

A LOT of the negative reaction to it at the time stemmed from people going in expecting "LoZ again, only more so" and getting something radically different. Ironically, I've always thought it was a much better game than LoZ1 was.

If they'd given it a completely different name, it probably wouldn't have sold as well, but its reputation in retrospect would be much better.

On the plus side, it ate most of that backlash, so that by the time LttP came out, people were more prepared for something different and were more able to accept LttP on its own terms rather than condemning it for not being LoZ.

Wow, I have rarely ever heard someone agree with me that 2 was better than 1. I absolutely LOVED 1 when it came out mind you, but over all I enjoyed 2 more. Alot of people consider it their least favorite.

I do wish they would remake it though, or make a new side scroller zelda game but updated for modern times (basically CSoTN zelda style hehe).

Doubt it'll happen now, since everyone is going towards either 3d games or VR games in the future sadly.

This, it was literally a LoZ+, and going forward they never did anything remotely like AoL and rarely speak of it to this day except as a puzzle piece in the batshit timeline shuffles they do Everytime they make a new Zelda.

I'm really confused as how developers for Microsoft make any money when they put every new release on Ganepass?

Game pass is 9.99 a month and 14.99 for Game pass Ultimate a month.

If you make a game, let's say, Ori and The Will of the Wisp, and the gane is on Gamepass, and it's down loaded 2 million times, Microsoft gets that money. I suppose they could pay you if you're a first party studio, but if you're independent, then you have to rely on word of mouth sales. Maybe you sell 1 mollion copies in the first 3 months of release because Ganepass stole a majority of your sales, 1 million at 40 bucks a piece is 40 million, but by the time you divide that with cost, overhead, development, payroll, and bonuses, you may break even or make a small profit, which you then need to invest in more games and paying people for your next game.

Gears of War 5 was downloaded 5 million times on Gamepass last year. 5 million at 65 bucks a piece is a lot more than maybe the 2 million they sold individually, really 7 million copies total. It would make sense to sell the 7 million individually and make a major of the profits without Microsoft involved.

It just doesn't seem like a viable business strategy for the long run if you're thinking of working with Microsoft. However, I could be wrong.

Microsoft either pays a lump sum or compensates the dev for the copies downloaded. I'm not sure what you're trying to compare. Is $40 the MSRP? Because devs don't make much of that either. The retailer takes a ton of that and then the publisher gets their share.

Apple being jerks and limiting apps, access, and overall products on their Apple Store, twhich is something they've always done, today Apple took down Fortnite, and Epic sued the hell put of them for unfair business practices.

The removal had something to do with the in app purhaes and Applwe not getting their slice of the pie. Considering that Fortnite is free, except the cost of skins the player can purchase, Epic circumventing Apple is awesome and funny.

Apple really does need to be taken down a peg; as just last week Apple prevented Microsoft from putting Xcloud streaming on their IPhones citing security reasons, (bullcrap) but it was because they wouldn't get any money from the games being sold or steamed, and Apple just can't allow that to happen.

Epic just said F you, and good for them for not just rolling over to big bad Apple.

Updateto the News Desk!

This just in to the Geek Nrws Desk. Google has just joined Apple in removing Fortnite from their App store.

No one really knows how much Apple or Google charge for every purchase of a game or in app purchase, but I've heard rumors of at least 30% per transaction.

If you still want to play Fortnite (My nieces love the game and play every single day with their friends) you can download it on your Android phones directly from The Epic Play Shore. (I don't play the game, but I do hope that these app developers don't continue to get screwed by both Apple and Google.)

Oh, and to crib from Wave's new gimmick:

"And in other news, it seems as if there may indeed be a silver lining to the fact that Disney's Star Wars movies have been metaphorical hot liquid feces with no redeeming qualities whatsover. In the wake of the total collapse of an entire franchise, Disney has seemingly panicked and begun work on a new Tron sequel.

After the modest success of Tron: Legacy ten years ago, there was some talk of a planned sequel, bringing the total number of movies to three. It was further suggested that Cillian Murphy's small uncredited cameo in the film was deliberately seeded to help establish the third film's eventual villain. But with the rising success of the MCU and the acquisition of the Star Wars franchise, there were multiple allegations that Disney no longer felt the need for a "male-oriented" sci-fi franchise, as they now had that demographic covered via comic books and space wizards. Tron, as a somewhat niche cult-favorite property, was apparently moved to the back-burner, with no intentions to continue. It was, of course, at this point that long-suffering Tron fans began to joke that it would take another 27 years before they'd see the next sequel.

Now, however, with the MCU peaking and The Rise of Skywalker retroactively murdering several childhoods, it appears Disney may be desperate to find potential alternate means of reaping male audience dollars - or, at the very least, sell more Disney+ memberships. Disney has recently announced that they are indeed moving forward with Tron 3, with Garth Davis - formerly known for directing the critically acclaimed "Lion" - at the helm. It has also been rumored that Jared Leto will be playing a major role, though whether as the protagonist or antagonist is currently unknown.

Barring any future delays, cancellations, or other production-related issues, the film could be in theaters by 2023, making for a gap between Tron 2 and Tron 3 of only thirteen years, only half as long as that between the first two. At this pace of acceleration, it might only require 6-7 years before a hypothetical Tron 4 could be produced. At which point the graph of production over time would start to look like the exact inverse of George RR Martin's work on the Song of Ice and Fire novels.

This has been a Geek News update.

They've been talking about making once since the 1990s. Every few years it comes up, and someone mentions it's still being planned. It's apparently doomed to be stuck in development hell forever.

The real irony is, it's based on a book, and the book was part of a series. So if they did remake it and the remake did well enough, it could jumpstart a new franchise (which is what studios today have wet dreams about). They've got at least four books and a bunch of short stories/comic books they could adapt, so someone could even spin it off into a TV show on something like HBO or Netflix (though the last time they tried to turn it into a TV show, it tanked).

tbh, now that HBO and the world has seen that kind of a model is viable, I kinda wonder if we'll get more series like it (specifically high-budget productions where each book in a series becomes a season).

I finally watched Birds of Prey last night.

It was a metric **** ton better than Batman Vs Superman, Justice League, and Suicide Squad. The movie felt like everyone in front of the camera was having fun, and every thing behind the camera made sense. (Script, choreography, editing, etc) Obi-Wan was having so much fun as Black Mask!

Granted, the bar was low to begin with as I didn't love their crown jewelry of the DCEU, Wonder Woman either, and Aquaman was passable. So, I guess my expectations were low from the start, and they cleared that very low bar.

If anyone else has seen the film tell me if I'm wrong and what you think!

My one takeaway from Birds of Prey was how damn hot were Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Margot Robbie that Mary Elizabeth Winstead ends up looking like the frumpy one?
