Just for reference, extrapolating from the past 2 weeks of data would suggest that we will have something like 40,000-50,000 deaths in 2 weeks from now. This could be less if our containment measures begin to show a positive impact, or more if that does not happen and our hospitals also reach a breaking point, but yeah.

Makes 125 deaths and 6,293 new cases on the day for NYS. Correction: Cuomo says 7,681 new cases in his press conference. So even more added than this tweet has. No idea if the deaths added also from 125. There are 728 total deaths now in the state. No idea what daily number got it to there.

I used the word immediate because obviously the virus will result in deaths much more quickly and it is much more measurable. There is an argument to be made about forcing more people in to poverty and then comparing poverty death rates to the average. The problem is that it is completely conjecture on our part. Say the death rate for those in poverty is twice that as the average. In 2017 8.5 of every thousand people in the US died. That means roughly 2,781,200 people died in the US in 2017. So if we use a giant number... like saying that this puts half of the american population in to poverty that means we could expect deaths to increase by 1,390,600. Which could certainly be WAY more than the virus would kill. BUT, the problem is I'm using made up numbers here. We have no idea how many people would be pushed in to poverty, and I didn't try to figure out how poverty affects the death rate compared to the average. I can't make these assumptions with any certainty so I have to go with what is certain, and that is the exponential growth of the virus. I'm sure there are researches and economists that are much smarter than me that would be able to compile far more accurate estimates than I can, and we haven't heard anything from them. So I must assume that economists think the devastation from the disease would affect the economy almost as severely if we let it run it's course.

The thing about problems like those is they do have solutions that could be put into place. It's a question of will they be put into place of course, but it's a lot better than the alternative in fighting a virus that has no vaccine or treatment.

Also I cant believe Trump got talked out of quarantining New York at the very least. I've been calling for locking the city down for weeks and yet somehow people thought it was a good idea to talk Trump out of stricter lockdowns of the city(What the fuck does a CDC travel advisory even accomplish at this point).

He told American citizens to not abide by quarantines and lockdowns. They are likely illegal, will be challenged in courts. They are acts of war declared.

i don't expect media will generally be against him though because 'omg trump bad' and 'omg cuomo for president' craze are both things, despite the fact that cuomo hasn't been that great. he's been fine but his response was also slow and his conferences go on forever when they really ought to be 20-30m. i'll stand by Ohio's governor as having a vastly better response but nobody talks there. what he did do right was speed and as i've warned before, that will hurt everyone else. we're getting everything first, sorry to everyone else, that's why he got the logistics done quicker than anyone else could've.

trump is 100% correct on this one. trump ain't asking for a lockdown even, all he's said he'd do is limit the borders, which is fine and should be well within his powers. just like Congress controls interstate commerce, state borders are an interstate issue. if he can get the bordering state's governors to agree with blocking off the tri-state area, that should suffice.

His quarantine was just to literally to enforce a border of New York where only truckers or essential employees could get by with health checks for 2 weeks so New York couldn't spread the virus across the nation.

America's death count seems to be doubling every two days, so at this rate if nothing changes, in one month (30 days) the death count should be at around 65,536,000 peaking at a rate of 32,768,000 deaths per day. I expect the curve to flatten by then since most of those that are still uninfected by then should be resistant to it, things should start to normalize by June or July.

...yeah no, that would be a horrifyingly bad idea and would result in a far worse situation.
a total lockdown has not been done anywhere and should not be done anywhere. the current rules are good, the lack of enforcement means people ain't listening. you can technically tighten them a bit by limiting the gathering numbers even more but that's not gonna make a difference. essential can be narrowed down too, sure, but what you're asking for here is another part that's a hell fucking no. your answers are pushing way too extreme and there is no "sake of people in NY" to it as everything you want would be significantly worse than anything coronavirus will do.
