On the plus side, it ate most of that backlash, so that by the time LttP came out, people were more prepared for something different and were more able to accept LttP on its own terms rather than condemning it for not being LoZ.

LttP was reasonably in line with the original LoZ, though. It was the sort of game people had more been expecting.
