i mean, "BUILD THE WALL" isn't exactly the same as "THERE'S A TERRIBLE PANDEMIC GOING ON AND I WANT ALL THE CHURCHES OPEN IN A FEW WEEKS." i can at least see the appeal of the former, even if i don't agree with it.
A lot of people don't realize how serious this is and want to believe that the government is doing what's necessary to protect them. Trump will also probably get credit for the successful actions of governors that are actually helping.

Unfortunately I think we're gonna have some cities go really bad, though (NYC might already be going over the edge, and the states that are currently refusing to make hard decisions might join them); at that point it's gonna be pretty fucking hard to ignore.

From what I understand, Trump set Easter as a goal date. Trying to provide hope. If we aren't ready by then, he probably sets another goal date.

I think he isn't trying to pick out a realistic goal date. I think he is trying to give the American people something to look to as hope to not despair. Then if it doesn't look realistic, he can point to why it isn't realistic anymore with current ongoing things to set a new date with another goal of hope.

I do think he is trying to figure out how to get people back to work though, just as Cuomo has pointed to the last few days with New York also.

I don't think he is going to actually have huge Easter masses though.

Sure. I think he is setting goal dates. Hoping we make them. But, if not willing to set new goals. Keep people focused with end of the light of the tunnel and hope.

Fauci has outright stated that Trump has listened to him and never overruled him at any point on serious recommendations and that Trump is trying to provide hope.

The president has listened to what I have said and to what the other people on the task force have said. When I have made recommendations, he has taken them. Hes never countered or overridden me. The idea of just pitting one against the other is just not helpful, Anthony Fauci said during an interview with WMAL on Tuesday. "I wish that would stop, and wed look ahead at the challenge we have to pull together to get over this thing.

"I was taking a purely medical, scientific standpoint, and the president was trying to bring hope to the people," Fauci said Sunday on CBS's Face The Nation. "I think there's this issue of trying to separate the two of us. There isn't fundamentally a difference there. He's coming to it from a hope, layperson standpoint. I'm coming from it from a scientific standpoint."

When asked whether Trump disregards scientific evidence or data regarding the virus presented by the task force, Fauci said, "That is completely untrue."
"I meet with him virtually every day. He listens. Ive never had a situation where I strongly suggested something to him that he rejected," Fauci told the Philadelphia radio station. "I think this idea that there is any conflict between the two of us is not based in any reality.

I think Easter is a good goal date just like the end of March was a good initial goal date.

Just as school closures have been extended, so can his goal dates. I don't see anyone complaining that they closed schools for 2 weeks to be extended another 2 weeks when realistically they probably won't re-open this year.

Let's keep the politics out of here.

It's okay to say you disagree with shit or what not and give your own opinions regarding it. But, let's not drag the whole topic into political debate.

I think what Trump and a few other idiots don't understand is that this virus isn't just going to go through New York and California and be done with. Unless we were willing to lock down completely and see the virus we have here fizzle out before opening up again, this virus has to basically spread everywhere before it will be done with. There is still a considerable region of the country that hasn't seen significant spread yet, with a few major cities included. It is going to inevitably spread to all of these places, and they all are going to have to go through the stay at home period. The time to cut this virus off was weeks ago now.

Perhaps. I think the virus itself will affect urban areas a lot worse than it could ever affect rural areas however.

I think the best course of action is to have localized shutdowns. In PA, shutting down Philadelphia and Pittsburgh probably has more effect than shutting down sparsely populated Greene county and Fayette County and etc. Do we need to kill local businesses in these rural areas to suppress the virus? It is questionable. And, it will be a good debate that we won't know the answer to ever even in hindsight.

Once the virus became so entrenched there was no stopping it. At least not with non-totalitarian efforts. So, the question is how to adapt to deal with it the best way.

yeah, the only reason why NY is such a big threat is because we test that much. we put out over 10k test a day, 80-90% are coming back negative, but by sheer numbers we're skyrocketing past everyone else.

testing is 100% the solution to this.

once everyone else catches up, certain republicans won't be able to deny the problem because their constituents will give a fuck. at that point government will take it more seriously. they'll only care when it's in their backyard and most of 'em haven't felt it yet. but they absolutely will if they keep this up.

Testing a ton leads to Germany and South Korea situations where you have a ton of cases and very low CFR. Because you are testing and catching the asymptomatic cases. Countries with high CFR are likely just testing those with severe symptoms. Italy for example. The one minister today estimated Italy's actual cases are likely almost 700k.

When you see countries with low CFR and wonder what their secret is, it is two fold.

1. Average age of infected.
2. Testing and catching asymptomatics.

Also, while we are here. The reason today for Spain's huge spike is likely due to this.

Testing would have been more important early to control spread. There is no controlling the spread now and we had to accept a state of being where you have to assume everyone is infected.

I assume the government and people in general will pay more attention once the number of deaths in New York per day start getting scary. And they are going to get scary. It will hit a nerve when we hit the point that you can say more people died of Coronavirus than died on 9/11.
