Yeah the virus potentially causes irreparable lung damage that will affect you the rest of your life. Sounds like a bad time no matter your age.

I assume this only happens in serious symptoms cases due to pneumonia.

You can ABSOLUTELY prevent automobile accidents. Its called Safe driving and driving when mentally and physically able.

Most car accidents happen because one or both drivers perform a careless action or are in a state where they shouldnt have been driving.

Yeah, you can drive safe your whole life and one drunk driver can kill you instantly. It's called "accident" for a reason. I wasn't asserting you couldn't lessen automobile accidents, because of course, you certainly can. But to draw a comparison between that and a viral outbreak is asinine.

If they can neither confirm or deny I would guess they had not given it to patients yet but had distributed it among the staff as something they might have to do soon.

Trump is going to be announcing a deal to retool a factory for ventilators soon. It was supposed to be GM but FEMA asked them to wait a little bit so they could get the best and most efficient bid. Expect it to be announced this weekend for sure. Possibly tomorrow.

Heres an article about it

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/26/politics/michigan-coronavirus-states/index.html

Michigan, the site of one of the country's fastest growing outbreaks, has found itself unable to get an adequate supply of personal protective equipment, with lawmakers telling CNN that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer had placed an order only to be told by the company later the federal government had placed an order that would take priority.

I said this many times but maybe it was on the CE side so I will say it again.

People can't just snap their fingers and make things appear.

From what I read, there was 12,000 ventilators in stockpile. Obviously, how old or so on these are and working condition has to be checked and it be delivered to those in need.

New York is asking for 30,000 (I think they got 4,000 with another 4,000 on the way). New Orleans is asking for 5,000. Michigan for whatever. Everyone else for whatever. This isn't Aladdin. We can't snap our fingers for these things.

Obviously the producer of these is being tugged how many ways with every country in the world probably trying to get an item that isn't likely mass produced.

You can't just order companies to retool and magically have ventilators tomorrow. It takes time to retool and produce. Getting supplies and chains for materials as well as producing a quality product. GM says they can retool easily, so I assume whoever else is bidding that they are vetting can also. It isn't an instantaneous process.

Not sure if serious in that regard.

You are using hindsight to make that call which would have been met with fierce opposition to taken that emergency power invocation prior to any actual issues on the ground. I can honestly say I don't think any person as president would have ever done that.

If your criticism is that he didn't have a crystal ball and was able to see the future ala Doctor Strange then you are never going to be satisfied anyways.

Hell, he was criticized for banning travel to China in January.

It's too bad we don't have a pandemic response team in place in the government. They'd have probably been on this back when it was still in China and had the country prepared. That sure would have been a good idea to have around in case of a crisis.

I can't believe Michigan has so little amount of ventilators normally. I guess if Trump is correct that hospitals only have 3 or so each normally then I guess that makes sense, but it seems they got overwhelmed at ridiculously low levels to the point that flattening the curve is literally impossible to even help.

You are at like .00001% confirmed infected and already at your breaking point?

WHO is the one who recommended AGAINST banning travel from China in January and why everyone criticized Trump for banning travel there.

WHO said that the chance of containment laid on China and it either was contained there or become a world wide pandemic. We had little information, reliable information, on exactly how the virus worked out of China.

The fact that things got this bad in the US was not some unthinkable scenario based on what we knew in January. In fact, it was an almost inevitable scenario without a concerted effort to prevent it given what was going on in China. The federal government should absolutely have been preparing in January for this scenario, from getting a robust testing capability in place to ramping up production of PPE and ventilators. Now if we had succeeded with testing and isolating we might not have ended up needing the medical equipment, but spending billions on unnecessary equipment (some of which like the masks can be used anyway) is a much better outcome than not having the equipment when you do need it.

Again. I don't think any president ever would have done what you are saying. And, surely none of the other countries in the world did either. You are criticizing someone for not being impossibly perfect.

I have a friend in New York who is moving and threw a goodbye party today that like 30+ people attended based on the photos.

She is moving ten minutes away to a larger place.

This isn't a NYC phenomena either - there is a huge chunk of the population that absolutely refuses to be inconvenienced at all even if it means being partially responsible for someone's death.

We have a society that cares more about their freedoms than their government/country.

This is on both sides of the aisle.

This is why China could react so well to the crisis and Western nations literally can't.

Bull. I bet anyone that actually had to fight for "freedom" definitely wasn't thinking it meant going out to the "coronavirus party" or heading out to spring break in the face of a public health crisis. Freedom doesn't mean shit if there's no country to enjoy the freedom in.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/17/world/europe/coronavirus-imperial-college-johnson.html

From the guy who worked on the Imperial College Report who many based their strategy on.

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2238578-uk-has-enough-intensive-care-units-for-coronavirus-expert-predicts/

He now says both that the U.K. should have enough ICU beds and that the coronavirus will probably kill under 20,000 people in the U.K. - more than 1/2 of whom would have died by the end of the year in any case bc they were so old and sick.

Essentially, what has happened is that estimates of the viruses transmissibility have increased - which implies that many more people have already gotten it than we realize - which in turn implies it is less dangerous.

Ferguson now predicts that the epidemic in the U.K. will peak and subside within two to three weeks - last weeks paper said 18+ months of quarantine would be necessary.

Some maybe good news.
